I used to see Norm McDonald at Hennessey's in Manhattan Beach on random mornings. My husband and I often ate breakfast there. He was always sitting out on the front patio where we normally sat. He was always alone and always reading the paper. Always kind to his servers; a true gentleman. I was already such a huge fan because Norm was different. I loved his voice, his cadence and his nonchalant approach to any subject. He made me laugh all the time, but the times that I'll remember most were those times when my life was not that great, and he still made me laugh. At my darkest, watching him and laughing, I had an "aha" moment where I realized that I could laugh (out loud) while going through the toughest times, I would be okay. That if I could laugh while everything around me was falling apart, I knew I would ultimately be okay. Thank you Norm McDonald for the gifts you gave that you were completely unaware of . . . When I googled Norm’s passing, and I saw an article that said: “Norm MacDonald Dead”, the first thing I thought about was how I think Norm would think that’s funny. The straightforward, no bull shit, shameless nature of it. And that’s what I admire about him most, honestly. Norm taught me that it’s okay to be shameless, funny even, for worse or better.
