I want to thank you so much for making this video. My wife (who is partially disabled) and I have been struggling to remove the front driver-side drive axle from our 2004 Grand Caravan for over a week, and today we bought the tools to make your make-shift vice-grip puller tool. She went out to use it (while I watch the kids in the house after throwing out my back this morning) and after only a few tries that sucker popped right out! I spent all day yesterday trying to remove a CV axle. I even hooked a chain to it and tried to pull it out with my suv. The axle come apart at the joint. This morning I went to Lowe's and bought everything. I even got a 1/2" x 6" pipe to give me a handle. I then went to Harbor Freight and bought a short 3lb sledge hammer and drilled out the handle. Total cost $35. Four whacks and it popped out. Thank you so much. To add I bought the new Irwin Vise Grips with the blue handle. 3x the gripping power. $14 (part of the $35). They require 7/16" rod, washers, nuts.

Wow this is great... It's so satisfying to invent your own tool. I have a piece of scrap wood with a long screw through it, and it holds back the belt tensioner on my John Deere lawn tractor's snowblower.. It is quick and simple and I can slip the belt on and off with zero drama as the belt hangs loose.. Similarly, I use vise grips to clamp onto the casing underneath the mower deck,. This allows me to take off the mower blades without the hub turning... I have also built a wooden dolly to introduce the snow blower to the tractor at the correct height.. I am 74 and a retired finance director and when it comes to money, I am as tight as a crab's bottom.... and that is water-tight.... Great job with the puller I will make one !

Nice improv tool. I've run across many stuck CVs. Never thought of this solution. What I have done, is first, I don't pull on the shaft. It just creates a mess. I take a chain and bolt. Chain around the back of the inside cup and put the bolt through the links, thread the nut on a bit... I then stretch the chain straight out, not catching on anything. I take a 10 lb. Sledge, run the chain around it just above the head. Put another bolt through that. Position myself like I'm putting, doink is mid-swing. Then swing it. It works every time, as long as I can get the chain back there. If I can't... I use a cable.

That's a great idea. Thank you for sharing it. Side note people... Make sure you can remove the whole cv axel from your vehicle. I couldn't get the right side axel to slide out from the hub on my Jaguar x type so I took it to a shop to have them do it. Told them to make sure they don't remove the axel from the transfer case due to the risk of damaging the internal seals. They ended doing it anyway because they couldn't get it out of the hub either. When they did, the c clip on the end of the axel ruined the 2 seals inside my transfer case. Now I have transmission fluid leaking into the transfer case and coming out the vent. The shop is now playing stupid saying they didn't remove it after telling me the day before that they had to. Even if they offered to fix it, I wouldn't let them do it anyway. They'd Probably try hot gluing it or something...
