I'd say Destroyah. It's production values were very good for a Japanese movie of the time and Destroyah with his devilish look is one of my favorite Godzilla foes. I would love if the Legendary Monsterverse uses that monster as I would love to see him redone today with modern Hollywood effects. Also loved how its plot tied back to the original and wrapped up all the previous movies storylines in such a satisfying way. Probably Toho's best Godzilla movie after the original

I've been a fan since I was a tyke and discovered Godzilla on channel WUTV Buffalo 29, which we got north of the border in Toronto. The channel on weekends right after Saturday and Sunday morning cartoons, at noon switch between Kung-Fu and action movies to the original series of Godzilla and other Kaiju films. I loved them all. I have a special love for what is critically considered one of the worst films of that time, Godzilla versus Megalon, with Jet Jaguar. That was my favorite film aside from the Raymond Burr version of the original movie. I knew they were guys in suits even though I was about 3 when I first saw them, but I was still awed by the backstory. Saturday Night at the Movies was a Canadian show hosted by Elwy Yost who gave the full background on the story of Godzilla and prefaced the version as the American one and not the original edit, which at that time wasn't available to western audiences. Thise were fond memories as I grew up and when Godzilla 1984 came out, which I believe is the beginning of the Heisei era, maybe, my interest was renewed. But the other releases didnt follow 1984 and I only saw images in magazines and the odd news clip, like when Godzilla was rumored to die in Vs Destroyah. It wouldn't be until much much later, like within the last 10 years where I've managed to watch the majority of films if not all of them. I've seen Shin Godzilla once and it's hard to find or even watch online. But I still Love the series. I even enjoyed the Zilla American version. Sure it wasn't Godzilla Godzilla but I was Entertained by it. I had a good time in the theater. I appreciated the lengths they went to hide the design literally until Opening Day..a feat that would be Very difficult to do today. The Child or Baby Yoda being the surprise kept tightly under wraps Succesfully until its actual debut, endearing the character through mere surprise alone. Besides my childhood Love of Vs Megalon which I still watch and enjoy is getting kinda it's own sequel in the upcoming Netflix Animated offering that stands apart from the Godzilla Earth series. And this one has a new version of Jet Jaguar in it so I'm Totally Stoked at 47 years old. I've favorite story bits, others less so. And I honestly really enjoy the new western Godzilla films with Vs King Kong soon to come out, King of the Monsters was fantastic. There's a proportionality to the new western films that carry forth from the Original Japanese film, the Force of Nature in Response to human activity aspect, has grown Respectfully from that original intended source. Where the Heisei series goes the route many a grounded anime does and gets very esoteric, spiritual, or even outlandish in the inclusion of alien invasion. Proportionate of course to aliens invading from the previous era, but with a more anime influence in their design. While the updated technology amd film effects improved the quality and capabilities of what could be made and filmed..there was an aspect more Power Rangers /Super Sentai Goofiness to it that ran counter to the realistic barrier for Suspension of DISBELIEF to allow movie Magic to work for Me. Shin Godzilla goes back to the original formula blending nuclear with the tsunami tragedy event so effectively that it's just as reverential as it's original predecessor had been in 1954. There's a bright future for Godzilla I think and I'm all for the ride.

I'm 21 and became a Godzilla fan about 12-ish years ago. I started by checking out some of the Tri-star 50th anniversary dvds from the library and started my own collection. I mostly started out with the Millenium and some Showa films. I didn't get too familiar with the Heisei films until I got older. I still stick with the Heisei films because of the animalistic qualities of Godzilla in those films, with that reason being why Junior is my favorite Toho kaiju character of all time. Another quality I like is the continuity and world-building with the world and Godzilla's nature.

Very good video. I can’t say whether I think it’s the best, but it’s certainly the most consistent and iconic era of Godzilla. You’re right in that they got his approach of villainous anti-hero down perfectly, as well as his personality, and the use of classic and introduction of new monsters is a near perfect balance. That said my issues start when the movies begin to be produced and released yearly, and the high water mark of SFX set by G84 and Vs Biollante trend down to more....I guess power rangers level, sparks flying and day-bright sets all over the place. Still I think it’s not just a great era but one of the most important for cementing Godzilla’s iconic status.

So I grew up on the original Showa Godzilla movies (I was born in 1985) and my dad and I used to rent the originals every now and then. When I was about 10-12 years old, my older brother found out they were showing the Heisei movies on HBO at 10:30 or midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. So he taped Godzilla 1985, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs Space Godzilla. I have to say that I loved every last one of them and wish they would release a full collection with the remastered English dub.

You said it beautifully with very good examples to back up your opinion. I grew up with the "Showa" era. I adore the Heisei series. I think each era offers something a little different. From the Showa era’s campiness to the Millennium era’s multiple original, unconnected takes on the character, there’s a lot to love and for different reasons. The Heisei era’s greatest strength, I feel, is the continuity between the films. The continuity is snug, but not so tight that each film can’t stand on its own. That’s a very delicate balance, and for the most part Heisei handles it quite well. At the most, a viewer might need a tiny recap of prior events. The character designs are also fantastic. With the exception of adult Mothra (too fuzzy/cuddly) everyone looks great. It’s a tough call personally between Heisei and Millenium Godzilla for my favorite design. The jury is still out, but Heisei could very well be my favorite series of Godzilla films. It’s between Heisei and Millennium for me.
@FlawedCoil82

Totally agree. I have not enjoyed any other Godzilla design as much as the last 6 films (despite subtle changes). He looked more animalistic and seemed to match the level of intimidation to the other monsters he was fighting. And after being so disappointed in him not using his ray enough in Showa film battles **looks at "Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster"**, it was extremely refreshing for me to see him finally using his most powerful weapon against his enemies. But my story was much like yours. I still remember the first time I saw a Trendmasters Spacegodzilla figure, I thought they were creating their own monsters rather than using Toho ones. It wasn't until I got the Godzilla Compendium book that I learned that they were legitimate Toho monsters.

I agree with your points the Heisei series will overall always be my favorite. I like that it's roots tie to the original Godzilla film from 54, and that it creates it's own monsters along with bringing back familiar ones. I like the general continuity between each movie, and that this series has a definitive ending. While Godzilla 84/85, Godzilla vs Biollante, and Godzilla vs Desotroyah are my favorites, the rest are fairly entertaining, expect for Godzilla vs Space Godzilla that's the skid mark on an overall good series.

I was born in the year 2000. I first discovered Godzilla at about age 6. The first movie I watched was GMK. But much of the first movies in the series I watched were from the Heisei era. And I agree that it is the all around best era. The best thing about it for me is it knew how long to stay around. The Showa series ran itself too thin and thus couldn’t maintain quality from entry to entry and the Millennium series could never get successful enough financially to get a through line going throughout. The Heisei series is contained and for the most part was able to stay consistent entry to entry.

Also, I feel the Heisei had the best designs for the monsters, except for Mechagodzilla where I feel Kiyru is the superior design followed by MG2; and Legendary Godzilla (love that hecka chonk) followed by Shin Godzilla (that creepy disgusting look really matches the whole radioactive monstrosity) and then Godzilla 2000.

I'm 54 so I grew up with the SHowa era Godzilla. But for a little kid, it was a great intro to this character. I'm glad my first Godzilla view wasn't something like Shin Godzilla. But the Hesei series was great too. I think it benefits from the showa era existing and they were able to take those stories and concepts and approach them from a new point of view. There are some things I like and some things I don't. I prefer Mechagodzilla as a villain. I was never a fan of the noble version used by man. But it was still a lot of fun. I don't remember it killing Godzilla so I guess I'll have to re watch them. Which is fine by me! I liked the new monsters as well. Like you said, it's all subjective so for me it's Showa forever! Okay, so what's with the sudden hate that the Heisei series has gotten in recent years? I totally agree with this video that it is the best era of Godzilla! All the movies are consistently good! I have my own personal rating system when it comes to Godzilla movies: Genuinely good (Gojira, Shin Gojira, etc) Good, for a Godzilla movie (Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 1974, Monster Zero, etc) bad movies (ones that are poorly made but still have high entertainment, like Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla vs Hedorah, etc) and bad, for a Godzilla movie (movies that have almost no entertainment value, like Godzilla's Revenge). In the Heisei series, all movies range from good for a godzilla movie, to genuinely good, all to varying degrees. Here's my rating for every Godzilla movie in the Heisei continuity: Gojira: Genuinely good Godzilla 1984: Genuinely good Godzilla vs Biollante: Genuinely good Godzilla vs King Ghidorah: Good, for a Godzilla movie (I would say it's genuinely good if the time travel was better fleshed out) Godzilla vs Mothra: Genuinely good (I like this movie a lot more than most people do) Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II: Genuinely good Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla: Good, for a Godzilla movie (definitely the worst in the series for many reasons, but still not bad) Godzilla vs Destoroyah: Genuinely good!

I'm kinda curious too, as this is also my favorite era of Godzilla, and in my opinion the best (I have yet to see The Return of Godzilla and vs Biollante of this writing however). Part of me thinks it was Blunova's video where he said it was bad (I haven't watched it, as I much prefer watching a video where someone explains in 20 minutes or less why it is that they love something rather than almost hour long video where someone bitches about something they don't like and why it is objectively bad) but that was almost last year, so I don't know. It's much better than the Showa era in my view, but that's a story for another day. Still, to me Heisei is what I think of when I think of Godzilla, and in some ways Japan too, considering how long Heisei Godzilla was used to represent Godzilla. And that's what I have to say about that.

I grew up with Showa films but found out about the Heisei series thanks also to the Trendmasters toyline. I found out about Biollante, Space Godzilla, Mecha King Ghidorah, and the man made Mechagodzilla thanks to those, which fed my curiosity on what films they were in and when I finally saw them, I was so stoked. I wholly agree that the Heisei version of Godzilla junior is a Big improvement over Miniya. The Space Godzilla one for instance is actually cute, and in Destroyah he actually shows some development into a fully fledged Godzilla.
@roybarrows9733

Points of correction: MechaGodzilla didn't kill Godzilla. He only paralyzed him. Godzilla absorbed Rodan's energy before MechaGodzilla could administer what might have been the death blow. Destroyah didn't kill Junior. He's still breathing and moving slightly when Godzilla breathes his energy into him. But I agree with your other reasons for favoring this series and would add this: it kept most of what was effective about the Showa series and improved or discarded what was ineffective about it.

I don't think I hate ANY of the Godzilla series or movies. My family had a large collection of the Godzilla movies and even one Gamera movie. And I think almost ten years ago my mom got a dvd box set of Gamera movies. I love each any every kaiju movie I've seen and while they might not stand up for today's special effects and CGI, they were amazing for their time and are still great to look back and think about how it was all done with people in costumes, puppets, and models. Everyone should see the Godzilla movies from the time when it was just a guy in a suit, even if it's just one movie.

I will say it... showa a fun introductory era... Millennium/finalwars epic and badass with flashy things... heisei... a awesome goji that faced badass foes that are epic

Hey man, nostalgia can be a bad thing you know. That could turn you into an idiotic film extremist, who worships as a religion (cough cough James Rolfe). Not saying this to tick you off, but just warning you

Oh, I am aware of the dangers of nostalgia, but it's impossible to ignore. It's all about balance.

How is James Rolfe like that?

@@42Caio Agreed. He isn't an extremist. I would mention Doug Walker, but I don't think he's an extremist as well.

Gotta go with The Showa era. Brings back the fondest memories for me and the old English dubs are classic.

While I like the Shōwa series for its historical value and enjoy the Millennium series a lot, the Heisei series is my favorite due to it being one continuous story and also it’s iconography. I also do enjoy the Reiwa and MonsterVerse series for what they are.

"Godzilla vs. Biollante" was the best of this series. Kwakita's effects were awesome. What followed next were some decent showings, but others that were quite lackluster.

To me, I don't care which series that Godzilla is in, I like him being as a King than a hero or a villian.

the heisei godzilla series is perfect, the effects are good, not like the millennium series, the camera they used is so much better then the showa and the heisei series is not so goofy

The Heisei era is the "Disney Renaissance" era of Godzilla, as his best films are from there. 14 years, 8 films (1 which was a slop, another 2 which weren't as good), yet this era defines the King how he was supposed to be: tough yet soft, apathetic yet in mourning, all alone yet being a family guy

The Vs movies were my favourites. Even my least favourite of them (vs SpaceGodzilla) was still really good. The other series low points are far lower than Heisei's low points and I feel liek outside the original, no other film reaches the highs that Heisei does.

its said heisei godzilla melted away in godzilla vs destroyah. but legondary godzilla luckily remained on the side of humans wich makes legondary godzilla stand out against the others, hes never backstabbed humanity and the damage he does is mostly unintended

The only thing that pains me about the Heisei series is how some of the best films are so hard to come by. Just so that I could watch Godzilla vs. Biollante I had to buy it on vhs a few months ago. I'll either buy Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah on vhs too or just watch it on you tube

Heisei has always been my favorite era. It has the perfect Godzilla in my opinion. Second place goes to Kiryu Goji. Last place goes to 1962 - 1975. Not to say that I don't like the goofy Showa era. It's just that it's not my favorite. Yes I consider 1954 and raids again a different era. They just have very very different feel.
