A short video from the shore line of Sandwick, near to where I grew up. This spot marks the point of the Iolaire disaster of January 1st, 1919. This January we will mark the 100th anniversary of this disaster. 201 men lost their lives yards from the shore, minutes from the harbor of Stornoway. These were men coming home on leave for New Year after the armistice of WW1. It is a tragedy that is keenly felt by islanders to this day and I am proud to be able to tell the stories of these men. There were heros on the night, people who probably never viewed themselves as heros but through their efforts a total of 79 men were saved.
