How to fix a steering column rattle in a 2005 Silverado 2500HD.
The steering column in my truck rattled for YEARS when going over bumps in the road or while turning the truck at slow speeds. The rattle sounded like it was coming from under the dash.
I did some research, and most people said the fix is to remove the 15mm bolt from the intermediate steering shaft and move the shaft in and out to redistribute the grease. This did not fix the problem.
I then decided to replace the intermediate steering shaft (~$100). That made the rattle less apparent, but did not completely fix the problem.
I did some more research and found that the source of the problem may be the steering column bearing under the dash. I replaced this bearing, and that fixed it. No more steering rattle.

The fix takes ~1 hour and can be done with a 15mm socket, 15mm wrench, flat-head screwdriver, and some grease. Save some money and do it yourself.
