Fun fact: While Pixar successfully saved the movie from being deleted, what most people don't know was that this was for the original direct to video version of Toy Story 2. The original version had a smaller budget with a talking Bullseye, and Jesse as an evil talking cactus and many other differences. This was before John Lasseter got involved as he was still working on A Bug's Life. When he got to see the original footage, he was very upset and felt the story was too predictable and wasn't close to having funny humor and decided to get involved to save the movie. And so after 2 years of animation and almost deleting the entire thing, the footage ended up being deleted anyway in favor of the final film. Disney still wanted to keep the movie's release date of 1999 but Pixar rewrote the script on a weekend and had to re-animate the entire movie for 9 MONTHS! Unlike most Pixar movies which take 3 to 4 years to animate. And yet somehow, after rushing everything with the script and animation, it ended up becoming a sequel that's better than the original by many.

With how tech was back then, I doubt they were thinking of having multiple backups. If anything, this is what taught them to start having multiple backups. You’ll find a lot of companies in the computer entertainment business up until the early 2000s had very bad archival and backup procedures which has caused a lot of original files of digitally animated films, shows, video games, and other digital data to be lost forever.

This is exactly why when I worked at Industrial Light & Magic we pounded it into everyone's brain to save often and save iterations. You never know when something will go wrong and you end up losing an effects shot that it took you weeks or months to complete. We had some scary times during the rolling power blackouts from the California energy crisis of 2000 and 2001. Somehow some way somebody pulled some strings with Pacific Gas & Electric (it may have even been George himself for all I know) to get us a heads up when the rolling blackouts were about to happen. It was only a few minutes of lead time, but the warning would go out company wide over the PA system for everyone to quickly save what they were doing and to shut off our computers. I can also remember a nasty email virus that hit all the Unix, Linux, and PC workstations one year. Lots of systems were damaged and lots of files were lost. Only the few of us working on Macs (myself included) were unaffected. And going back even earlier to the late 1990s when I was at LucasArts, there were quite a few files & assets from the Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II game that accidentally got wiped from the servers. Fortunately, very much like what happened with Toy Story 2, I had been working on effects for the cutscenes from home because my wife had just given birth to our first child. I had back-ups of everything on Jaz drives (anybody remember that format?) and was able to restore it all to the company server. Excellent video! I really enjoyed this.

Never had a jazz drive but I remember them. I can still remember when IOMEGA zip disks were cheap enough I used them to install various applications onto like an extension of my system drive. So for example, my Corel Draw installation along with all my fonts and supplemental graphics programs resided on one zip disk, while a bigger games would be installed to their own disks. This was only feasible because I had the SCSI zip drive which was a lot faster than the parallel port zip drive. But it worked to save me a lot of space on my very expensive SCSI hard drive. My 80 meg SCSI Seagate drive (my first hard drive) was still in use 10 years later in one of my fathers PC XT clones.

Actually, the reason the backup drive thing wasn't working was because it was very flawed. It was cassette tapes and once they got full enough it sent a message to tell you to put in a new cassette, but the message took up such little space, you didn't see it and since it had zero space left in the cassette, it would delete start deleting the older stuff to make the new stuff, so when they would back it up, all they would have is the 10% not deleted.

Sort of. But a floppy disk only can carry less than 2mb (all those files should occupy lots of mbs, actually lots of gigabytes) and a tape can't store 3d models but plain footage and audio so also would be useless. The best option it's remove the hard drive with the backup and connect it to the main computer in order to copy the files directly and faster.

Oh god. Seriously, dude? "Nowadays things are in the cloud, but back then technical limitations meant they had to employ large Linux and Unix machines" - This is literally all "The cloud" is. The cloud is not some magic thing, it's just using someone else's server(s) instead of your own. "Linux and Unix are command line systems, so to remove files you have to type in commands" - Not any more so than any other OS, you can access them that way, and typically you do run servers in a headless configuration, but that's not the issue here. The issue by the sounds of it was someone was doing cleanup directly on the server with elevated privileges, and without a backup. That's three levels of stupid, any one of which should get your ass fired. The OS being used wasn't the issue, just that it was being used rather badly.

I'm way late on this, I just started watching Austin's videos, and I haven't gone through 10,000+ comments to see if it's been mentioned already, but rm'ing a file in linux doesn't remove the data in the file from the disk. It unlinks it and relinquishes the inode assigned to it. A company that can create the software necessary to create Toy Story 2 has the programming chops to read a disk byte-by-byte looking for tell-tale signs of specific formats they use and copying those strings of bytes into a file on another system. Once they have done this, then they have a lot of badly-named object files and scripts or whatever. They would have to go look at each one, figure out what it is (this is Woody's hat, etc) and name them appropriately. All they have to do is grab the hard disk(s) out of the server and make sure they don't write anything on them in the meantime since whatever they write might overwrite something that was removed by rm. They just had to stop panicking and think calmly, which is admittedly hard to do when you think you just lost millions worth of assets.

Fun fact: if you use any device that wasn't made by Apple or Microsoft it most likely runs Linux. Android phones, smart devices, iot. They all run Linux. Linux is open source ( free to use and you can modify and redistribute) and actually better put together then Windows and Macos. It's just less common on computers because there is not to much support for Linux on PC. But you can run Windows programs on linux, notably games. However it your not highly skilled will computers you should not use Linux on PC. While Linux does use Graphic user interfaces on PC using the command line is needed to do a lot of the really cool Linux stuff. So that is why most people probably should stick with Windows so they don't destroy there computers immediately.

Yep. That operating system shown early on in the video is SiliconGraphics' IRIX (or some other extremely similar UNIX form). Since Toy Story 2 development was from about 1997-1999, I'd say they used an SGI O2 to make most of the movie. They probably used things like CrayLink to share files and since SGI had great file sharing software, it all checks out. Also, while doing research, I compared other footage from that era and their renders to the animation in Toy Story 2 and yeah, they look the same, meaning both were probably made with O2 Graphics chipsets. Just thought I'd share this information for anyone's who is a huge computer geek like I am.

@ELAOIC kinda? Eh, I hate to simplify it like that. They're based on NeXTStep, which used a kernel meant to be a new BSD kernel called Mach, plus some code from regular BSD in it. Yes, over the years tools made for other BSDs have been ported for use in macOS and iOS (tools & code used by every OS including Windows). But it's not like it's *just* an Apple GUI on top of another BSD project's base. All the stuff on top of the kernel, the audio, graphics, etc stacks called something-kit are made by Apple based on NeXT code they got when they acquired them. Anyone doing objective-C macOS/iOS apps will notice all the NS-something classes abound, like NSString. That comes from NeXT Step.

There's a voice on my mind that wanted to just casually leave a dislike, and another that wanted to leave an angry comment. They're both in obligatory solitary confinement since last summer. Nobody liked them. Well, here goes my not-angry comment: No sane Linux desktop user ever deletes files recursively outside of a graphical interface anymore. I think the last developer that made the mistake of typing a directory with a space after the first slash and without quotation marks (which means to delete EVERYTHING ON THE PC) is still being memed to hell on GitHub, and their mistake could have been made on Windows and OSX, too, and just as easily. So if you think Linux is hard to use… well it depends. Do you want it to be? Because the difference in ease of use between _Linux Mint_ and _Arch Linux_ is devastatingly huge. If you don't believe me, listen: Linux Mint's installation goes like this: Boot from the CD, check if the system works (because you are first sent to a Linux Mint desktop so you can see if it works and if you like it), if it does open the installer from the desktop, click next, next, reboot, done. Most of the time you don't even need to install drivers. For Arch Linux: go read the wiki. Hours of it. If you're lucky, that is, and you need to have experience too, that's not optional. Prepare for loads of searching the web for answers too. PS: I use the latter myself. It has it's advantages. Namely, you potentially never again have to format your PC because you can just update, and all configuration issues or selection of software are your own fault, so fixing them is up to you (but is always possible and done to taste).

1:35 there's no such thing as "the cloud", what you mean to say is that they store it offsite on someone else' machine (with lots of redundancy and security features to prevent the loss of data of course)

The pure emotion in this story. You could make a movie about this adventure.

Here's what's fascinating about Toy Story 2: After doing some detective work, "Woody's Roundup" appears to have been inspired by two real western TV shows. Howdy Doody (a western cowboy puppet), and Roy Rogers. One of the cast members on the latter show looks almost EXACTLY like Prospector, and Rogers' wife Dale Evans may have also been a source of inspiration for Jessie (she was also a cowgirl and also assisted Roy often). The original Roy Rogers show ironically appears to have ended around 1957, the same year "Woody's Roundup" was supposedly canceled. It's VERY interesting! My Dad IIRC even said he has some memories of watching that show a bit when he was young.

"Okay boss, we have some good and bad news. Which do you want first?" -"Spit it out." "Okay! So the good news is that we managed to clear up some extra space on the hard-drive we can use." -"Right.. the bad?" "We had to delete 90% of the movie to do it. Anyways-"
