Breaking this down, and it applies to Hi Ren as well, but depending on the character he has different playing style. He's either soft or passionate. He dresses for the part. As Jenny he doesn't look at the camera, but Screech stares directly at it(you), just like the characters in Hi Ren. It all sets a great stage for an immersive theater in the round.

Ain't no one ready for this the first time even if they are already familiar with Ren. Timelines. Within the story Violet died giving birth in 2005. Screech, and thus Jenny, was 14. That would place their stories in 2019. Ren released Jenny's Tale in 2019. Then Screech's Tale about a year later. And Violet's Tale was released just last year. Not intentionally a trilogy at first, but now a seamless three chapter masterpiece. Blessings.

Ren's fans call this style of his music Bardcore & Here's my understanding of how the origin story of this trilogy came to be & the messages, that I believe Ren intended, are within. 🤩😁🤯 This wasn't originally a trilogy story. Ren read a small article about a 14 yr old boy killing a young prostitute with a knife in an attempted robbery. Knife crime had been skyrocketing in London at this time. Later that same evening the boy had been shot and killed by the armed police division that responded to a sighting of a possible suspect for a girl found murdered in Sussex Gardens area in Paddington - one of the capital's most notorious red light districts. It disturbed him, so he set out to write a commentary not just on senseless violence, but on how desensitized we've become to it. The words he ends both Jenny and Screech's Tales with is "It's such a Shame" we say these words all to often and just move on without a second thought. The the lead inspector was quoted saying " So Young, It's such a shame". Violets Tale was written over 2 years later adding another layer of commentary by Ren. He wanted us to consider not only generational violence but to make us look at all angles of society that we turn a blind eye to. Both characters are born out of violence on that cruel night of Violets beating and then both killed with brutal violence in the same night 14yrs later. Also, his lyrics have even more meaning when you read in between the lines. For example he doesn't say what Jenny was doing or why she wanted to escape from this place & life, or why Screech thought she was older saying at Patrick's door "I left this lady lying on the floor". Could that be because the way she's dressed & her heavy makeup? Also why was a 14yr old girl out so late in the dead of night walking alone in a sketchy area, wearing high heeled shoes, walking down a street that "she's walked it a thousand times before"? Everything points to Jenny being an underage prostitute, showing us what Ren writes has reason & is made to make us think. There's no fat on the bone, every word is weighed & has meaning. Interesting how Jenny has the same traits as her mother Violet, quiet, voiceless, and timid. Whereas Screech mirrors his father Stevie (the Prick boyfriend) in every way, Loud, obnoxious, and easily provoked to violence. They didn't know one another and had never met their biological parents. What made these kids so much like their parents? Was it simply Nature, inherited traits due to their genetic make-up OR Nurture, being brought up in the broken governmental system filled with, mistreated & in many cases, abused children, shuffled from one foster home to another ? He organically takes us on this journey, leaving us to think shouldn't we be doing better in this so called "advanced, wealthy, 1st world society. I'm loving your reactions. Cheers 🥂

Great write up. I stand to be corrected but I don't think the shooting part happened. I think it was just the murder that he read about. It really is his pièce de résistance. Gritty, real, hard hitting and tragic. I think you can tell from Violet's tale as it was made 2 years after the others that even as great as the first two were he had gone up another level with that one. The way they used the acoustics in the hallway and then again using the stairwell was just brilliant, timing it all to be in the right place at the right time of the song just shows the choreography that goes into his videos as well. Did you catch the sound of the seagulls when he was outside in Violet's Tale - the constant backdrop of English seaside towns and cities! I knew this one was going to be tough for you, the subject matter alone but I think particularly for women with what happens with Jenny and then abuse of Violet in the third. The way he jumps from narrator to character is just so good as well. It's like watching a one man show at the theatre.

When Ren wrote this he was inspired by a news paper article about a murder in Sussex gardens Paddington. Where a young sex worker was robbed and killed by a 14 year old who later the same night was shot by police. So Jenny was a sex worker. In the article little is actually written about “Jenny” and more about the “Screech” character, hence we don’t get much background in the song. Since these part were all written at different times I am not sure if they were meant to be twins from the start. But he wrote the tale of Violet to discuss generation trauma and violence. The fact is we leave Screech’s tale thinking we know Screech but Violets tale allows us to realize he is also a victim. A victim of violence and a victim of a failed system. Jenny is a victim of the same system. The reason Screech doesn’t get far is that he is 14 his world and support system and contacts are small and local. Violet lets us see the same spiral and same repeated failings - the staircase helps represent the continued spiral of violence and trauma. When Violet dies her trauma passes on. Many people point out that Jenny is like Violet - silent and still whilst Screech is like Stevie demonstrative, aggressive and violent. But is this nature or nurture. Many boys are taught not to express softer emotions and instead express only anger, aggression and violence whilst girls are taught to be quiet and be smaller than they are and hope it passes. Most likely Stevie was a product of a violent household too and these patterns keep repeating. Both Screech and Jenny lacked positive supportive role models to break the cycle. Truly sad tale

Ahhh hell woke up this morning to see you'd reacted to this Deana and like a bunch of us was thinking 'oh hell here we go'. Great reaction, the fact you held it together like you did was impressive given the content. The stories of Jenny, Screech & Violet were shocking by themselves, the twist in the tail with the connection between them made it all the more brutal to experience. Ren is without doubt a master storyteller. Now to try a little fun song to try and recover my friend. 🙂

Ren is the bard of our times. Bard in the fullest meaning of the word. Poet, musician and storyteller; all three written and performed flawlessly. The only other artist I can think who made such an impact was Bowie bringing Ziggy Stardust to the planet. Ren is a game changer. Like Bowie he can inhabit his characters - unlike Bowie he is explicit about his life, his experiences and his feelings. Very Welsh, that. His mastery of the various musical idioms he adopts reminds me of Bowie shifting from glam rock to soul in one leap with 'Young Americans'. Very few artists or bands have this astonishing flexibility. The Beatles and Queen are two, and the only comprable solo artist is Bowie. As a fellow chronic illness / chronic pain bod I feel that one of his greatest contributions is the most overlooked. Which is his talking about how accepting his painful snd (back then) god-awful situation helped him to transcend it, psychologically and emotionally. Of course, attention is always going to flow into his performances - but this message of acceptance from the depths of a personal hell few visit (let alone reside in) has the potential to change the world, because it has the potential to change the individual. Ren is not just a superb performer. He is truly an amazing human being for all that he has endured (and eventually used) for his art..

I agree with you. He is The Bard of our Times. The thing that so many people overlook ( people who comment he is too focused on dark subjects) is that even when he is detailing the lowest part of his life, it is interlaced with hope. The thing is, life brings dark seasons. He is an over comer and an inspiration for us all.

@@redheadedneighbor One can only agree. Curious that he's Welsh - the birthplace of the bardic tradition. His use of Welsh in 7 sins is, he says on BBC Wales, a very deliberate nod to the stories and musical culture of his nation.

@@redheadedneighbor Those in the know, here in Wales, are extraordinarily proud that Ren shares our nationality, language and culture. I am saddened that he couldn't find the opportunity to grow his talent and hone his craft here, and that is something to be looked at. Mind you, he comes from Anglesey and being an Island it's already somewhat insulated to begin with. It's also where the Druids made their last stand against the Roman legions which just adds to his mystique!

No novel this time. :-) I'll just say that your sincerity and empathy make listening to Ren even more enjoyable. The only reason I can even IMAGINE for your experience hearing Ren on another reactor's channel is that you had your "empathy switch" turned to 'super-low.' You have no reason to apologize or be saddened for not "getting Ren" the first time or two. It's obvious that since then you have 'seen his light.' I'm glad and sad at the same time that you had your heart ripped out. My vote is for the chocolate! ☺ (note... I am now going back to reactions you did before we "met" over your rection to Home Free with the Brits. I'll get caught up!)
