I was stationed at Plattsburgh AFB from 1986 to 1989, 380th MMS, one of the best assignments of my Air Force career. Beautiful country, nice people, many things to do especially if you love the out of doors, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, etc., there was a marina right on base where you could rent boats and fishing gear, in the summer time the town would swell with tourist, mostly canadians, to enjoy lake champlian, just a great place to live and work. I miss the place and think of it often.

Stationed here 84-88 supporting the F-111 in AMS on the navigation side. Thanks for the tribute video, but as others it made me sad to see it abandoned. For those who have posted their time on the base - Thanks for your service. For those who served when I was there - it was my honor to serve with you. For those who served in SAC remember the SAC motto "Peace Is Our Profession" Our mission was to be so feared during the cold war that others would not attempt to engage. Mission achieved. With all the power at our human hands I am proud that we were ready yet practiced restraint in using it. I lift a glass to all the unsung hero's who served well, honorably, and with distinction. The world would look much different today if we had not don't our jobs with excellence. For those who serve today - remember your training and come home safe. Thanks again for the trip down memory lane in this video. Nice job Wayne

We were stationed there JULY 1976 - 1980. We were 18 years old and newly married. Being from Oklahoma, we found ourselves in a different world. We lived on South Catherine Street when we first arrived, then found a place out northwest of town on Military Turnpike, before finally achieving housing status. We lived on Minnesota Circle, had our first child while living there, then returned to Oklahoma when my tour was up. Good memories.

He returned to Guam unaccompanied until retirement summer 1982 (25+ years or service). I completed my first Bachelor's degree at SUNY-Plattsburgh and have the best memories of the beautiful Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks, and Montreal to the north. I too have checked out the house we occupied on Kansas Ave and am appalled at the disrepair of the facilities. Loved to watch the afterburners on the FB-111s. I was with Karen Sentipal Medley till she passed in 2008. I had a lot of good times at PAFB, met some really great people who taught me a lot! I miss those days even though when we were stationed there, it seemed like we would die there. I do miss it and think of it often. It was such a beautiful place in the country. WOW this vid got me all teary eyed. didn't see that commin. I was a Boomer with 380th AREFS.1982-1988. Worst part was roping the snow off the jets on Sac Alert at 0400. Dam that place was cold. But never forget watching the beautiful countryside change colors doing lazy touch-n-go's or Crash and Dashes if you had a newbie co-pilot lol. From Winter white to blazing oranges and reds in the Autumn. Amazing! Met a beautiful young town girl there who actually agreed to become my wife. Still married/ 4 children. Thanks to Plattsburgh AFB. But I gotta say special thanks to all the supply guys and gals, OMS, EMS, MMS and all the support units who really kept those jet in the air. Esp when we start poppin circuit breakers. was surprised to see how run down the place is, my old dorms and the weeds on the flight line, the commissary etc. Got a little choked up you know how the memories come rushing back like a wave. Sad, but nicely done film. I arrived at Plattsburgh in 1978 as a navigator (the first woman crew-dog there)...I loved the place and loved the people. I went to a tanker reunion maybe 6 years ago, and saw the alert facility in phases of being dismantled/changed, and couldn't believe that it made me weepy. BTW, at my local Goodwill today I found a print of a watercolor (by someone named Cristi?) it had Building 100 (Headquarters Group Building), the Gazebo, the old Chapel, all being overflown by a KC-135A and a couple of FB-111s with the mountains and Lake Champlain in the distance. I was thrown off by the fact that there was an apple with a white banner on top of it on the tails of the aircraft, but this little film clip confirmed that they were there at one time.

I honestly don’t miss the base 1971-73. I was temporarily assigned to the 380th CES barracks. Some guys in the barracks brought in stolen JP-5 with methyl ethyl keytone in their room at night. They were huffing it to get high. My roommate and I got sick from it. This went on for several months. The admin officer along with a Jr. officer raided the barracks one night and found the stolen JP-5 and the idiots were arrested. The 1st Sgt. at that time did nothing about it. I agree it is depressing to see the once proud Plattsburgh AFB in ruins. I had many happy memories there.

I was in the 380th SPS. I left January 1980, just before we won the gold in Ice Hockey. I left many friends there. Sadly the base closed on my 38th birthday. The pic of me here is fairly current.

Plattsburgh Air Force Base cost me a marriage, kids and the best years of my life, stuck with a psychopathic AMS Commander along with extreme cold, yet I came out with a 20 year retirement, and way ahead of my civilian contemporaries friends, and I make thousands of dollars per month in retirement clear. It was worth it. Yeah.

My family was the first family to move into dependent housing on Plattsburgh AFB in 1954. We lived there until 1958 at which time my dad retired. Thanks for the wonderful tribute.

My father was stationed there, until a move in '84 took us to California. I was 13 when we left. I don't remember how long we were at PAFB...I want to say maybe four years. I attended Monty Street School (now Momont Elementary); and I think Southside later, before going to Peru Middle School. I remember the Santa Claus on top of the plane at the base hospital every year, and some forest land that was behind the hospital at the back end of the base. I had a childhood friend that I lost due to a traffic accident while we were stationed there, so not all the memories are happy ones. The surrounding town has changed a little...much of it is still the same. I was in Albany '06 for a college undergraduate graduation...stopped by Plattsburgh at one point in my travels for a visit and spend time with friends and family who still live in the area. Old base buildings are still in use by civilian companies and workers, and new homes are being built under PARC (Plattsburgh Airbase Revelopment Corp.). I hear they even have a brand new commercial airport. But the memories live on for many us that knew it as home. The Skyway mall is still around, and if anyone remembers WIRY Radio (AM1340), its still pumping out the oldies tunes.

OMG! I listened to WIRY. I ended up in the 380th SPS, wanting to go i to LE, but ended up in security. UGH! At 2:00 am, in those freaking gate shacks, minus 20 F, I listened to WIRY. At Christmas, they played local groups and choirs.

Very nice video. I was stationed at Plattsburgh '92-'94. Good to see my old dorms, hangar, base housing and all the other buildings, including the old base side. Cold almost all year, but a great SAC base nonetheless.

Just came across this video. I was just a young kid when at PAFB(from 1975-1980), but I will always remember it because I was there when Star Wars came out(remember buying toys at King's(I think that was the name) and always remember the mountains of snow. An interesting time of my life that I'll always remember.

I think King's was at that shopping center just off base. I bought a snow scraper there, and used it often.

Star Wars was the first movie I went to see by myself. Rode my bike from old base, crossed the street and to the theater. Woolworth was in that same shopping center. Also a grocery store, don't recall the name but think it started with a G?

Would love to see some old photos of a B-52 tooling down the runway. Great little city / community. You can still listen to their neat little radio station, AM Stereo 1430, WIRY on the internet for a taste of the city from where you're stationed at now.

I was stationed here from mid 90 to 92. I was actually the driver for the Governor(Mario Cuomo)and base closure comity.I remember being on the phone(Payphone) with my Dad , he was watching on TV in Texas while they showed the view from the chopper up above..Really cool to be a small part of history. Even though I was a knucklehead back then.

So sad to see Plattsburgh AFB in such disrepair after her long, proud history. I was stationed at Griffiss AFB in the 1980's & used to go to Plattsburgh TDY quite often. Griffiss met a similar fate. Both BEAUTIFUL Upstate New York bases, both now closed. I am happy & proud to have been able to serve with the other SAC troops at these two bases during the Cold War.

This was a great tribute, you couldn't have picked a better song,it brought tears to my eyes when I watched it, I was only 19 when the base closed "long ago...but not so very long ago" I was born and raised here, and proud to call still call it home. "our town, love it anyway, come what may, it's our town" Anyone who has ever been stationed here in Plattsburgh, I hope you had fond memories of our little town :) and I hope this little town holds a special place in your hearts.....

380th FMS- Jet engine shop Dec 62- Jun 66. Worked Test cell and Flight line, B-47. I didn't think it got so cold, with the wind coming across the flight line. Brodies bar was just outside the Main Gate. Was nice to go to Lake Placid and ski. Had a nice bar there, the Golden Cork. Summers was beautiful, going down to the Adirondacks.

I served at Plattsburgh from 1975 till 1982 . worked in OMS from the transportation squadron towing all the aircraft . Was a long haul to take a bomber down to the 360 pad at night . Did a lot of them . You could hear the coy dogs howling in the woods on summer nights , it was cool . I spent a lot of time there and a lot of time out on the lake , hanging out on valcour island . I lived on Minnesota Circle . My building has been torn down , what a shame . Got married in Plattsburgh to a local girl ., and divorced 5 years later . Such is life ,, I think a piece of my heart is still there ,I think about them both quite often !
