Thanks for the video. I just got one, came with 64GB, a 12 core cpu, and a700 gpus. It has a 1 TB WD green drive in it that had Monteray installed. I put a drive in it that had Windows 11 that I took out of another computer and it booted right up and loaded all the proper dirvers as soon as it updated. I notice occassional graphics studder when playing games and it makes me wonder if it's getting hot somewhere but I took the top fan off and it all looks very clean inside, but maybe it needs new paste or something. I want to watch a few more videos before I try to repaste it. Your video is the best one I've seen so far.

Dude, for cleaning the chips, use the firm paintbrush, it won't damage the components, but it will remove the old thermal paste so quick and easy you won't even blink. As for everything else, use the soft paint brush. Simple

The boot rom in high Sierra did not allow for updates with third party SSDs installed, you needed to replace the original Apple SSD to make it update.. There was a subsequent firmware update during Mojave/Catalina which removed this restriction. Monterey installer would have installed that latest boot rom so your third party SSD should work now.

very nice info. my 2013 thrash can's ssd just died. All the parameters of the ssd looked good too. there wasnt a lot of use cycles too. I wan't really expecting this. I was running sierra on it. Now I guess I'll install mojave since Catalina does not support any 32 bit applications as far as I understand. I hope It would allow installing mojave on a new ssd. back in the day firmware updates used to be separate installers from apple. now they are hidden inside os upgrade. I once tried a newer os on a macmini (the one with dvd slot in front), ssd speed used to be ~100MB/s. after trying new os it never got faster than 40~MB/s and I was not able to downgrde the firmware. so I stopped upgrading os on any of my macs. I upgrade original os once but never twice newer than the one it came with. I hate forced obsolescence.

Excellent video, it's been a year since this video, have you managed to know how Monterey can be installed using a non-Apple SSD? I have seen that people clone the Apple disk and pass it to a Samsung ect. I have a Mac Pro 6.1 Trashcan and I would like to put a faster SSD on it. Thank you for your very instructive video

I just installed Monterey on a non Apple SSD, using an adapter. It was very smooth. The key is to run the Monterey installer using the original Apple Drive. There is a firmware update that will only run with an Apple SSD in there. Once you have updated the firmware, you can, you can install on a 3rd party drive with the adapter.

these macs are very finicky - the last time I though my mac died and found out after some time that dust particles blocked some connection in between the parts. Cleaned out, reconnected everything and it turned on without any issues.

Hi, I updated my trashcan to Montrerey and had a thunderbolt storage device attached at the time. Came back to a black screen & unresponsive keyb/mouse. Unplugged everything, tried the usual reset smc/pram etc but all it does now is light up the panel when I power it on which stays on for about 30 seconds. The power button does not light up. Any ideas?

Hey mad science Ive been digging thru the depths of the internet trying to find and answer, with no luck. Maybe you can be a beacon of light. I updated mac os on my mac pro 6.1 a week ago, it was fine for several days. One day I did some video editing, rendered off a video and later in the night shut down as normal. When I booted back up the next day, no signal from HDMI on my monitor. Tried diff cables and even plugged in an old mac LED monitor via mini display port, with nothing. So either its a software/driver issue, but how am I supposed to even reformat a mac without seeing the screen? or the GPU has incidentally failed. If you have any words of wisdom on what to try or do, I would be eternally grateful. Cheers Lonesome Dog

@@dark1stu in my case when i press the button to turn it on it starts ok, lights on the front panel but it doesn’t boot, it makes no sound, nothing on the screen. I’m not able to start using recovery mode because it just doesn’t start. It was working fine, but I noticed i was taking longer and longer to boot. Apple doesn’t provide proper customer care in my country. The tech guy think is probably the logic board but he can’t be sure because is almost impossible to find another board to test. Researching about it I learned about an issue with some gpus. He changed the battery and cleaned the inside. Cant do a smc reset. It had a problem starting up 2 times this year. I did everything I could the next day it was ok. The same happened last week but it doesn’t boot. I wasn’t even using it every day. Also noticed something wrong with sleep mode. I know it can be related to the logic board, but it just makes no sense, nothing happened, I shut it down Friday, Monday it wouldn’t turn on. Tech support here is not very familiar with the mac pro trash can. I hope you can help me figure out what might be wrong. I know you have a lot more experience with this setup than anyone here. I want to rule out other possible issues: SSD? GPU? Something to do with the battery not being charged? RAM? How can i reset smc without turning it on? Can the logic board be fixed by the tech guy? Help please!!!
