Islam places a great importance on family ties bcoz a tight knit family provides protection against the evils of the world. What is family? A support system that builds you up not tears you down. If your family is not a support system but a toxic influence, you have to seek healing by following the guidance from the Quran which aligns with scientific mental health advice (lookup narcissistic family systems). When we've tried everything else, the last resort to heal ourselves is to remove ourselves from toxic family dynamics, according to mental health science. Bcoz it's only when you heal that you can go on to heal the dysfunctional family of transgenerational effects of traumatic family legacies. Make sense to make peace. Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others with theirs.

So refreshing to hear a Sheikh talk about this Topic. He is right, sadly too many people, particularly family members use Islam to harm you amd get away with it, when they don't even behave like Muslims in the first place. Islam doesn’t tell us to Accept Abuse in any form. You realise this when you study Quran and the Deen

And what if this toxic person is your wife (of 25 yrs) who now believes it is OK to insult, degrade, put-down the husband who is not the quarrelling kind and has (Alhumdolillah) strived to earn halaal throughout his lifetime, to the point the husband cannot do or say anything without an argument taking place. So he (the husband) remains silent or feels isolated ? A wife who is foremost in salaat, quran, and advises people on islamic matters and how a husband and wife should live etc and yet has her own husband at the bottom of the list when it comes to talking. And all this because I disagreed with her about the money being spent on house renovations (well beyond my capability), and how she swears at members of my family (including my mother) over matters 10, 20 years ago. Any other husband would be finished with her, but I've got kids to get married off. So, I can't get rid of this "toxic person". Nor get rid of her sister, who has contributed to my wifes foul mouth and behaviour.

I came back to narcissistic toxic family because of children. I am trying again. Most may not agree. But this time I am not silent about things. Going against my personality I am standing up for my self and kids. It's an everyday battle against lies deceit and manipulations. I pray to Allah SWT for guidance and strength. My children need few more years. May it be easy on us. I am no longer hidings things under the carpet. Extended family are involved wherever needed. This keeps some of toxicity at bay. But this is not a peaceful sustainable life. It's narcissistic MIL controlling her siblings who think everything is allowed if it's done for mothers happiness. And she derives sadistic pleasure manipulating siblings against us. You may say why not get out. Socieital pressures and culture one reason. Two decades of my earnings is with him. Of course he doesn't like parting with him. It's not a life but a truce for my children. In few years they will be able to take care of themselves. In sha Allah. May Allah SWT guide the abusers for they are more at loss and guide us too for we need it a lot. May I and my children see a day when we have peace happiness khair and afiyat. Ameen

She calls me for hours complaining about her pain never even asked how I am for the 2 hours. Later she drove 4 hours to have fun. She says Allah swt will forgive her if she wears revealing clothes. She leaves her litte girls for months with her husband n travels overseas. May Allah swt guide her. Some ppl like to have power n be above others and be better, it is better to be a little distance and pray . It is the best solution but I do not want to discuss here & I did. Shame on me!!
