As a lanky ex-delivery driver of new Renaults imported at Southampton docks, with a chronic bad back, took one up to a dealer in Hull one morning in 1998 and stepped out pain-free and fresh. The least tiring car i'd ever driven until I got a BMW 640d gran coupe last year

I started in 1995 with a Blue 1989 Renault 25 GTX auto, which was a former ride than the Safrane, and a great family car, I moved on in 1999 to a Blue 1996 Safrane 2.2Vi Exec auto, which I loved, a big step-up in quality over the 25 too, drove all over Europe in great comfort and usually got 37mpg on a run. In 2014, I bought a Blue 2003 Vel Satis initial 3.5 V6, which is more of a Scenic taller drive, feels more 25 stiff, has the space of the Safrane, but at 245bhp has some decent but thirsty performance! I like the Renault Monaco (Westminster) Blue looks good on all their cars. The Safrane was delivered to dealers specially wrapped to protect the exterior, they were keen to keep the quality control really high, they described the cars a comfy sofa of a car, and that it is, London to Turin in a day was 800 miles in 15 hours with a fuel stop and was easy. Have a real soft spot for the Safrane, genuinely well built and comfortable but the bi-turbo would have been wild in the UK!

Ah you’re a big ‘big Renault’ fan then!! Interesting to hear what you say about the difference in quality and dealership protection from the 25 to the Safrane - Renault really did make some effort with the Safrane to bring its quality up!! I’ve looked at the Vel Satis in the past but just can’t get over it’s looks and mini-MPV feel. The Avantime is a whole different thing though!! I’d love to have the opportunity to do a continental cruise in the Safrane, it would simply eat the miles up no problem!!

Hi - glad to hear you are also a fan of the Safrane - they are such under-rated cars, and super rare these days.

@@collectingmodernclassiccar9771 absolutely, super comfortable and quiet. Have regularly used it for long journeys and makes a lovely long distance cruiser.

Too many people would be scared off using an older car as a daily driver, or for longer journeys but they shouldn’t. As you say a Safrane will give you a super comfortable cruise and get you where you want to go in quiet comfort. We mainly use our ‘Half Million Mile Volvo’ for long journeys (want to keep adding miles plus it uses LPG), and some people think that’s an odd thing to do. Plus it’s interesting seeing peoples faces when you’re in something like the Safrane - people just haven’t seen them about in so long.

Great cars had two of them both 2ltr. The most comfortable car I have had and lots of leg room in the back. I think they are very underated.

They are amazing really and so under-rated. I think it's become a matter of 'out of sight, out of mind'. Loving mine though :)
