Hi Dale! Long time listener, first time commenter here. Just had to join in with everyone else to say that your lessons have really helped me out a lot. When my cover band suggests a new song, I usually say, "As long as the ToneDr has a lesson out there, we can do it" :) Coincidentally you usually do....so I'm guessing similar ages and musical taste ...... and I really enjoy listening to LLB, the attention to detail you guys put in is impressive!

Great job as always, Dale. I appreciate your tutorials, as do thousands of other guitarists. I am fortunate to own thirteen electric guitars, so I am able to keep several in open tunings. This is a first keeping the high E string in E. Hope all is well with you and you're enjoying your summer. Best always, Bob from sunny (and crowded) Cape Cod.

Dale, After trying the "modified open G" tuning you suggested, I think Rich Robinson employed this tuning more than I realized. To me, I think it sounds good to use it on Jealous Again & Stare it Cold . Great Ear Sir!

Almost everything Rich did on the first two records was in open G, or open E. Capos play a lot in his playing

played in a crowes trib band and left the high E and low E alone so that way I could cover solos without issue. They almost never used the low E when doing open G songs. 95% of the songs they wrote were open G. Marc and Audley were std tuned.A few tunes need the high E tuned to D though.

Great lesson, but it would be very helpful if you could name the chords as well as saying 8th fret for future work. I work with the Nashville Number system and when I hear the chord name I then think in terms of the relationships and key. For me, it makes it much easier, especially if I want to move between the Open tuning and standard tuning. I studied music theory and that knowledge also is very helpful in remembering and mastering the song. I will practice by watching the video and just write out the chords and Roman numerals. That is how I master Purple Rain with multiple capo positions and different chords and open tuning and Don’t Dream It’s Over and Go Your Own Way. I have seen this song done in open tuning, open G, capoed and not. Thanks again for your great work. What are the settings on amp and guitar because you sound just like the record.

I learned this on a 5 string "Keef" guitar, where it is played without a capo due to the need to get that low G sharp / A flat chord. Here it looks like you are getting that A flat using the otherwise unused low "E" string, right? Certainly simplifies fill notes and such, but makes the strumming less forgiving.
