FYI it's a capacitive sensor, and yes, it works like a Vernier caliper. It's also on 24/7 unless you remove the battery. The digital out is standard and it just relays when the two Vernier lines intersect (two for each side, hence four pins). The problem you had was with the ZEBRA® (Elastomeric) connector

the ouput is BVD code reading only you need computer too interpret this after display in big digita; or comtrol system

How does a digital caliper work? Most will use a capacitive sensor to register the measurement, generally this is made up of a pattern of copper tracks on two PCB layers.
