This was pretty cool, thanks! I would like to add a small money saver as well. If you wash the used up iron-oxide (that is saturated with phosphate) with 0.1M NaOH you can remove the phosphate and reuse the material. Don’t forget to wash away the NaOH before using it! :)

So is tumbling bad for gfo? I didn't understand that part..mine is at a slow roll kinda like water that's beginning to boil. Just like In the video. My local fish store said that's bad and I need to put that circle sponge the reactor came with and sandwich the gfo between the two sponges so the gfo doesn't move..is this true. ? Hopefully Ryan will reply

If you don't tumble GFO, it will eventually solidify. It sounds like you have it running correctly. Your fish store might have been thinking about carbon. You do not want carbon to tumble.

I watched your video on how to run GFO efficiently, but I have a few quedtions. What determined the rate at which GFO takes up phosphates, if I wanted to tune my GFO reactor to take out only 90% of the phosphates for example, how would I do that? Just running 90% of the recommended ammount? Or decreasing flow through the reactor? What determines how long the GFO lasts? Just flowrate? Thanks

I have sky high phosphates in my planted tank. Is there any reason why GFO would not work in freshwater, or be less effective than Phosguard?

@BRStv

Only in the sense that it will reduce the phosphates in the tank. If you go too far and bring the phosphates to zero, it could impact macro algae growth negatively.

just to a couple points to add to this great video... there is also the point where more GFO is not always better. you can wipe out your tank with true 0 phosphates. try to keep just a tiny bit. also keep your your 2 part dosing AWAY from your inlet to GFO - The GFO will absorb your alk if not fully dissolved. ;)

I am starting a brand new 10 galon and I heard all I needed was purigan. I almost got chemi blu elite and purigen. Since I already ave the purigan what should I put with it? especially since algae is supposed to be common in a new tank.
@BRStv

You could mix in a little GFO to help keep phosphates down, but other than that, there isn't much required for filtration media. In our aquariums, most of the filtration actually happens naturally on the rocks' surface.

I am going to be using a canister for the first while of my tank until swapping over to a Sump when I can in which I will swap the media over and add more. That being said where or what placement should I put the gfo bag in, in the canister.
@BRStv
4 жыл бұрын
Placement won't really matter. Ideally the media would be in a reactor so that it could tumble, so just keep an eye on the media for any potential clumping.

Keep in mind that GFO will solidify if it sits stagnant. While you could probably get it to work in a canister filter, it wouldn't by my first choice.

Jordan Sweeney Something like this, www.amazon.com/25-Foot-Python-Aquarium-Maintenance/dp/B000255NXC/ref=zg_bs_3048856011_2, I have one and it works great! Just hook to a washroom sink and turn on the water to start the siphon.

Is it safe to use GFO in a freshwater aquarium to remove phosphates?
@aquaholicmcgraw7769

BulkReefSupplyCom thank you for your time to reply! I have a planted freshwater aquarium. Never had problems with brown algae (diatoms) until we moved to a rural town in Texas, the tap water here is extremely high in phosphates. I was mixing 1 part RODI water to 1 part tap water, but wanted an easier solution than dragging 5 gallon buckets to town to fill with RODI water. Thank you again!.

Hey! so I'm having a phosphate problem with my just finished cycled tank.. I have a biocube 14g, and my cycle is over! my ammonia and nitrites are at 0 but Phosphate is at 0.50ppm... I don't know why!!! so ccant afford a reactor. can i get a small bag and put some gfo and drop it in my first chamber which has the highest flow.. and for how long should i leave it in there for??

So, no need to use the GFO in a bag method ??? There isn't really any gunk in my tank. All i see my rocks i being brownish looks like algae , thats about it.. my sand bed is pretty clean too.

Thanks..i am trying my hypothesis... i have a 210 tank with 60 gallon sump. 2 months old. i have 0 ammonia and 20 ppm of nitrates but my nitrites keep bouncing from .50 ppm to under .25 ppm. Its a fish only system and i started running a gfo reactor just to keep it clean. I noticed the nitrite spike around the same time i started the reactor. about 2 -3 weeks ago. I turned it off last night ...we shall see.... the entire thing is weird.

BulkReefSupplyCom Why don't you explain the risks of completely eliminating phosphates in your videos? My first year of reefing consisted of sickly looking corals that never grew because they had no food. Your calculator prescribes WAY TOO MUCH GFO. I now use BRS GFO to maintain my phosphate levels around .02-.04 ppm and have thriving corals. This is much much better than 0.0 ppm.
