*Remaster* - porting an old game to newer systems with enhanced graphics along with various better quality of life features *Reimagining* - new game from the ground up that retains and continues certain aspects from original but with vastly different graphics, gameplay, and heavily modified storyline *Remake* - new game done from scratch also but carries much of the original with it along with better graphics, gameplay, additional features and little change in it's storyline

Fucking this. I always use music as a comparison example: remasters exist in music and are re-masterings of the original recordings which lead to better sound quality. In video games, it leads to better visual fidelity, performance and so on, but the game is still the same one originally developed. A re-recording in music would compare to a remake in games: the artist/band got back in the studio and did a total rework of the original record. Regardless of how similar or different it is to the original, it's been redone from the ground up. Games are the same. Like, how is this so difficult to understand?

For me, born in 91, it's the usability that prevents me from playing rather than graphics. An example would be, say, Ragnarok Online. Love the artstyle of the sprites, and I've played various Ragnarok games over the years, but I just never could get into the original because of the god awful controls of it compared to mmos of today. You go back far enough and the controls of some games, pc in particular, becomes more and more obtuse.

Born 89 and I guess I sort of get the modern issue but then nah, not really. It's bizarre to me how popular indie throwbacks to NES era games have been or how often people play shit mobile games but then wouldn't want to try a vastly superior gaming experience just because it's "old". But then again I love my 90s games and have a nostalgic fondness toward the NES stuff that was my childhood but also outdated by the time I got ahold of it, but I still have trouble getting into 80s PC and Atari 2600 games or older. No nostalgia there, and it just crosses a threshold where I instantly tune out. Except Montezuma's Revenge haha, that one was brilliant. Kids with no nostalgia toward the early/mid-90s maybe hit that same barrier to entry seeing 2D sprites. They're wrong, but trying to be understanding here

*Port:* Making a game built for one system playable on another. This can also include allowing higher res, fps, and varied control inputs but the code and assets themselves are basically untouched. When done right the experiences between the ports shouldn't be essentially different from each other barring hardware limitations or included or removed content. *Remaster:* Maintaining the general base game but updating aspects of it for new hardware and new gaming sensibilities. This is taking the original code and assets and adding to or tweaking it for a similar but more "modern" experience. The goal usually is to still have the original game but with QOL features and other additions to make an older game a smoother experience with new hardware or gaming expectations. *Remake:* Recreating the game from mostly scratch. It is essentially a different game by usually a completely different team years after that is meant to mimic the original but with a new and often modern perspective. This can range, but you're essentially creating a new experience that is similar to the original but will be inherintly different than playing the original (hopefully an upgraded one). If you play them side by side, the original and remake should feel like the same game if made in a different gaming era. *Reimagining/Reboot:* Same as as a remake except it is not trying to be similar to the original. It is a new take on it and "inspired" by the original. But it is not the same game. It can be a different genre altogether even. Sometimes they really only share the same name. This is the most obvious difference as they are essentially completely different games; just sharing small similarities. Usually just meant to capitalize on a brand name but not trying to recreate an old experience. (I do want to add one more that wasn't mentioned) *Version:* Sometimes this is referred to as a port, but it's when a game is made for different hardware at about the same time but is very different on each device. They're not really ports bc they are different games with different codes and assets usually. Not as common now, but back when PC, Handhelds, and Home Consoles had vastly different hardware often studios would have different dev teams make an approximately similar game for each system. It's not a port bc they are not the same experience or a remake/reimagining as they were created at the same general time frame. More games with the same base idea but different presentations and mechanics due to hardware limitations, dev skill, or budget.

My most favorite example of a "remaster" is with "Command & Conquer Remastered Collection". Everything about the UI and presentation is improved, everything about the core game is retained. All the expansion content, even the console exclusive ones, included. And crapton of almost-lost, behind-the-scenes stuff. You can opt in to revert back to original musics and sounds, can even switch back and forth between new graphics or the original in-game. And best of all, they outright released the core game's source code, pretty much welcoming anyone to modify the game however they want. Before Dead Space, C&C-R already showed EA what happens when they just let passionate developers(they pretty much got the OG devs at the helm) have a go at a given project, with as little corporate meddling as possible.

These are my definitions: Remasters: Upscaled / improved port, based on the same engine. Example: The Last of Us Remastered on PS4. You can also think of it as a house that has been renovated but is essentially the same building. ---------------------- remake: The same game "built again", based on a new engine with no significant gameplay or narrative changes. Example: Shadow of the Colossus on PS4, or eg. the Crash Insane Trilogy. When comparing the house. A completely newly built house based on the exact blueprints of an existing building. ---------------------- Reimage: A freer remake that reinterprets an existing game. Partly significant changes in gameplay or story. Example: Resident Evil 2 (2018). building comparison. A newly built home based largely on an existing building without using the same plans. One or the other room is new or in a different location, the floor plans are not exactly the same. ---------------------- Reboot: The new beginning of a series, which sets the existing plot to zero and only takes up structures or elements of the original in a few basic principles. Example: The current Tomb Raider Trilogy. ---------------------- Then there are stealth sequels disguised as reimages (Final Fantasy VII "Remake") or mixtures of reboot and sequel / soft reboot (God of War 2018) or remake and reimages (Resident Evil Remake on the Gamecube). In these games, the already blurred boundaries are even more fluid and vague.

From insulting fans with genuine concerns to making comments about the series being quote "too Japanesey". Hell they kept switching from calling it a reboot to reimagining. When discussing whether something is a port, remaster, remake, or reimagining there are so many factors to it all that in order to remove the most confusion I think that most people should look at whether the game has one of two distinctions: 1) Is almost identical to the original experience. Examples of this can be remasters like Shin Megami Tensei 3 Remaster or the Demon's Souls Remake on PS5. Both of those games in terms of gameplay is practically identical to the original experience. 2) Is a new take using an existing base. Examples of this can be Resident Evil 2 Remake, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, or Silent Hill Shattered Memories. These are games that are effectively completely new games in terms of gameplay, progression, and even genre, but have a similar story and characters; although some changes in the story and characterization is also to be expected.

The problem with trying to delineate clear distinctions between Port, Remaster, Remake, Re-imagining, and Reboot is that however one tries to define them there's always gonna be that one title that straddles the line between two or more of those categories. My favorite example of a game that appears straight forward in the nature of its different versions at first glance but is quite complicated underneath is Sonic CD. All releases use the same assets but the older ones are ports (of ports in some cases) while the newer ones are running in an entirely new engine built from the ground up while sharing no code with the original Sega CD game. The one in Sonic Origins is technically a remaster of a port of a remake. They pretty much fly in the face of trying to differentiate ports, remasters, and remakes by graphic fidelity alone (something argued in this video) because they all look the same same in stills, instead focusing on improving things like framerate and aspect ratio.

It's a sliding scale and no matter how we categorize them, there will always be examples that neatly slot in between the two. These words are just very fuzzy, but generally speaking I lean towards your definitions with one additional category: the HD upres. This one barely even qualifies as a remaster, with all the same textures and models and everything else, but rendered at a higher resolution. The PS3 was home to a LOT of these and I have a hard time even calling those "remasters" when what they did can be accomplished in modern emulators with just a setting. I suppose that lowest level of "remaster" is better called a "port", since heck a lot of PC ports of console games back in the day were also upressed.
@SatansLeadGuitarist
Жыл бұрын
I've always seen it like this: Port: The same game released on a new platform with no real visual enhancements (aside from maybe a higher resolution as a result of the new platform) or remade assets. Remaster: The same game with visual enhancements or remade assets to bring it closer to modern standards but still running on the same engine as the original. Remake: A brand new game made from the ground up on a new engine that sticks close enough to the original to be basically the same gameplay and story experience but can include more modern mechanics and some new content. Reimagining: A brand new game that changes enough from the original that it's a completely new experience form the original (this one can be a bit harder to nail down). I personally wouldn't consider a PS1 to Dreamcast or Ps2 to PS3 port to be in different categories. If the step up in resolution on the new console is just a bi-product of the said console and they didn't actually add any new assets or visual effects then as far as im concerned its still just a port. Id also consider something like the Tombraider definitive edition or DMC definitive edition to be basically just a port of the already existing PC version of the game, as apposed to something like Metro Redux which actually did change some of the visuals from the base game.

The remake vs remaster debate boggles my mind. It's really simple: if they rebuilt the game from scratch, it's a remake. It doesn't matter if it follows the original game frame for frame. It's a remake. If they took the base game and built on top of it, it's a remaster. It doesn't matter if they added new textures, content or even full areas. It's a remaster. It's really simple.

I remember the controversy around TLOU Part 1 being a remake of a game that already got a remaster (plus that remake was missing it's multiplayer portion while also being sold for $70, $10 more than the original or remaster). There was also some twitter hubbub over a rumor that Horizon: Zero Dawn was getting a potential remaster with some people saying it was unnecessary and a cash-grab. Remasters: These are the most faithful adaptations on the list. A remaster may improve compatibility, audio or visual quality, UI/UX, and patch issues with the original, but it does not change gameplay fundamentals in any significant manner. Skyrim Special Edition and OpenMW for Morrowind are illustrative examples. Remakes: These are significantly different versions of older games that bear the same name and branding as the original, or something very similar. Story, characters, and premise of the original game are preserved recognisably, but may be somewhat altered. Oftentimes a game's mechanical genre will be changed, but we would still consider the work to be within the same literary genre. Good examples are DOOM (2016), Resident Evil 2 (2019) and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Reimaginings/Spiritual Successors: These are very different versions of a game, often picked up by a different team than the original. Changes are often very significant and may even include broad alterations of setting and lore. Something like Warhammer: Age of Sigmar or Xenonauts would be a mechanically faithful remaigining. Something like The Bureau: XCOM Declassified or Fallout 3 would be a reimagining with significantly different mechanics. Pillars of Eternity is a good example of a spiritual successor.

There's also a difference between sequels and remakes, which seem to be confusing a lot of people regarding DD2! Clue is in the name... Same mechanics apparently equals remake 🤷♂️

Remakes and reimaginings have become interchangeable to me, where one ends and where the other begins is a very blurry line imo so they can both be used as stand ins for each other. If Demon's Souls, a 1:1 recreation of the original with updated graphics is a remake, then FF7R and RE4R are reimaginings, but they can still be used interchangeably imo.

I always found it annoying how mad everyone got concerning SH:SM. They always painted it as a retelling or reimagining, and not as a remake. The intention was never to replace OG SH1.

I can somehow stomach the fact why companies put modern remakes for modern audiences but when Capcom treat the original games as an abandonware and forcefully putting the modern remakes on the forefront as a replacement that i have a problem with , and nobody should be ok with this not even if you are Capcom simp

If there is one misconception that so many get wrong including you is the "It's a reimagine not a remake". Okay. A reimagine is a type of remake. It takes the concept of remaking a game from the ground up, and really goes to town on reimagining it to do its own thing. I mean really takes the very bare minimum of the original game

Really good Jared. That's all interesting. I was more fascinated that you categorized Reboot and Reimagining in the same meaning. But then again, the more I thought about it, the more I began to see those are more similar than a remake and reimagining. One of my favorite series is the Tomb Raider games. The later installments in the series were still good. But quickly got trumped or overshadowed by Uncharted. When Square Enix brought out Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, they decided to reboot The Tomb Raider games with a much younger and inexperienced Lara Croft. I just love the cheeky charisma she had in the original game and she was different in the reboot. By the third and final Tomb Raider games, it was clear Square Enix ran out of ideas for Lara Croft. We didn't even get to see her dawn the duel pistols. Now Shadow of the Tomb Raider definitely wasn't the worst one. It still had some playability. It just wasn't shaking up the gameplay much anymore. I still think the Worst Tomb Raider game is hands down Angel of Darkness. But that said, I just think They need to either Retire Lara Croft, or continue the original Timeline. Anyways I still would classify Tomb Raider 2013 as a reboot and kinda a reimagining but not really if that makes any sense. Anyways this was a long time coming. I'm glad you did this video. Though part of me wished you put it out later with the announcement of MGS3 remake and the Master collection coming to PS5. But I recon this video was long in production. So I guess I don't blame you for putting it out when you did. But it's still a really good video. I enjoyed it. What's the next video you're working on?

Capcom itself stated that RE2 2019 is a reimagining, so you are not wrong. I think that when the sole reason to remake a game is to improve the graphics, it is the most shallow reason ever. The reason why RE 2002 is considered to be so great, among other reasons, was the fact that the team wanted to make a game they really wanted to make back in 1996, but could not due to technological limitations and budget constraints. That's why I will never, ever consider TLOU part 1 a remake. It is a remaster. Very expensive one, but it's the same game 100% with its mechanics, level design, etc. And asking 70 bucks for it is a rip-off. They did not have to work on anything besides the graphics. Why would they charge for it like it is a brand new game?

Personally, I've been pretty happy with the recent string of remakes like Dead Space and the RE games. I got into RE through RE4 so playing the older games in a similar format to RE4 was a big win for me even if I did enjoy trying out the originals. I would appreciate it though if they focused more on older franchises that haven't gotten a new game in a while. Three remakes/Reboots I would be really happy about are Chrono Cross, and Parasite Eve, and Megaman Legends. I love Chrono Cross and replayed it multiple times, but I am not blind to its flaws. I think a remake could really enhance the story, gameplay, and characters while serving as a potential revival of the Chrono series. I am not going to even bother suggesting they remake Chrono Trigger. Hardcore RE fans obsessed with the original games got nothing on Chrono Trigger fans who will start wars if anyone dares to suggest that Chrono Trigger isn't the greatest JRPG of all time and a remake would probably just piss them off. :) Parasite Eve would be great as I would love to have more modern-day hybrids of jrpg and survival-horror mechanics and it would probably be an easy way for Square Enix to test the waters as a lot of people want another Parasite Eve game already. I don't think it will ever happen though due to copyright issues from what I understand. But I can hope. As for Megaman Legends, they are my favorite Megaman games and still fun, but they definitely haven't aged the best. Some remakes to bring them up to modern day tech and then a sequel to finally conclude the story would be amazing.

Unfortunately you are correct on Parasite Eve. The writer got incensed over Parasite Eve 2 straying so far from what the source material was about, he refused to renew the license. Hence we got Third Birthday.

Wow, Dot Hack, Wild ARMs, you saying something nice about Nintendo and even having having confirm mapped to O in the Pixel Remaster footage. If I didn't know better, I'd say you made this video just for me (but you clearly made it for Michael) This is a fascinating topic, though. I always think ports and remasters are a wonderful thing, the more easily available a game is to more people, the better. I really love remakes and reimaginings as well, though in the future I hope more can do what the upcoming Atelier Marie remake is doing: flat out including a port of the original in the same package! This a wonderful bit of game preservation that only satisfies multiple audiences at once, but provides extra value as well. Hopefully, this can become a standard going forward

9:31 i think is just the way resolution works, in the game ir self changes nothing, 16:37 ,my perpective on this is that the emulation on this ports just free the games from the hardware limits, like is the same game but without any limitation.

I think the 1st three (maybe four or five) Resident Evils give a prime example of each word.... Let's start with RE 1... I believe this to be a true Remake as it was essentially the 1st game we knew and loved, but with an updated engine and improvements, and just enough changes to screw with those like you and me who knew the original title like the back of our hand. RE2 was a Reimagining as it took the vast majority of the original RE2 (exact layout, weapons, and most of the story) but gave it to you in a format that would fit the "modern age of video games" RE3 was a Reboot (whether that was the intent or not) because outside of keeping the same characters and overall narrative, they made significant changes to just about everything... (For ex. all of the RE2 REmake characters are pretty true to their original counterparts just a bit more extreme, but RE3's characters all have vastly different tones to them...) and let's not forget that they took out so much and couldn't even keep the decision gameplay that made the original RE3 unique. I'd consider RE4 to also be a Remake as it kept the same gameplay and feel of the original but just made enough changes to make sure that it wasn't the exact same game. Code Veronica HD is a Remaster, for the most part, as it's the exact same game, just with a lick of HD paint. RE0 falls somewhere between a Remake and Remaster... the game clearly got more than just a lick of HD paint like in Code Veronica, but might also be a Remake since it most likely added enough changes to make it not be the EXACT same game that would've been released on N64 (like the partner swapping mechanic) and then 7 (just because you mentioned it in the video), like you said, it's just another game, a new entry in the series.... maybe the best way to describe it is a "return to form."

You seem to use reimagining and reboot interchangeably but, I consider a reimagining to be what you said and a reboot to be any entry in a series that changes the direction of a franchise. A reboot can be a remake, sequel, reimagining or whatever. Other than that generally agree.
