The corrugated metal pipe culvert at Gillies Range Road, near Cairns, Australia was completed in June 2015 (two thousand fifteen).
The project site is in a remote mountainous area 1000 miles (or 1600 kilometers) north of Brisbane and the client required a fully structural, free standing pipe capable of resisting all traffic loads.
Slip-lining of the culvert with conventional pipes that are heavy and require major jacking equipment would have added significant cost to the project.
The culvert was about 80 feet (or 24 meter) long.
The deformed culvert had a diameter that ranged from 64 to 71 inches (or 1620 to 1800 millimeters).
Four StifPipe® sections having an outside diameter of 59 inches (or 1500 millimeters) and a thickness of 1 inch (or 25 mm) were constructed near the site and shipped via trucks to the job site.
Each of the 20 foot (or 6 meter) long pieces of StifPipe® weighed around 1000 pounds (or 460 kilo grams).
These sections were light enough that two workers could easily push them into position inside the culvert by hand.
The ends of the four segments were connected together after installation using the wet layup technique.
The annular space between the culvert and StifPipe® was filled with grout.
The completed installation is shown here.
The elimination of heavy equipment on such a remote site for pushing or pulling the pipe segments into position results in significant cost savings and improved safety for the workers.
