I always wondered what your sentimental attachments were to this game... I first came across it when a mate of mine who's parents owned a tiny shop, and were hardly scratching it through- came back from a bizarre trip from Japan and importing a Japanese megadrive! (I had just been bought my first system- a master system at the time and was jealous as hell even trying to argue 'no pause button' to be trumped by my buddy Gary hitting the start button...) he had Eswat, musha, twin cobra, woman's wrestling (I don't think that's its title but its bonkers and published by Asmik), strider and a couple of others I cant remember- sadly in his early teens he got hooked on heroin and I ended up with these Japanese copies for peanuts out of his desperation (I had no idea at the time) all i had to do was unscrew the case to play these on my European machine... so my attachment with this game and the others listed is Gary Wilcox who sadly died at 18 from a purposeful overdose via his dealer... what's tragic is there were 4 kids in that family. Gary, kerry, tessa and tryston. Kerry who was on her way to being a pop star sensation sadly got a random brain aneurysm and passed on years before Gary (who died in 2001 i think?) Leaving just tessa and tryston surviving.... that Japanese megadrive was the first in the country but as the years went on it was never looked after even needing to jam in a spoon on the powerswitch to get it to stay on.... its weird having these memories and attachments to such games. Thank you for sharing your story as I have mine...

I grew up with this title and really liked the setting, i played it so much that i ended up knowing every texture tile and corner, i always hoped for a sequel. This is why i was so surprised once saw the arcade version while being overseas, i couldn't believe how different it was (and that there was another version of the E-Swat franchise to begin with) as well as being very graphically impressive, like the deluxe Ferrari feeling arcades for this era always had (with giant sprites, numerous amounts of frames, tremendous intensity and action going on the screen).

Touching story, nice to have good memories from a tough time. I’ve played many good games over the years, but ESWAT is by far the game that I enjoyed the most, my favorite all-time game ever. I just loved this game, the only reason for my XB360 to still be connected to the TV (so I can play Sega Collection). The boss from the 3rd chapter (first mission with the armor) was the first time I cheesed a boss, just hover and using the R.L. will kill him easily.

my first contact with Eswat was with the Arcade version, and as it came with the emosion of defeating the arcade of Robocop, it became one of my favorite arcades. And I will not lie to you like the Shadow Dancer version I was a bit disappointed that it was not the arcade version and that the sprites were smaller. but just as Shadow began to find his exclusive aspects, only that in Shadow it was from the first episode with Eswat he went to the 3rd stage where he puts his armor. where the most complex bosses and mechanical monsters appear. I was also surprised that he had the plasmic cannon without the need of an item with three limited charges, here podias shoot only by holding the button and also surprised by his ability to fly. While advancing I realized two things that this was more like an Eswat part 2 since the armor was more advanced and the final bosses were more futuristic almost at the megaman level. If something that could criticize you is that if you were to change a linial style from left to right in the tour to one more labyrinths and platforms could be more ambitious in the design and would have made longer mazes because you felt that this game could be born a saga Metroi or megaman but exclusive Sega. I think that sega made arcade type which already dominated in 20 minutes.

Thank you for your story, so earnestly told. I just beat this game for the first time a few months ago, and the potential this franchise had is outstanding. This is sadly one of the many super innovative Genesis games that really could have used a sequel, for refinement and perfection. Like the camera being placed wayy to far ahead (frustrating), the 2nd stage shouldn't exist altogether it's utter tedium etc. But there's no other 2d game I've ever played that controls like E-swat, I love the free form jetpack controls, innovative and awesome. Like Ranger X, Jewel Master, Alisia Dragoon, really could have used a sequel to push their ideas and franchises to further greatness, similar to what Sonic 2, SOR2, Shinobi 3, Phantasy SIV did for their franchises.

@@mrlaidback83 No worries, I wasnt thinking of you as spoiled by your comment. Some people get too much and some too little. I just figured by your comment that your parents did things right. My dad was a tightwad and a trickster and took advantage of me mentally when I was a kid when it came to gift giving. I always looked forward to Christmas and bday because those were my only chances to really get anything. So when my bday came around I knew I had one shot to get something I wanted. So I asked for the Thundercats Thundertank. I was staring at it on the shelf and my dad in his sly manipulative way told me he would get me two figures if I didnt get the thundertank and made it out like that was a better alternative but left it up to me to "decide". So I walked out with two figures because that was the better thing to do and went home disappointed. So dad was happy cause he saved 15 bucks. Or all the times he would buy something for himself and then tell me that was my present. Such as getting himself a golf game when I got on the honor roll. Sorry had to vent.

If Sonic is the poster child game for the Sega Genesis, then this is it's long lost brother. It's easy enough to pick up and play, the gameplay is frantic but fair, the music is KILLER. It has one of the ONLY sewer levels that DOESN'T suck. There's clear progression from the basic mechanics and managing your limited health pool and single shot to the ESWAT suit and it's clearly superior mobility and durability. Even just the small bit of strategy when it comes to dying, making sure you aren't on a weapon you may need like the Plasma Cannon to avoid losing it....it's just a fantastic game, and easily top 10 if not top 5 on my Genesis list.

Personally, I find the level 3 boss easier with missiles/rockets because there's a safe zone where you can hover in which his attacks will never touch you and the rockets will fall directly on his head once he throws out his, um, face covering. Also, in level 6, you can kill the green lights by hovering at the top of the screen and using a full charged Plasma blast, the width of the shot will take out the lights without triggering the missile launchers, so I find that approach best. I did get to play this game, or even know about it, until I bought The Ultimate Genesis collection on PS3. I stuck with it because I looked at the trophy list and saw there was one for getting the suit (which is called the I.C.E. Combat suit in the game) and seeing as how I'm the world's (self proclaimed) biggest Metroid fan, the idea of a super powered battle suit intrigued me. The game went from, alright, to becoming one of my favorites on the collection. BTW, it looks to me like someone's playing on easy mode, given the amount of health you seem to have, though from what I can tell, the only difference between difficulty settings is the amount of health you get. You also seem to favor the super shot, while I tend to prefer the plasma Cannon. All in all, good video. Edit. Oh, one more thing. From what I can tell, this game is more or less a "sequel" to the arcade game, the robots you fight as the bosses of level 2 where near the end of the arcade game, which has a different sub title (Cyber Police: E-Swat).

The thing about the first two levels, is it makes you appreciate having the suit from level 3 onwards. It's a good example of "character development" through gameplay changes. The cop isn't much of a character, but you do feel that change in power, like when Mega Man gets stronger in Mega Man X. The game would actually be less good without the beginning levels.

I grew up hard as well my friend but my road was a bit different to haul. I was born with a medical disability and I have fought from nothing to get too where I am. From the tough streets of Tampa Bay and Miami, I learned that I would have to take care of myself. Through abusive step parents (both of them) to constant surgeries I have largely crawled out. My breakout game was my father bringing me a copy of Ghouls n' Ghosts to the hospital after I got through one of my many brain surgeries. The one thing I have always had going for me was that I look normal. You would not know unless I told you or if you are very astute and notice my neck. At any rate, thank you for sharing that with us. I wish you and your family the best. How is your E-Swat guy red? I have beaten this many times and I could swear that my character was always blue.

What ?? The second boss is the easiest. Just duck and shot only the guy who jumps around. The second fight with them, later on, is also as easy. You just need to hover in the air, in the middle of the screen. The boss will jump over you all the time not hitting you and the other one shots are passing you below your feet. i think the art in this game is outstanding for 1990. at this point a lot of games still had that 8bit aesthetics going on, even on the megadrive/genesis. pixel style still holds up, its colourful, yet moody, popping contrast between sprites and background, and really well used tiling, that just uses the right amount of repitition.

Awesome!! Although as a kid I too fell prey to the first couple of stages...and then stopped. I will NOW retry this classic!✌

E-SWAT is a definite classic. I was just thinking the other day about how weird it was that it never got a sequel, and usually gets left out of the conversation of great Sega properties. Totally relate to the feeling of growing up poor, too. I often wonder if my need to own everything as an adult comes from those days of never having anything.

My mom did the same for us, she hated the idea of living off the government forever. It is a help to get you out of poverty and that’s it. Thanks to all the moms that worked hard and showed us there's a better tomorrow when you work hard today. I was one that hated this game for not being like the arcade, borrowed it from a friend and boy was I wrong the game was great! To me it was more like E-Swat 2. I did miss not having the 2 player option.

Great review and interesting personal story. This game can only truly be appreciated by those who played it when it came out, I think. The nostalgia attached to this game is quite high for me too.

That feel when I spent several evenings in a row, grinding at this game, beating it by the skin of my teeth and here you just plow through it like it's nobody's business

One of Greatest Mega Drive jewels of that time and one of the first games that I played for the console. What a pity that Sega never made another E-SWAT game again.
