Underrated place, Rennes. Probably my favourite French city north of the 45th parallel. Small (no more than a couple of streets, really), but lovely, half-timbered old quarter. Sure it’s not as instantly attractive as Rouen’s, perhaps, but what it lacks in substance it makes up in quality, and general vibe. I even like the monumental 18th century stuff, with all their straight lines and clean geometry. Best thing of all, though, was the laid-back, take it easy culture. This is one of the rare places in France, where you can publicly parade your fashion foibles and peccadilloes, and not be instantly judged by the sinister sartorial censor that exists quite strongly in France generally. Another thing: I counted at least 5 drunks (in the middle of the day! In France! In public!), and no one seemed to bat an eyelid. Public inebriation is unthinkable in some parts of France, such that I thought I had mistakenly landed in Scotland when I saw these soaks in the street!

U.S. cities are just not set up like these beautiful old cities. see the extreme in architecture. i would trade all of that Russian cold war building for the beautiful lines of the french. huge amts of beauty under 1 roof and 5 floors. dunbar, Normandy, Mansour roofs. ryan captured the essence of the city, even though it was a steady walk. i think I saw only 1 crane in both vids. the yellow guys, w/ that backdrop of cerulean sky and boisterous clouds looks so manet/monet and realist style.

That’s because the US as a country is only a few hundred years old. There are traces or human life in France from over a million years ago

Rennes and Vannes are both Worse and Uglier than Dinan and St Malo because St Malo and Dinan are excellent signal for British🇬🇧TV
