Alternator pulleys have a clutch system that allows it to rotate freely on the alternator drive shaft when spinning in the opposite direction to the normal operating direction, much like a bicycle freehub. The clutch mechanism fails eventually. Mine waited until 191,000 miles before giving up!
In the video I use a special pulley extractor tool with a heavy duty impact driver. It's not possible to do this repair with the alternator mounted to the engine on a Phase III V70 (57 plate onwards). Removing the alternator is a right pain. I needed to also replace the auxiliary drive belt.
