I had difficulty pulling a 20 year old sprinkler as I wanted to put a 2" riser but nothing like yours. I was wondering if you could have used a "Metal Detector" to locate the sprinkler heads as it has metal in it? Wish someone would develop a powered root cutter for sprinkler heads. I have seen some DIY augers.

Sheesh... I have a mini version of this nightmare in my backyard. Just pulled out 4 big trees that were taking over everything and trying to get the old sprinkler system working. Appreciate this video showing me ways to go about attacking it. Seems like whoever owns that lot should be ripping out those big trees and starting over again or going with different landscaping if they want to extend the life of the newly repaired heads. Really amazing to see what roots can do.

When do you get to the point where you just excavate 3-4' down all around the tree(s) and replace the whole dirt and irrigation, and just hope the tree(s) survive?

Problem with the axe is you can easily destroy the piping, opening up a whole new level of pain. I've literally located nozzles and used a chisel to carefully remove roots in pieces in order to spare the pipe.

We ended up stump grinding them out. Head, pipe, and everything.

Turn off the water lines permanently. Remove trees. Excavate the lop layer down to the curb. Put pavers on top. It's only a parking lot.
