I am super diligent about maintenance and was just about to change this filter but it was just a bit too late.
WHAT HAPPENED ? - Well watching the video you will see the chronological order of events we took to discover the problem. First of all the oil pan seal blew out and the truck started dumping oil out of the oil pan. We fixed that and it blew out the rear main seal (Seal between the engine and transmission). Seems crazy that both seals would have gone at the same time but it was caused by a clogged crankcase ventilation filter.
As reliable as the big old diesel engines are like our Cummins they still need to be maintained. We were about 700 miles away from doing a valve lash adjustment and replacing the Crank case ventilation filter (CCVF) when it Clogged. This filter is one of those emission things added to the newer engines that have not been completely proved out and can damage your engine. You need to be diligent about checking this stuff or something like this can happen. I wont advocate it but many people just remove this stuff to prevent damage...
Our truck is a 2010 6.7 Cummins and has most of the modern emissions controls on it. In a diesel engine there is positive pressure in the crankcase and it needs to be vented out. In the past it was just vented to atmosphere through a simple filter. These days you need to vent it back into the intake so that any oil and diesel fumes are re-burnt by the engine. To vent into the intake you need to make sure there is no oil or soot in vented gasses. To fix this the manufacturers put a big filter on top of the engine that acts like an air cleaner. Unfortunately there is oil in the vent gasses and the filter is guaranteed to clog. On this truck you are supposed to replace every 50000 miles but that is probably not soon enough.
If you have a cummins 6.7 engine that is newer than 2008 you need to consider checking your filter. Take the cover off the top of the engine and look at it. If its black with oil replace it... Not worth this problem.
