Excellent vid! Some of my favourite books came in poly bags. Ghost Rider being one of them and the Spider-Man 1s the other. I probably have a good 20 that I need to get courageous and address with a press. One day... one day... :)

Thanks for the feedback. I always get nervous about long videos, some people complain lol I just accept that these videos will get a lower viewcount. That's fine, though... views and money aren't the priority for me. I'd rather help 1.000 people with in depth content rather than thin "entertaining" content for 50,000. That's what unboxing videos are for 🙂

I've read from other CGC submitters who believe it's a thing that if you submit multiple copies of the same book back to back if the first one gets a 9.6 some deep psychology sets in that the rest of them might get the same grade even if some could be 9.8s. I've seen this happen to some extent with early submissions I've made. I usually will not put the same book back to back within a submission. I'll spread them out within the standard 25 block of books so each one gets a "clean" look. Sometimes I'll wait to send the same books in other submissions. I have about sixty beautiful copies of Lobo1 1990 minis that might take me eight 25 block submissions to do them all, lol.

You are right for sure, and I usually spread them out.. but of the purposes for this video, I batched them together. I like the idea of spreading them out in a 25 book submission.. never thought of that. I thought you had to put the book and then the number, never realized you could just input it multiple times intermittedly. Thanks!

Other than your video where you received purple labels, I have always thought you have had pretty good luck with your CGC grades. If only I could have you submit my books for me so that I stop getting a 9.6 with no grader's notes :-). A great video as always.

Jim, can you please share your press temp and time for treating the poly bag crease? KaptainMyke's books of course don't cover your technique. Thanks!
@ImproveCollectingComics
Жыл бұрын
I used the standard copper age temperature and time as per KM's first book. I will add that I now do an additional 2 hour "drying" press to help mitigate the waviness that sometimes shows up on the edges of books with moisture added. The drying press is 15 minutes at 130 degrees, leave in the press 2 hours and straight to the cold press for at least a week to re-evaluate. For books that I had to use more moisture than normal, I'll do two drying presses before moving to the cold press. I just added this technique in the past month and haven't done any submissions yet using this technique. Fingers crossed this solves the minor issue I sometimes get with waviness. I think it's because it takes a LOT longer for paper to dry then I realized. My guess is that heat multiple times and up to 3 weeks in a cold press is what it will take before the paper is completely dry. Keep in mind all this is a work in progress. I am constantly testing ways to improve things.

Realistically, poly crease should count as a manufacturing defect since they all have it from the factory.
@ImproveCollectingComics
Жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. While I could see CGC going that direction, if the book was removed from the bag not long after being purchased off the stand, it likely wouldn't have the crease. I think people keep these in the bag because they somehow think it holds its value or whatever. But it isn't the same as a toy. Of course, I do keep all the poly bags.. and include them with the slab if I sell it.

@@ImproveCollectingComics I pulled this issue, Ghost Rider #28, out of the bag literally the day it came out, it had the crease.

Does CGC give any consideration to poly bag crease when grading? Just as they might on a known common defect regarding a printers mark etc. Had to come back and edit and congratulate you on all of those much deserved 9.8's. I actually picked up that exact copy from my local comic shop out of a guy's mass collection of consignement books. I'd say it was definitely atleast a 9.6, possibly 9.8 copy. I don't remember exactly what I paid, but it was probably under $25.

They do, because it's not something done in production. If you remove the bag immediately after original purchase, the crease won't happen

Hello. I was wondering if you just throw away your empty CGC cases after they've been popped open? I am looking for some empty CGC Cases to protect and display some of my more valuable books. The DIY slabs available online are a bit pricey. If you just discard them, I was curious if I might be able to purchase some of your empty cases if any of them are in decent shape? you could even remove the CGC stickers to ensure that nothing fishy is going on.

They get cracked up pretty badly when I remove them, but I think they could work. I just toss them out, though. I'll try to see if I can keep them nice next time. Email me jim@improvecollecting.com and I'll notify you if I they look worth saving

I have a concern. I've been pressing for 6 years, but the last 3 books I've pressed have come out with ripples. ( 1 SA, 1 bronze and 1 modern book), I always use the same process ( I have a aluminum plate on the bottom): parchment paper, comic book with inside stack, parchment paper, backing board. Don't know what's going on. Any ideas?
@ImproveCollectingComics
Жыл бұрын
Usually it's due to too much presssure, too much moisture, or both. My guess is the moisture, assuming you either humidify or hotshot. I recently added in an extra stage to my process where I press once or twice extra for additional drying. I am finding that moisture can remain in the books for weeks and will slowly ripple to book over time if you don't dry it out sufficiently. And the cold press apparently won't work alone, I had books stay in a cold press for 2-3 weeks and still ripple after taken out
@ImproveCollectingComics

Oh, forgot to mention.. during the drying press I lower the temperature like 20 degrees, use very light pressure, and replace the bottom SRP paper with a single sheet of copy paper. I also replace all copy paper in in the book between presses
