A guy I used to work with around 35 years ago used to live in a cottage like this, on a narrow country lane in Cumbria. It was owned by an elderly lady who'd had it left to her around 50 years previously, and she only charged him about £30 a week rent. He fitted two wood burning stoves (long before they became trendy) and ran a central heating boiler from one of them. He and his wife raised 3 kids there. I remember calling round one stormy Winter's night to borrow some tools from him for a job I was doing. There was a one inch gap under the front door, and every gust of wind used to lift the edge the of doormat slightly. He had a length of railway sleeper pushed into one of the stoves, with the other end resting on a milking stool. As it burned down, he pushed it further in. There was no double glazing, and he often used to say he could tell what sort of a day it was before leaving his bed. In Winter, there was ice on the inside of the windows, and a thin film of condensation on the eiderdown........He lived there for around 40 years before the property was put up for sale. He now lives in a 2 bedroomed terraced house in a small village around 3 miles from the previous place. This one has central heating and double glazing....plus he has actually bought this one.

Ahh man, that's an amazing story! I wonder how he finds it compared to the cottage? Must be interesting still being able to see it and having so many memories attached. £30 a week also sounds pretty ace (ice inside not so much though 😅)

@@joshandsarahride When his previous rented place was put up for sale around 4 years ago, it was originally advertised for £250k plus, mainly because of the location. But there was no interest for Months. Eventually, the price was reduced several times, until it seemingly sold for £160k, as it needed considerable updating. The guy I know, who lived in it for decades, originally offered £180k, but they turned it down flat.....More fool them.... He likes his new place now, although it took him a few Months to adjust to living in the middle of a village. I think he's accepted that as he's now in his early 70's, it's preferable to have people around you......

It is nice to see autumn and winter represented positively as well. I feel like they get a bad rep. But Autumn - you feel the buzz of nature as it hurries to prepare for winter. Squirrels and birds, working overtime. You feel the energy of the earth go inward, as the trees draw their energy away from their leaves and into their roots - creating a beautiful floor of colours. Then Winter comes - the cold aches. Your breath becomes clouds. As you walk through the snow - you feel it, mostly everyone - is asleep. You feel the magic that is you being in a world where everyone else is close by but absent - the only feeling I can relate it to is when you're a child and wake up earlier than your parents and you take in the time to yourself. It's a homely feeling. You tread the snow carefully, wondering who you might come across and disturb. A drowsy mouse for example looks at you baffled, confused at why you're not nesting for warmth. The warmth of winter is unlike any other you see - hot soup, tea, baths, showers and the embrace of a loved one - it warms your soul inside. The cold makes you aware that there is a sun inside you, and you only need to be aware of it to never feel its absence again. Spring and Summer bring obvious abundance, but if you are able to tune into Autumn and Winter's special gifts - you will never feel out of place. You will be exactly where you're meant to be - content.

Beautiful. I lived in the forestry in Scotland. It was heaven. No TV just the radio. Water from a spring. An old sceptic tank. It was so quiet. When I went into town I found it so loud! We had cats turn up that we couldn’t handle but they stayed close and we fed them, put wormers in their food! We had a cat charity come out and trap them so they could be neutered. Although it frightened them they soon came round and forgave us! they would come inside but only if we left the door open all the while.

If one of you gets ill or breaks a leg, you’ll be glad of it. The main thing about rural living that many don’t understand is that you really need other people. You need neighbors who can help in a pinch and a community that will share all the local knowledge, and you need to do your share too. It’s very rewarding, and it’s the way humans are meant to live.

Just found your vlogs. I used to live in a very remote farmhouse. Now in a less remote house. Make sure you have plenty of food stored in glass jars. Store everything in glass. Keeps the mice out and the bugs. Keep boxes of candles, purchase solar lights, make firelighters using pine cones dipped twice in candle wax. I store mine in paper bags so I just put the paper bag into my woodburner with logs and set fire to the bag. Get your stores of logs ready in summer. Enjoy! There is nothing like living along with the seasons. I always made sure I had bales of hay for the animals in the depths of winter. 😊

@@bitonatorbitty2180 those girls were amazing. We had about a month where almost every day they'd be right out the front munching. Spent a lot of time just admiring from the gate 😊

My 30 yo gson and fam relocated to rural Bavaria. Awesome. He cycles a daily, 1 hour round trip to work except Sunday. When it's pitch dark, no moon, no stars, the remoteness seems creepy, he says it's liking cycling into the middle of a Stephen King movie. 😂 I'm sending him plenty thermal clothing and waterproof everything for Cmas. I hope he can buy an ebike one day or winter tyres for his bike. The goods the family forage from the woods is wonderful not to forget the artwork they've created with bits of fallen trees. Your beautiful video gave me a better idea of their life style there. They love it like you both do. Thank you. Long may you and your kittens thrive. 🎉

Great video nothing like living in an old stone built cottage away from it all. Loved my cottage even when I got snowed in for several days. Living a quiet simple life at your own pace is the best though it’s alway busy. Now in a big modern bungalow and even though it’s semi rural it’s not the same. Loving your wee feral pals are they going to go bikepacking lol. One of my cats Merlin a Siamese used to come with me he went climbing, did walk ins to routes(you should have seen the reactions of dogs we met). He was a dab hand on bikes even motor bikes 🐈

Ha, wow, Merlin sounds like he was made for outdoor trips! Would he just walk along side you? We'll be sad to say bye, but we're just domesticating them so they can be adopted, as we will leave next year. We have a friend that works with rescue cats who is going to be their new mumma 😊

@@joshandsarahride yes Merlin was something special he’d walk into a route and find a wee hidey hole to sit in or use the inside of a rucksack for shelter. I always recall climbing at Malham and him and our rescue Lurcher leading sortes to steal food out folks rucksacks 😀. It’s good you have someone to take the kittens when you start on your travels. I still have 12 cats along with 5 dogs, and 3 parrots.

@@SwampyDuckRidesAgain3636 wow, climbing at Malham! You must be a pretty big climber? We used to sit and watch the climbers there all the time. I didn't fancy the prospects of trying to warm up on a 7a 😅. That's a LOT of animals. Must be a real tribe and an exciting household! Do they all get on?

@@joshandsarahridemy partner at the time was a very good climber and as I used to second him and he was climbing crazy. That really pushed me and we trained a lot we had a rope lager hanging in the hall to go upstairs etc. I was very fit in those days. Never liked the gritstone in the peak and almost got stuck soloing as it feels so greasy. It was great fun ad we were climbing the same time as Fawcett, Moffat and Moon a real era. Yes it’s a bit of a household but it was busier as at one point o had 25 cats and 50 rabbits and 34 cavies on top but that’s all another story lol.

@@SwampyDuckRidesAgain3636 A very cool time to be climbing. I used to climb with a Spaniard in his late 60s who climbed a lot with Ben Moon, he had a lot of amazing stories! Wow, I can't even imagine it. Right now 2 kittens is seeming like a lot 😅

🇬🇧❤️ Stunning views, even when it's snowing, I've worked in a few of the Top hotels in the Lakes, a pub, & the a Housekeeper around the Lakes, & I loved everything about the jobs & the Lake District, I would stand at a lake edge in all seasons & wonder why people would won't to live somewhere else. Cumbria is Stunning & Beautiful 💕 & Wild. I appreciate it more now & realize how lucky I am to be a Cumbrian. Northerner. 😇🤭😉

I'm watching this on 25th October, I cut my garden back end of August ( I know that's early but I had a hip replacement so wanted to get things done ) two weeks ago I planted spring bulbs added compost and mulched cut the grass and cleaned up the gardens. Today, I'm looking at sweet peas blooming again, busy lizzy, fuchsia, dahlias ect, my garden thinks it's spring again. I have two dwarf cherry bushy tomato plants on my kitchen window that are still producing beautiful tomatoes 😊.

Sounds like you have very green fingers Elaine. Where abouts do you live? Unfortunately we had a very wet and cold summer so my tomatoes never took off, much to my disappoints as they're the gems of the garden in my eyes. Happy to hear yours atw still producing for you!

Nice video. In my early 20s I was able to break free of the big city and move to the country. Except for a brief foray back into the city to pick up some educates, I've been out for decades. If you're leaning in this direction, then like so many things in life, you can NEVER be fully ready. Sometimes you just have to take that leap of faith and do it anyway. Yes there's a lot to learn but people you meet will help you figure it out. Good luck. Ronn
