Thanks for this video Bryan! I was able to properly slot my Martin bridges. I worked my way up on 3 cheapo acoustics I bought used and then got to the good ones. Thanks for sharing so much info!

Theres a really good video of a luthier who routes out his saddle slot AFTER he glues the bridge- he has a jig and measurements to figure where to route the saddle slot precisely so thats its nearly perfectly intonated. Its a way cool video

kzitem.info/news/bejne/sHyhraiXbqpilIo The only reason you'd have this jig is if you were routing the slot while the bridge was on the guitar. kzitem.info/news/bejne/25qY4H2ss353rKA

What a wonderful teacher! How close to the saddle to you cut??
@Bryankimsey
6 ай бұрын
That's "ramping". For a "slot", I only cut until the string fits snugly. For "ramping", until I get about a 45 deg break angle. I rarely over-ramp.... that's only needed when you have a very low saddle.

Great video!!!!!!! @25:02 The sides of that D-35 look really polished. There seems to be a lot of nicotine yellowing on my 73 D-28. The binding is almost brown in places. Will Novus or Meguiars polish cut through it? I was also wondering why anytime I get so much as a bead of sweat on the finish, it turns white. Do all 70's Martins do that or is that the nicotine or some other kind of buildup on the finish?
@Bryankimsey
5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like nicotine staining. Don't think any polish will cut thru it. Remember "cut thru" means you're removing stuff and there's only so many times you can do that.

@@Bryankimsey Yeah, I've been a little worried about that. I've not been using a buffing wheel on it & for that very reason. I've only been hand polishing & it just doesn't seem to be getting through. It shines up nice, but still seems hazy in spots. I've been using a semi chrome polish on it & stopped because I was worried that it could possibly contain fillers in it. I don't want any more build up on the finish & the previous owner was known for using Pledge & other furniture polish on his guitars. Luckily, he didn't play this one much & I don't think it got the same treatment as often as the ones he played more. I'd like to get through all of that stuff & get down to the actual finish of the guitar. It would have to make it sound better to clean all that stuff off. Sometimes I sweat & it always turns the finish white on the shoulder where I rest my arm. Is this typical of a 70's finish or is it evidence of some kind of buildup over time?

Say Brian, quick question. I’m an amateur luthier, nothing toward your level but relatively comfortable performing most repairs and adjustments on my own stuff so your channel is a constant source of inspiration for me lol. I have a 2017 D28 that I absolutely love. One of the very last ones made with the standard x brace before the specs changed. My question is if you were the original owner with warranty still in force, would it be worth it to you to slot your own bridge and most likely void the warranty to gain the benefits of a properly slotted bridge?

Which bridge pins are better slotted or unslotted?
@Bryankimsey

The only time I would not slot is if the saddle was really close to the low E pin and slotting would create a very sharp break angle

How can I get my saddle slot deeper.?..It wasn't cut deep enough from the factory, and has under saddle pickup...The saddle has been shaved and neck relief is dead on...but still too high of action on backside. Thanks for advice (in advance) if any..Rock On Mr Luthier....Im hoping it's not costly,but still needs to be right.

You're probably not going to do it yourself, but here's how: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uo5r4GqtpGZ0bKw It seems you have two different issues here: a) too shallow of a slot, b) too high of an action. If you cut the slot deeper because it's too shallow, fine, that's one thing and a shallow slot IS an issue. But that's not how you should adjust the action. And your chances of cutting the slot deeper to lower the saddle the exact amount you want are slim. But... I'm kind of a stickler about "exact" and a lot of people aren't.

Hi Bryan, What does slotting the bridge and using solid pins add to the tone? I have a 1999 golden era d28 I had saddle and nut replaced with bone about a year ago

It makes a small difference in sound. Mostly for bridgeplate protection. Maybe I'll do an AB video with frequency spectrum

I have been looking at many videos about reaming bridge pins. As I have read when a guitar is built the pin holes start out at 3/16" straight holes. Then are reamed to either 3 degree or 5 degree taper and then you use a pin for either. I watched this video last night. My question is , say it's either a 3 or 5 degree but on either pin taper the 3/16" original hole is larger than the spot where the pin reaches the bridge plate. 3/16" is .187" . It depends at what the pin stops at the plate , bridge thickness, top and plate. After the 3/16" hole is drilled does the reamer basically just taper the upper 3rd of the pin hole? Or does it taper the entire pin hole? I ask because I have 3 degree pins and the guitar has 3 degree tapered holes and looking inside with a mirror I can see the bottom of the pin has no gap between the pin and the plate hole. And every guitar will be different. I do agree the pins should fit like you do it just a drop in fit not a snug fit.

Those are good questions. One thing you can't forget is that the hole exiting the bridgeplate has to be big enough to allow the string ball end to pass. I know that when I'm making a bridge and drilling new holes in a new plate that if I start with something small like 1/4" bit and then ream it all the way, the ball end usually won't pass. I have to run a bigger drill bit- and I'll have to check the size- to get the ball end in. As you correctly state- the diameter of the actual hole at the plate depends on the bridge, top, and plate thickness. Even if only the top X amount is reamed, as long as the pin is snug, you're fine. Because, remember, with a slotted bridge, it's the SLOT that's carrying the load of the string, not the pressure of the ball against the pin as in a non-slotted bridge. Therefore a tiny bit of air around the pin at the plate is not going to cause problems as long as the majority of the pin fits snug. I think 3 deg taper is the better design because it allows for this slightly larger inside hole, but nearly all pins are 5 deg taper, so you kind of have to work with what you have.

@@Bryankimsey What I'm trying to do is the guitar I have new had cheap very tight fitting 3 degree taper pins. I got new pins 3 degree from Graph Tech . They offer two sizes both 3 degree the only difference it their traditional pins are longer and have a .208" under skirt the Presentation have a .194" under skirt and also have a .031" C shaped slot the other has a square cornered .062" deep slot. Don't have a reamer , my options are either cut slots in the pin hole just to allow for the strings wrap which low E is .068" or deepen the pins slot which in my mind is a more difficult solution and also allows more room for the ball to creep into the plate. I was going to post this but it was to long I felt.

Ebony and Galalith from stewmac.com. Antique Acoustics by the gross direct from Willi who makes them- you can get them from Elderly or Google away. Bone and water buffalo horn from Bob Colosi.

I forgot one thing the 3 degree GraphTech traditional pins are to large under the skirt to fit with out reaming the holes the other set Presentation will fit without reaming they are near .004" smaller than the stock plastic pins.

It's just tough working w/out the right tools. One option you might consider is shaving the bigger pins down to fit. Use a utility razor and scrape the shaft down until it fits.
@williamjahn7514

I removed 2 of the pins and looked at the pin holes. They have a taper but it's not clean , there is a bit of a slight spiral groove on the walls. I tried both Graph Tech pins and the smaller diameter below the skirt on the low E without the string is a bit looser than i care for. I mean you can rock it with the skirt seated. On the high E I could leave the string in and the pin fits well. I just decided to get a 3 degree reamer and use the other pins to clean up the pin holes and fit the larger pins. The only way the smaller pins would fit the pins holes with the strings in would be to slot the holes just enough to allow the string wraps room so each slot would be a different size. That would work well enough.

I've talked to 2 local luthiers about slotting the bridge of my HD-28 and they each didn't think it was worth doing. Do you feel like this is a "necessary" mod to an otherwise good guitar?
@Bryankimsey

I don't think a guitar has ever left the shop without getting slotted. I think people who don't do it don't understand that there's nothing to lose and quite a few things to gain. I also wouldn't ask someone who doesn't want to do it to do it.
