The whole system of helping people in America is flawed at its roots. I grew up in an abusive home: raped, beaten, starved and even had my life threatened at gun point, but no one took my cries for help seriously and the only thing that pulled me out of that environment was running away. I struggled living on my own. By age 22 I'd been homeless 3 times. Shortly after that I filed for bankruptcy because I owed more money in medical bills than I could ever make in a lifetime. I had a friend who gave me her car when her parents gifted her a brand new Mercedez for graduating college. I wasn't lucky enough to even have parents who cared enough about me to bother to see me in the hospital when I almost died, nor help me get a car. Because I owned a used Toyota my friend gave me, I was denied financial assistance like food stamps. I had become too sick to work, but I kept working because I couldn't afford to stop working for 6 months just so I could even apply for disability. My illness kept getting me fired because every time I got a new job, I could never last long enough to get past the first 2 months when I could be fired over anything. Even if I made it that long, I would still miss work because I needed repeated hospitalization. Even if I didn't get fired, I couldn't afford to miss days off work when I was only making $7 or $8 an hour. When you are born into a bad situation, not only does the government fail to help, even when they do, it's not enough. I went to school and worked 2 jobs. One of them was under the table, because if the government knew about it, I would have lost the grants I got for tuition. What kind of system punishes the poor if they take a 2nd job to try to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". The system doesn't help the poor get out of poverty, it helps keep them there. Throughout all this, I was suffering from PTSD from the years of abuse I lived through as a child. I would relive horrific events in my nightmares... going to school, working 2 jobs... and still being told I was lazy. I didn't do enough. On a good night, I would manage to get 3 hours of sleep. I struggled to get continued medical care. I had not one family member helping me. It's not that I wasn't trying. It was impossible to get out of poverty on my own. And this is happening all over the country to thousands of people. The system is flawed.

Otherwise they just dont understand, and they are on the other side with the ceo's taking billions from their front line workers. We need more business cooperatives because this top down system favors no one except those at the very top (some of whom frankly didn't even earn their way up, just a friend of a friend for some) at the expense of the fleet of workers below them. Our social welfare systems are the best parts.., the very core of national identities and functionality, they are what allow us to proceed far more as a whole nation rather than oust winning as a 1% such as the US can be/ is. I’m not so sure that given the amount of global resources that the US has and takes.., that the US is doing ok..? Appears the US belief system can look down on the weakest nations, that have nothing but conflict n poor political situations as trump did and say “see we’re doing way better”, yeah ignore that the US that used to be a global leader.. is now slowly falling behind us.., in infrastructure, thinking, social equity, equality & justice, basic levels of health & healthcare across its communities.. people in outback Aussie are great better outcomes & peace of mind than some in NY... Ya can tell this by the noise coming out of each nation... Mass public rape.., for example is not a thing in in NZ or Aussie, UK, US?.. but it can be in places like India etc etc. And when I hear that diabetics can have to go without food to get their meds in the US..., set against a normal western/ developed 1st world standard..., that that happens at all is a huge red flag.. in the “the most powerful, global leader nation” the US.. is very much F that’s is an issue...... un believable. “What’s going in there & why”.. oh yeah they still haven’t got to basic human rights of that stuff

@@tigertiger1699 Those countries are none of our buisness unless a threat. Don't forget "feelings don't make the world go round". It's our balance of capitalist and socialist programs combined with the ability to adapt to unique situations that make this country the greatest. Agree or disagree but it is almost a necessary split. Regardless of source may it be tax the rich, tax all, individual, corporate, or even private.... someone has to pay.

By the way👍😀 who the hell told/ convinced etc the “US” that it’s “the greatest”??, I mean in what way/s, the US as with any nation is a leader in some stuff👍👍, but😬 It might have been in many ways.. in 1901 when it sent it’s great white fleet are on an RnR invite..👍, with orders to look at taking NZ🇳🇿.., or at the end of ww2.. But in some some many ways it is not the most modern/ developed/ infrastructured/ healthy/ kind/ tolerant etc etc. ya gota love the US.. but we’ve been hearing Americans spout this for years and the examples they use are Columbia, Honduras etc🤔. Yet your ex Pats here and in Aussie etc that I’ve worked with over decades.., say that they’ve had to give up their “American religion”, calm down, relax and one thing that we commonly hear is that they get to realise that the rest of the fn planet is not out to get em... Anyway, your life your nation, ever thankful to the US for helping n saving in ww2 etc etc etc.. But we don’t want to live in such a negative social view point as appears to dominate the US.. Btw, there fn plenty of $ in the US to have everyone there looked after and save by the lack of negative health outcomes.., $700bill on military is a joke.. more than twice the rest of the 🌏 combined..., wtf is that telling ya.., the rest of the planet gets by ok without it... to me it shows a mind set more than a need

I loved the talk. Its always good to hear our politicians talk about the problems people are having, their struggles.. misfortunes.. Here is my... issue, with listening to conversation. For 50 years, that is all I've seen happen. Lots of conversation... but NO ACTIONS. These conversations are not new. its why we vote for people we thought would be better representation. (I love AOC btw) But it just never quite seems to actually happen. We have tons of money for weapon development and wars. We have tons of money for space. (that I, nor anyone else I know will never be a part of or experience.) We want to colonize Mars. For, how much? We have lots of extra money to bail out corporations, other governments, start up companies... We can even offer billions in pandemic relief to corporations, based in other countries, who dont even file taxes in the US, but show billion dollar profits from selling IN the US. But when it comes to getting an entire society, into a warm and safe home, with food?... Nada. Here is a few crumbs, hurry up and die bitch, you're taking up space money could be made from. I have spent my entire life working. You may be driving on a road I helped to build. Or maybe a bridge I turned a wrench on. I'm a straight up blue collar worker. I worked my ass off, (litterally.. I have no ass.. Ask anyone) But here today, as I type this, I stare into the unknown. A place I thought i would die in, was sold out from under me. Because I couldn't afford to buy it. (Social security doesn't quite afford me the luxury of home ownership. Not these days.) So here I sit. Watching time go by, Cant afford to go anyplace. I cant afford a car to get there anyway. Cant afford any kind of decent cable package, or any other kind of entertainment. Im just waiting until I eventually end up on the street. Which could be any time next month. Im not sure which is worse. Actually being on the street, or waiting to be delivered to it. That's the difference between "living" and simply existing. Being homeless for me, will be a death sentence. I have no delusions about my ability to survive the jungle. OR just flat out commit some crime so I can go to jail and take my chances there. I just havent decided how desperate I want to cling to a life that Im not sure is worth living any more. Not like this. Im tired of trying to survive. As in exhausted tired. How much can be taken from a man before he breaks? Lets sit and talk about it some more until we all decide how much better we all feel. The rest of us will either be looking for rope (if we can afford it) and a solid tree.. or going to jail while you "discuss" it. Again.

Her green new deal, is making us poor people suffer even more. Can you afford a new electric car? Or can you afford the higher gas prices and electric bill, when we could barely get by already. She’s only hurting us and only pretending to care to get more votes.

Many exhaust energy providing details of a crises to deaf ears. Feeling compelled to argue for human rights means that the deaf ears are the problem. The problem is that anyone can be voted into office. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez should figure out how to use her intelligence and humanity towards amending policy to implement basic requirements in running for office. These basic requirements shall come with strict and painful consequences, spelled out, for violators.

Not recognizing poverty because it is too painful or embarrassing is disgraceful!!! Homelessness is out of control!! People living below the poverty level even though working more than 40 hours a week is unconscionable!!! The wealthy pretend these problems dont exsist and just a blind eye 👁🗨 but those of us experiencing it have quite a different view of these things 😢 perhaps if these fat cats got out of their a/c office's, homes or cars and took a look around they'd understand but we know thats not going to happen. Why? Because they dont care about us or our country‼️ 😡🤑🤬🤮

No person working a full time job should ever live in poverty. There should be no such thing as a homeless teacher. Gentrification of poor neighborhoods needs to stop. You can loose your home if you make ¢.10 over the line but that ¢.10 won't get you ahead. The people are expected to work harder and step over the cracks in the system. Except now the cracks are the size of the grand canyon. To heck with minimum wage I want a living wage!

So, when are they going to change the poverty guidelines? Probably never because the reps in our government are more interested in lining their own pockets. I have some graduate/masters level studies in teaching. 3 kids, working 60- 70 hour work weeks as a public high school teacher I was making $4.00 per hour with my $23,000. per year salary, WELL below the poverty level.

I think if every citizen that can't find work that pays a living wage could claim a robotic machine that has taken away the millions of good paying jobs in this country and use the money they would have made if that machine hadn't taken away that job we might all be better off! Even then the Billionaires would still be soo rich!
@desmondbrown5508

It's quite pathetic that we cannot even get people to acknowledge real poverty in this nation. I'm talking poverty based in REAL wages adjusted by inflation and the cost of living amongst each state individually, not the subjective poverty based only in the average of all people's wages (HEAVILY skewed by rich people). Even with that last calculation you should never use average (mean) because it's warped when you have gigantic exceptions (outliers in statistics) such as billionaires. We should be using the median wage as that's more accurate to a baseline wage then, as I said before, adjust it for inflation and compare it against the real cost of living (which is also adjusted by inflation... you'll see that there are increases in cost there). I think we'd be amazed to find that at least half of the nation is in poverty after these calculations. And beyond that we need to also re-evaluate and change the way we calculate the unemployment numbers. They are heavily skewed and deliberately worded to leave out entire chunks of the population that need jobs. They don't include people who gave up for work, they don't include people that have inconsistent wages (if you made any wages that year you can be counted as a part time worker). Our system is collapsing at the seems, the infrastructure is falling out and the establishment is trying so hard to contain that reality by fudging numbers and lying about what we all frankly see on the streets every day.

I think you missed his point. He's saying that the attitude towards the poor in the US at the moment is the same as the attitude to the Irish by the English back then. It's about needing to change that long held view that there AREN'T structural inequalities that keep people in poverty, that it's exclusively that person's fault they are poor. It's the old "if we do not learn from the mistakes of history we are destined to repeat them".
