I used to work for a furniture retailer. The company made an effort to “inform” customers about the historical use of veneers on fine furniture in order to allay their concerns that anything that wasn’t solid wood was crap. They produced a long and wordy script for us sales people to tell customers. I never used it. Because veneer on crap particle board is still crap.

Love the attention to detail! I use a similar technique with wood filler or putty when repairing screw holes or nicks in wood railings, posts or treads (for example, when removing child gates). Beyond stain, crayons, shoe polish and fine markers go a long way in helping blend color and grain if you just take a few extra minutes.

I used shellac sticks back in the day for serious repairs, customers could not believe it when I challenged then to find the original flaw- they always failed. Retired now and 40 years later I still have my kit, although rare to find genuine wood veneer products, everything is lithographic representations printed on vinyl, aka "Ikea" veneer.

Ideation 80% Product choice 60% Execution 40% Yes, fill, but why thermal wax/plastic when fillers are better, and half the grain effect appears naturally. Then, with your black marking, you want to position yourself so your wrist is supported and you can açurately and deftly apply the effect. Your, kinda hovering and hoping awkward touch and go(s) were anxiety producing to watch. The very real idea that you would stuff that was shared by every skilled repair and tool type out here. Great idea to share, just execution really hard to watch.
