You should have shown how you pick up the thread with the threading tool. I was a machinist for 50 years and very few of the guys I worked with knew how to do it. Also, I always turn my threading tool upside down and chase the thread away from the shoulder. It eliminates the possibility of crashing the threading tool into the shoulder.

I checked a map and you’re not too far from my friend, Jim Borden. He built my last 1K yd BR rifle in .300 Borden Caribou. A very nice man. I was working overseas and when I got back to the states I visited his shop. I found out about him from articles in Precision Shooting magazine. After he completed my rifle with my NF scope included he shipped it to a friend’s gun shop near my hometown in Montana. I don’t compete anymore so I just shoot coyotes and prairie dogs with the rifle these days. Since I’m retired now I don’t leave Montana much except for an occasional trip to Wyoming or Colorado. Randy Selby, Wapiti, WY will most like build my next hunting rifle since he’s not too far away and I have friends in the area. If I were closer I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to have you build a hunting rifle for me. All the best.

Just some simple machining info for you. I have been a precision machinist for 30+ years and I'd like to make some suggestions that I believe would make your processes easier and more accurate. You may benefit from an indexable tool holder with inserts, this would provide several benefits. The first being if you chipped the insert tip accidentally you can quickly replace the insert without removing the holder thus maintaining the precision of your setup. Second inserts have several options for relief geometry allowing cleaner cuts without the need for grinding or sharpening an edge. The third is that modern lubris coatings on inserts aid in the ability to cut dry and greatly increase tool life using the heat caused by the friction of cutting the make the cutting edge more slippery. Nice fixture, it is a very accurate way of aligning the receiver face and thread pitch diameter to the center axis of the bolt bore and removes any variation in size related to diameter or taper in the bolt bore. Good procedure for truing the bolt lugs and bolt face. Just keep in mind that when fitting your barrel threads, the pitch diameter of the thread is what centers the barrel to the action so a snug hand fit is essential. I would recommend truing the OD of the receiver end of the barrel to the bore and then locating on that diameter to thread the barrel to fit the receiver and chamber the barrel in the same setup. Maybe you already do that!

Glad to see someone truing the threads properly instead of using a tap thinking it will straighten the threads out when a tap will actually just follow the original threads only cleaning them and fight against the tailstock. This is how's it's done right fellas. If your smith don't know how to do this find another smith or accept what you get in what you paid for.

You don't. He could hold the bolt in his action jig (with some mods) and have it hang out a bit and clock it up at the furthest apart sections he could get the dials onto. All the setup shown is indicating it the end of the bolt, subject to the same criticisms he made of the action setups by others, although his bolt jig should be close due to the "V-block" nature of it's support.

two questions: have you ever taken more that 2/1000 off and found when the bolt engages the cartridge it pushes it in to far ? what makes that threading bit move along , does the mill machine push it in or does the existing thread draw it in ?
@KevinCram79

I only do the action blueprinting to actions that will be having a new barrel installed by me. The action, bolt and recoil lug are all measured for proper tennon length, diameter and head space. I don't use taps that follow the existing thread. I'm single point re-cutting the thread for a 100% clean up. The gears on the lathe are set to the same threads per inch as the action ( 16 ) and the haf nut is engaged and the proper time to " chase " the existing threads.

After you true the threads to the face of the receiver, when you cut the threads for a replacement barrel, although you make up the difference for material removed from the threads, what is the approximate class of thread do you try to run? Also do you tend to run stainless a little loser than say a carbon barrel?

I never liked the Le bounty fixture for the bolt. you cant indicate it in like you did the receiver because the lathe jaws are not always perfectly square to centerline so it's possibly running like a "egg". now you have a perfect action but a questionable bolt. that fixture is fast and easy but not as close to perfect as you can get imho. I run a false firing pin body in my four jaw Chuck and center in firing pin hole very lightly then true up a glued 2 piece sleeve on the bolt body and run in a steady to square bolt face. its not perfect either but at least you can run a indicator on the bolt body and if its out alot u can do something different. I always wondered how parallel the v in that fixture was to the round stub. I used it a couple of times and when I set it up like I mentioned just to check out it was way out every time. just something to think about anyways. I don't like to trust other people's machining when working on my stuff anyways.

Mr Cram, thank you for the video, it was very informative. If you don't mind me asking, what brand and size of lathe are you using? I was considering a 12x36 Grizzly, but I'm not sold on whether the 12x is large or rigid enough for barreling and action blueprinting. Enco seems popular, but a bit more expensive. Rumor has it that most of these lathes come from the same factory in China, so I'm not sure there is any real difference between Enco, Grizzly, Jet, etc. Thanks.

@Mivec07
9 жыл бұрын
Nate Cram It will be as true as true can be for a factory production action (unless quality control missed it), it is a drop forged flat bottomed action that is heat treated prior to machining unlike the rem 700 action which is machined and then heat treated which can cause distortion. The Howa action is more rigid than the rem 700 and imo a better design, the main issue you may have with the Howa action is finding a gunsmith who can thread metric to allow the fitting of a new barrel. If your gunsmith cannot thread metric but instead recommends that the action threads be re-cut to imperial then walk away and find a new gunsmith who can thread metric

Even if you could slap the factory barrel back in there, that seems like building a badass race car engine and bolting it up to a stock transmission. Just like you'd want a racing transmission to get the most out of your racing engine, you're also going to want a precision tuned barrel to get the most out of your precision tuned action That breach face of the barrel has to be trued and squared up just like he did on the face of the receiver that way, you're not going to have a barrel pushed off at a funny angle. Same for the recoil lug too. A perfectly squared action and barrel will be useless if the recoil lug is not perfectly square flat round and true. 0.0001 (one ten-thousandth) out of round might not seem like a lot but let's do a little math: Action 0.0001 out of round Recoil lug 0.0001 out of round - On both faces Barrel 0.0001 out of round We're stacking tolerances for a completed rifle that would now be 0.0004 out of round at the breach end of the barrel. That tolerance is magnified out at the muzzle end of the rifle, and that will be further magnified out at distance. You might still get a one inch group at 100 yards but then you're getting a six inch group out at 500 yards >>>This is all assuming that I've understood the information in this video correctly. But that's my understanding of why you might have a discrepancy in your D.O.P.E. that you dial into your optic after a certain distance down range

Chinese lathes suck bro. I have one. Sure they will hold good enough tolerances to turn out accurate rifles, but tolerances aren't everything. A good quality lathe like a Kingston, Clausing, etc. will be much more rigid, more smooth, and run quieter than a cheap chinese hobby machine. This shows up in your surface finishes. If a Grizzly or Jet is all you can afford that's fine, you'll just have to deal with the frustrations of using crappy equipment. Cheap tooling is kinda the same story, yeah it'll get the job done but good quality stuff is so much easier and faster to work with.

Reminton 700s tend to be pretty fucking accurate and precise right from the factory and have always been known for that and apparently they ALL have to be "trued" to be "really" accurate and precise" OR they don't and getting that face "square" doesn't do JACK SHIT for "aligning" the BARREL IN THE RECEIVER WHERE ANY "RUNOUT" SURE AS HELL ISN'T CAPABLE OF "MISALIGNING" THE BARREL OR THERE WOULDN'T BE SO MANY GOOD-SHOOTING FACTORY ORIGINAL 700s guys want "built" into "precision rifles" in the first place. Not to mention "three rings of steel" obviously doesn't mean a damned thing to any of the "gunsmiths" and 'precision rifle builders" who start "improving" a Remington receiver by "truing" surfaces that are not doing jack shit but providing the "shoulder" for the barrel to bottom against. And when those "experts" start REMOVING THREAD MATERIAL FROM THE FACTORY FUCKING THREADS and call that an "improvement" WHEN THREAD DEPTH AND ENGAGEMENT IS THE REAL "ALIGNING MECHANISM" IN A 700, ITS NO WONDER SO MANY AFTERMARKET 700 "CLONE" AND "COPY" ACTIONS EXIST AND REMINGTON CHARGES $400 FOR A NEW "STRIPPED" 700 ACTION. SOMEBODY HAS TO HAVE REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR ALL THE 700s THOSE "EXPERTS" HAVE DESTROYED OVER THE THE YEARS AND DECADES.
@10-4CodyWade
Жыл бұрын
I've owned 2 Rem 700s and both shot like crap. My 338 wouldn't shoot under 2" so I sold it. The 270 WSM was able to shoot around 1.25" groups at 100 yards with handloads. After 15 or more trips to the range with all kinds of different hand loads (neck turned, weight sorted brass, all powder charges individually weighed, each round checked for concentricity using a dial indicator, tried various seating depths, numerous powders and bullets, and 3 brands of brass) I could not get that gun to shoot consistently under 1". It would also foul the barrel after 10-15 shots and accuracy would go out the window. So after all the headaches of trying to get my factory Remington to shoot accurately I decided to have a gunsmith true the action and install a match grade barrel. My gun now shoots regularly in the .2s and .3s. I mostly shoot groups at 200 yards where a typical group is around 5/8 to 3/4" for this rifle. The difference is night and day. I would not consider owning another factory Remington rifle other than maybe a Sendero or something out of their custom shop, since those rifles have nicer barrels and better quality control. I guess if you think 1.5 to 2" groups at 100 yards is "pretty accurate and precise" then you'll be happy with a factory Remington.

There are several ways of doing this, each has there pro's and con's, everybody says their way is the right way or the best, blah, blah, blah. Fact is, if you build or redo a rifle and hits target/tight groups, the customer is happy, the gun is safe, that is all that matters at the end of the day. But to leave out steps so someone tries copy what you have done here is in my opinion stupid and a reckless video. If you want to advertise your business then fine, call it an ad, but your putting out something that people may try/copy and who knows what they may screw up, luckily I know the steps you left out, not that they are all that important, but still, why put out a incomplete video or information type video? 99.9% of the folks that watch it are still not going to send you any work, if even .1% do I would be surprised.
@conexn
2 жыл бұрын
I wanted to add that unless your doing extreme long shots, and I mean extreme, redoing the threads is really not worth the trouble. Doing the threads only counts to maybe 10% of the accuracy. Threads will stretch, and what little that was removed will be taken up by the torque of the barrel, the receiver face is one of the biggest concerns, lugs, and the bolt face you left out. If your brass or case is not also straight or the bolt face not also done, it will cause the case to tilt to the bolt face and cause the bullet to enter the bore at an angle. But folks unless your going out past 1000 meters and for a complete blu-print I would not do it unless I am doing a competition and going out past 1500-2500 meters.
