The lack of sound is not an issue. My Clio driving mate has an iPhone app that uses the G-Force meter to produce almost any sound you like, from a V8 to who knows what. It even does gear changes etc. Using bluetooth, the sound comes out of his car speakers. It's amazingly cute to listen to.

I have an M-Sport BMW 335d coupe now, it's very nice, well-equipped comfortable and quick but I still miss my old RS Clio 182 that I had from new until I sold it at 120K miles 4 yrs later. It had that fun factor! Seriously considering swapping my BMW for the new RS Clio or Megane.

Chris excellent! Your questions are brilliant, I have a passion for cars, it's difficult to gauge how the future will be emotionally without the combustion engine. I wouldn't say electric vehicles lack fun at all, the twizy is great, direct steering, simple, light so many petrols just lack this basic fun factor. But you are right the noise, the smell, the vibrations and manual control of the engine; gearbox and skills required to control is not the same. I do love electric cars to drive though, the fluid, beautifully smooth delivery cannot be matched, nor can we ignore the damn torque, instantaneous acceleration of electric, in reality of 'normal' journeys quiet is just what most of us want! I guess we need to just face the future, in the meantime lets enjoy the petrol we have left. Keep up the good work, in the meantime test the Model-S as I'm bursting at the seams to drive one, and with your honesty and passion I'm waiting for your opinion.

Hey, well it looks an interesting way on comparing not only resource efficiency, but also can give you an idea on how polluant can each automotive method be, since only a little part of the electricity is obtained by recyclable energy sources. TBH when Chris was careening that little thing around the bends in the road, I was looking at it and thinking that it corners really, really well considering what it is. Indeed, that is true for consumer cars (I think GM had a project in the 60's with a hydrogen van that worked, but was scrapped). Regardless, the important thing is when it becomes widespread, not who spreads it. So I am eager to see, drive, and purchase one.

To add to m9078jk3's point, a lot of people forget that fact that Gasoline extraction, transportation, refinement, storage, and distribution process involves a combination of burning more fuels, and electricity (especially refinement). If all of that is added to the final CO2 emissions at the tailpipe on your car, it is a whole lot more than just that 19.4 lbs. And, like you pointed out, power plants can be cleaner, depending on location. So, overall, Electric vehicles do make more sense.

I've followed it for years and fully intend to own one. I cycle to work a lot and so a Twizy would be great for when I can't be bothered. I think the point is perhaps that it isn't a full blown solution to everyone's transport needs but, as a vehicle for commuting and local journeys it can only be a good thing.

There are limited areas where a vehicle like this makes sense... a true urban commuter for those who live close to work, for example. I live, for instance, 9 miles from work, but, I need a 65 mph minimum top speed. Close, but just not quite right. What I AM doing, is designing a single seat reverse trike, using a Honda Reflex 250cc scooter drivetrain, and a semi-enclosed cabin. with a 400 lb weight, I'll maintain a 75 mph top speed, get 65 mpg, and never have to charge it up.

You can calculate the figures using a 33.4 Kilowatt hours electrical equivalency (energy content) to 1 gallon of gasoline.Divide by the energy storage of the battery (6.1 Kilowatt-hours- Wikipedia Renault Twizy) and then multiply by the average range.(50 miles-source Renault Twizy). This will give you the MPGe.(the small e means equivalency).I perhaps should have used the homologated 62 mile range instead MPGe figure would be higher. Range varies depending upon terrain, road conditions etc.

Really car companies and enthusiasts have to be conservative with the motors they put in EVs cos the batteries while a lot better still have a way to go. It would actually be relatively easy to make an ev with 1600 horesepower and more than 3000 nm of torque the thing would just destroy it's batteries and run dead in a minute or two. Petrol and diesel has a much higher energy density than even the best batteries. Once batteries surpass that (if they ever do) Internal combustion is as good as gone. Still while yet though.

The ELF only has a 480 watt-hour battery. It claims a range of 30 miles. However from what I've also discovered is that this figure is derived from considering an average adult rider on a electric bike with half the range powered by human and half by electric power. So the true MPGe of the ELF under just electric propulsion alone is half that (under ideal conditions level terrain). With my traveled route-(somewhat hilly terrain) I would likely get a electric powered range of just 7.5 miles or so.

Myself I prefer a Organic Transit ELF human hybrid electric Velomobile as it is far more energy efficient (1,800 MPGe) than a Twizy though slower. Also it's much less expensive as well.Another advantage dual propulsion (human pedaled, electric motorized). If the battery gets low you can always pedal it.It even has solar charging on board too and can carry 350 pound of cargo in addition to the rider. The Twizy is pretty energy efficient though (somewhere around 275 MPGe or so).

I know that someone designed sound tracks based on great engines so that he could pretend he had 5 liter v12. but, what if someone engineered a sound track that was beautiful, muti layered with interactive tracks that corresponded with vehicle functions. Drivers could design their own sound tracks for speed, telemetry,g force etc...Every car would sound different in a way they never did before. The track could become like a symphony. No gas required

I say "Reh-Noh". Electric propulsion will be awesome, once we figure out how to power it. A hobby/pro RC car with a 14.8V Brushless motor sounds like it it bending space-time, running flat out. Sci-fi cars always sounded cool, like a jet on the tarmac or flying by. Like a tuned muffler, making a chintzy little engine sound like a beast, a tuned motor can needs to happen so the car sounds like a jet cruising by or bending space-time speeding/racing.

In addition to this, in terms of efficiency, any gas or diesel engine is much more efficient than the batteries. 12h of charge is a really long time, and spent money, for just 60 miles of driving in best of the cases. The reason of the comparison made with the Clio Sport made at the end is clear. You may probably have less maintanence costs, you will be paying not much more for your insurance, and you will have a proper road going car!

Sure, and that is why everyone used to have family cars, because Mum and Dad would be in the front and 2.4 children would be in the back. But these days, Mum has her own car, so does Dad, and any kids over 17 with a licence often have a car bought for them too. So for most of our lives we all have 5 seat cars which for 80% of the time, only have 1-2 people in it.

Problem with leccy cars is not how much energy you can store in the batteries but how long they take to recharge. Hydrogen works more like gas as when your car runs out of hydrogen you can quickly pull into a hydrogen station and fill it back up in minutes. So its more practical. Still we're much closer to an electric future than a hydrogen future but I don't think batteries is a solution unless they find a way to make batteries out of abundant and renewable materials...

There's something you all are missing. Electric cars can be all the green you want, but to what extent? Well, I well know many batteries suffer from decomposition in just a few years, which means being able to drive your Twizy in long term will require from some quite expensive maintanence costs, or of the renting of the battery as it is the case. You may likely not have to pay any CO2 emission taxes, but sure making those batteries is really polluant, such as the ones you have in a Toyota Prius
