For possibly the first time ever, here’s an extended look at the one and only Remus Gentles at the 1995 Touch World Cup in Hawaii, where his legend began...
In 1995, a Touch football legend was born as a young 16-year-old was debuting for the New Zealand Men’s Open at the Touch World Cup in Hawaii. Remus Gentles quickly turned heads at the tournament with his incredible sidestep and dynamic style of play helping the Kiwis to beat the Aussies in pool play AND the semi final - a very rare feat. Leading into the final, Australia created a basic ‘corner/save’ defensive tactic (which was widely incorporated thereafter) to shut down the mercurial Kiwi on their way to winning the gold. 16-year-old Remus however picked up the MVP award for the entire Men's Open grade and cemented himself as one of the greatest Touch players ever produced by New Zealand.
He gained legitimate icon status due to his outrageous side steps, and inspired a generation of young aspiring football players - including NRL superstar Benji Marshall - who all wanted to step like Remus.
