Really great video of the whole procedure. I started this hobby when I was 65...I'm 70 now, not so Geeky so to speak but I get by. So this will help me install my very first Mini PC...! I have a Losmandy G-11 with a gemini 2 GOTO system with three different rigs. I've been connecting my gear using 16 foot cables...Then into the house thru an access panel I installed. Thanks a bunch!

Very nice video. Your setup and mine are not that dissimilar. I'm using a Geekom mini PC that has military spec hardware that can handle the colder temps when necessary. It has built in Wifi 6 which connects with my indoor router just fine. And I tried Teamviewer but never liked the way it displayed on my office PC. I find windows remote pc works best for me. The hardest part is getting both computers set up to share files. As I have NINA save all my subframes directly to my office PC. I do all my astro photography directly from my office PC. The only down side is, when I need to polar align or collimate my OTA. As running back and forth from one end of the house to the other and down a flight of stairs just to get to my OTA is for the birds. So you definitely need the remote keyboard and monitor you can set up by your OTA. I keep my mini PC and my 100 AMP hour LiFePO4 battery inside a 2 x 2 foot battery box I built out of 1/2" plywood. I insulated it and put battery posts on the outside of the box and 10AMP cigarette lighter style cables to run to my OTA. I use the Pegasus Astro Ultimate Powerbox with a powered USB 3.0 to run a single 10ft USB cable to my mini PC inside the battery box. I wish I could find a wireless solution for the USB 3.0 hub. But other than needing to use a remote keyboard and screen from time to time at the mount to do our initial focus, collimation, and alignment, it works pretty well. I do like your setup. I just purchased a new Ford F150 Lightning and it takes care of all my power needs when I go to remote sites. I go up into Rocky Mountain National park for most of my remote work, and they have fast charger right in the park. But the park is only 34 miles away for me, and a fully charged battery will take care of 2-3 nights of astro photography and still have plenty of reserve to drive back home. :o)

Thanks for sharing. I use a laptop in my office so I can take it out to the scope when I need to collimate or PA so no running back and forth.

Very in-depth and practical assessment of the various options of connecting wirelessly, Chris. Thank you for going into such detail and keeping everything so clear!! This video got me thinking about remote access, so I invested in a Beelink mini pc, and GL-i SLATE router. Setup has gone exactly as you describe, with 1 exception. With the mini router in router mode, and the mini pc connected to the router's Wi-Fi network, there is no internet access, ...as expected. However, TeamLink won't start without internet access. TeamLink is installed on my laptop, and on the mini pc, which was all set up and done prior WITH internet access, of course. But when placed into router mode, and connected on the router's Wi-Fi network, TeamLink won't start without internet access. How do you manage to connect to your mini pc using Teamlink when in "router" mode with no internet? What am I missing? Connecting in Extender mode isn't a problem, since home Wi-Fi is naturally connected to the internet. So TeamLink starts fine and connects to the mini pc perfectly. Thanks again, Chris, for all you contribute to us!!

I'd just add for your viewers that when buying mini-PC's today such as from the Beelink range shown here, do yourselves a favour and get one with built-in WIFI - preferably WIFI 5 or 6 for greater range and throughput.

Can you provide more information on how you have your power set up with the battery? Also, Team viewer requires a subscription so that is a no go. You are a little light on explaining how to set up the router to talk to the minipc
@astronomytipsreviewswithcu740

The router is connected directly to the mini pc by ethernet so they talk naturally - nothing else to explain there. Team Viewer doesn't actually require a subscription. You can sign up for one as a non-commercial user for free but do not need it. I have been using it for 3 years with no problems along those lines. But there are other Apps that let you share between computers that you can try, I feed the battery power directly to my Pegasus Power Box Advanced which distributes it to the mini-pc and my other equipment. The router gets power from the mini pc via the USB cable that comes with the router. I made, but you can buy, a short cable with ring terminals on one end and Anderson power pole connectors on the other end which connects to a commercially available Anderson power pole to 5.5 x 2.5mm DC connector which goes into the Pegasus. I think that covers everything you mentioned.

Thanks for this video it is very helpful. Where do you place your extender when home? I. Have to set up in the front on my Side walk which is just too far for my Wi-Fi signal coming from the house. So I am getting drop offs when I try it. After I switched to the extender mode. I connecred the router to my home signal. When I go back to my laptop and reconnect to my home, I can not reconnect to my mele. If I connect my laptop to the routers WI fi I can connect to my mele quieter 3Q. When I use as router mode it is fine. If you are beyond the home WI fi range do you still keep the router at the scope? Do you put your laptop back on your home wy fi to run everything? Thanks.

At home the router is inside my backyard observatory which is about 30ft from my house. There I run the router in extender mode and am able to connect to my home WiFi. Then I can easily connect to the computer in the observatory through the router in extender mode. The router is connected to my mini-pc through a direct ethernet cable. I can connect with my laptop anywhere in the house where I have good home WiFi signal. The key is to have good home WiFi signal. I have several Google WiFi extenders throughout my house so that my wife and son can connect to the home WiFi from their upstairs offices. This gives good home WiFi signal out to the observatory.

Thanks for making this great video, Curtis … and for commenting on a topic I posted on Cloudy Nights. (BeltofOrion there)The GL-iNet 750s doesn’t seem to be available anymore. But I guess either of these would work, correct? Slate AX (GL-AXT 1800) Or Slate Plus (GL-A1300) By the way, I made this comment twice earlier … but it disappeared. Perhaps because of Amazon links. Now I just have the names.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Yes, I believe both of those will work just fine. In fact, I put a link to the second one down below the video. I always ask, if you can use one of my links to make your purchase it will help to support my channel. No problem if that doesn't work for you. In fact, if you use any of my links and then search around on the site (Amazon or one of the astronomy retailers) I will get credit for whatever you purchase. An easy and free way to support what I do. Good luck!

I just noticed, Curtis that your short cable link goes to a mini USB on Amazon, not USB - C. USB-C is what you need for the connection to the router. Also, my Slate 1800 just arrived and I notice the adapter that comes with it is 5volts at 4amps, for 20 watts. Don’t think that will run off the USB 2 on the mini computer like yours does. Not even sure it will run off the USB 3. But I’ll have to wait until I get the proper cable to check it.

Curtis, I’m wondering if I’m missing an intermediate step in your instructions there somewhere. I have no problem connecting to my mini-pc using Remote Desktop and my home network. But when I set up my travel router following the steps you indicate, I have no problem connecting to the router but I cannot connect to the mini-pc. Doesn’t matter if I use 2.4 G or 5 G. I’m sure it’s just some simple step I’m omitting, but the travel router can’t seem to find the mini-pc.
@astronomytipsreviewswithcu740

The travel router has to be connected to the mini-pc by the supplied Ethernet cable. You don't have to do anything else. Let us know if this works.

Finally figured out the problem, Curtis, and it’s working fine now. The problem was with the IP address. The icon on my desktop was set up for an IP address that was different from the one that the Client list was reporting for the router. In fact, for awhile I didn’t even know what that IP was for. Anyway, once I edited the original Remote Desktop icon and put in that IP address everything was perfect. So now I have two icons on the desktop of my laptop … an RDP and RDP_Remote. Now all I need are some non-cloudy nights. And I’ve got a better chance of winning the lottery than catching one of those.😀

Thank you for the great video. What makes the strongest signal between mini PC and laptop? Router speed in bps or multiple router antennas ?
@astronomytipsreviewswithcu740
2 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert in this area. But, we know that antennas make a great difference in signal strength. The original ASIAIRs had the antenna inside the metal box and people complained about signal strength and connection drops. Once they moved the antenna to external the range increased a lot I understand. The router frequency also plays a big role in signal strength and distance. 2.4GHz will travel further and through more obstacles than 5GHz.

@@astronomytipsreviewswithcu740 I tried a small travel router like the mango. 5G doesn't make it through a woonden house wall 40 ft away. The 2.4G was giving lags. That's disappointing. I ordered a 4 antenna router. I'll give it a try.

I have another KZitem video where I review the GLiNET Mango and the 750S Slate. I could get the Mango which doesn't have an antenna and only works at 2.4G to connect reliably at 60ft straight line to my observatory which has ~1" think plywood walls. Any further than that I get drop offs. From inside my house 50ft to the observatory I could sometimes get a steady connection but not always. With the 750S which has a dual antenna I could reliably connect from 100ft line of sight to the observatory at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. From inside my house at 50ft I could only get a reliable connection on 2.4GHz but not 5GHz. I cannot comment on other vendor's routers.

The router works fine, the monitor will not connect to my mele quieter 3q via the HDMI. It connects fine with my laptop as an extra screen. I tried changing the resolution but it did not help. @@philipnewman3916 Sounds like you did the right thing sending the monitor back. I am not clear on your problem. If you have a mini-pc at the mount it can run CPWI and SharpCap and connect, power and control the camera by a USB cable between the two. No need for any cable to the laptop if that is what you are using remotely to connect to the mini-pc. You will need a power source (battery or power station) at the mount which can power the mount, mini-pc and any other accessories.
