Renault has released the Austral Esprit Alpine, a hybrid SUV that bears the Alpine badge. The SUV is intended to provide a sporty look and feel without the full performance capabilities of a hot hatch. The top-of-the-range Iconic Esprit Alpine model is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor, and a 2kWh battery, offering a combined power output of 197bhp. The Austral is front-wheel drive only, with four-wheel steering available on the top model. The SUV boasts a smart interior, spacious seating, and a range of standard features including heated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree surround-view camera. However, the Austral falls short in terms of ride quality and handling, with a stiff suspension resulting in a harsh ride and poor body control. The SUV also lacks the standout qualities necessary to compete with its talented rivals in the crowded SUV market. The Austral E-Tech Full Hybrid Iconic Esprit Alpine is priced at £39,195 ($52,700).
