When performing this surgery on a sock that has been worn and washed many times, the stitches will be very stable and you might not need to pick them up prior to removing the heel. Whenever I've unraveled an old knit I've been amazed at how rounded the stitches are. But a little insurance never hurts.

Yeah, that's the better way to go...using a contrast color for this method.

Crystal clear, perfectly filmed and explained. I didn't know there was a cast on version. I've always used the old Paton's sock where you pick up stitches on the side of each gusset. I'd just need to catch all those as well as the bottom of the flap. I don't know that I'll be trying this, because my heels don't wear through the flap, but they wear past the turn triangle into the sole. Having begun knitting socks for myself about 15 years ago, I could be in for a wave of repairs.
