I love that you are contributing and trying to help people and really appreciate the effort but man i am lost. So far of watching i see your steps are: 1) cut top out of bottle and add oil step 2) ? Step 3) let it run for 3 to 4 hours step 4) filter chunks out. What is step 2? What is the electric thing in the container? Where can you get the electric thing? Is the electric thing mains powered or 12/24 volt? If you could clue me(obviously not the smartest tool in the shed) in I’d really appreciate it.

That is a heating element out of a hot water heater. It's a 240v element but I am running it on 120v. The heat source isn't really the important thing so I didn't focus on it. You could put the old tank on a fire or even a turkey fryer burner.

Hey tim smith, I went off your set up and tweaked it just a little. I cut the top out of a tank, filled it 1/2 way with contaminated oil, put the oil on a deep fryer stand and put a vaccum line InThe top and as the water would boil out the vaccum would pull the water out. I didnt have time yet to run It but for a hour but I pulled 2 cups of water from the catch can in the vaccum line

Update: I brought the temp up to 175-190, it almost wanted to boil but I did t let it, kept it there for about 2 hrs. Water vapor came off in the catch but didnt clear up the oil at all.it still looks like a milkshake.

What equipment and how did you rig up a vacuum line?

A much slower process is to let the water sink to the bottom of the pail/tank and have the bucket, tank set with a drain valve on it. I waited for winter as i had a shit ton of tranny fluid to separate. When temps dropped below freezing the water freezes but the tranny, hydraulic fluid doesn't. All I did was pour the fluids into a clean pail and the water stayed behind frozen. If a person had Access to a large walk in freezer the process could be done quicker. Leaving the hydraulic fluid settle in a pail with a drain tap on the base also works.

That works too, but boiling it out is quick. The stuff I had was actually mixed well. It sat for a while and still didn't settle. Either way works. Thanks for the views and comments.

I actually was thinking the same the problem though is it seems to have emulsified and hasnt settled out one of the things i have seen cleaning out vegetable oil that has particles and is dirty fried bits and pieces in it and that was basically filtered clean by using some gelatine and water and shaking it up and leaving it overnite the next day the gelatine has set and removed any old particles in the oil and cleaned it up beautifuly just pour off the oil and take out the gelatine which you dispose of.The oil is ready either to be reused for cooking or you can add 10%kerosine to it and put it in your diesel vehicles to run them as its clean oil.So i was going to try cleaning some car oil and see if that same process would work it should in theory think the mix for the gelatine was 50 grams per litre of oil

My hydraulic reservoir is heavy duty steel. What if i put the heating element directly in the skidsteer hydraulic tank? Skip the step removing it. Heat it in place. Any issues you see with that?

I don't see a problem with that.

Do you think this would work with ATF fluid ? I have a bucket heater we use for race horses.

I'm sure it would, but I don't know that I would run it in a transmission. They are pretty sensitive to the quality of the fluid.

@@battleaxefabandmachine , it’s the fluid that Janie left uses in there equipment. I accidentally put over 3gls of water in the system 😤

You basically boil the water out of the oil. Get the temp above 212 and the water boils out

@@battleaxefabandmachine I could not tell if that was a thermometer or a coil from a hot water heater you were using to heat the oil. Thank you for your reply
