This nice but clueless character might want to do some research into so called toyota warranty claim situations re dust entry because of the airbox design... We're is easy to see Toyota will bend you over again without lube and ram you hard with all they have. But hey toyota are the only real 4x4 you must have if going bush... Just a shame with such pedigree they couldn't make an airbox to keep dust from your 30k engine... There needs to be a high end legal class action taken to these pricks for selling such a f*ck up and screwing over the hundreds of thousands customers who are dusting engines many of whom would have no idea they are doing it

Man what a piece of crap the 200 series is. Spend all that money on it, being expensive asf off the bat, then having to spend even more dollars to fix a design flaw to get it running again. Over rated asf seems toyota is just making a livin off the name not the product it puts out. Why would you put the stock airbox back in again, i know you mentioned warranty in the video but 30k replacement is to messed up to run the same exact setup again.

@@hansschutte5654 i agree. krump 7 yep the 200 series is what’s keeping the value of my hdj100 high due to the fact that out of warranty they are like owning a bmw or Merc come time to even do minor maintenance items on them like injectors costs a fortune. Once the value hits $20k on them a set of injectors will be 1/3 the value of the car and if the engine gets dusted then it’s over the cost of the vehicle to repair which will have them sent to the wreckers.

First up, wash the engine bay before your next swap. Next: disagree with the diagnosis. I recently purchased a Cruiser and all compression was between 60 and 90 psi. The foolish previous owner didn't run an air filter because it kept clogging. On my tear-down all 8 cylinders were stuffed, not just 4. Not sure that 350psi on your car is out of spec for the distance travelled and age of 4wd. Again for my motor, the insides were full of dust and what you showed us seemed trivial. Make sure you fix the cause of whatever let in the dust in your rig... Last thing, how big was the diamond you had to bribe the missus to buy a $30k engine?
@great_offroad_adventures
4 жыл бұрын
If we washed the engine bay it would make a mess on the floor.....how do you fix that? In all seriousness - the car was disabled once the old engine came out (due to batteries, steering lock etc etc).....so wasn’t able to get it outside to clean it. In regards to the diagnosis - what’s the acceptable level of dust to be behind an airfilter? Pretty sure it’s none, so surely anything behind there is going to do damage....why only 4 cylinders? Who knows. But the leak down test shows severe leak around all the rings on the 4 worn cylinders.....which again suggests dust. In regards to age/ vs kilometres.....a 400K old VDJ tests 360psi, I’m only at 280K, so 350-360 being my best readings are still below the acceptable level in my opinion.

So no one from Toyota was prepared to assist at all? Been dying to buy a new 200 Sahara from them this year before they go to the V6 next model year, but not now after watching this! Trip in a van had something catastrophic with his 79 series at just under 100,000 kms - so still under warranty. Had to get it towed from NT to Cairns along with his van etc to have it all fixed. Back in the early 90’s when there were issues with big end bearings on the 80 series diesels - Toyota used to come to the party on labour costs to swap the big ends shells every 100,000 kms even outside warranty kilometers. That was part of the reason Toyota built its cult like following, but not any more it seems. Once upon a time “saving face” to the Japanese owners at Toyota meant something, but no longer. Won’t be buying a cruiser it seems, better stick with the 7.3 F250 a bit longer.

I have searched for information about this dusting issue throughout the net because I have found evidence of dust contamination as well, did a boroscope inspection on the left turbo-looks ok, fingers crossed.The best research/result I have seen has been from here in Aus, see the link :www.project200.com.au/filter-testing/ The thickness of the factory filter seal which should ensure a seal along with regular changes seems to be the best option for a factory airbox. Aftermarket airboxes are not cheap, think close to $1000. Thanks for posting such a relevant 200 series issue. .

I tried all the fixes mate, different filters (like you saw), tape, grease & never found a combination that worked. Definitely agree - genuine filter far exceeds any aftermarket filters (come back next week to find out exactly how).

why didnt you clean the engine bay first,instead of working in dirt/dust.
@great_offroad_adventures

Because it was clean, all the dirt & dust was unseen & covered by trim panels etc....couldn’t clean it once engine was out, as the car was immobility without batteries etc all in.

Sorry if I missed it but what prompted you to check compressing in the first place? Did you have a noticeable problem or was it just routine inspection that uncovered it?
@great_offroad_adventures
4 жыл бұрын
Was down on boost & power, blowing moderate amounts of black smoke....we all thought turbos which is why I went in, but also decided to do compression check before doing turbos, on the off chance it was something hidden. Turbos were needing replacement as well - but obviously also found the compression problem.

How the hell did you get all that for $30k? I have to replace the motor in mine, the long motor alone is $18k from toyota. You mentioned new turbos ($6k), new fuel pump, new cooling system, new pumps etc - all that is way, way over $30k.
@great_offroad_adventures

Was it an option to rebuild your engine? You could probably solve the problem by new a piston or even piston rings.
@great_offroad_adventures

It was, but the time involved to do that was going to cost just as much as putting in the new engine.

Yeah hard decision that one imo. I think you said it had done 280k which means g/box, diffs and everything else have also done that much work as well so hopefully all those bits are more reliable and long lived than it appears their motors are. Was chatting to my brother just now and mentioned your video. He has mates who have just traded their 200 series in for this reason and got..........wait for it.............Hiluxes. Seriously if I spent that much money on one of these things and it broke from a known issue there is no way I would be buying another one of their products. My brother has a Pajero which he uses very hard, off road stuff and towing big weights very regularly. The only thing he has had to replace is shocks on this one at 160k when he finally managed to destroy one. Other than a battery it is the only part he has replaced and it looks like it will go for a long time yet. Don't know why people persevere with these things tbh. He has towed stuff with a 200 series that his mate owns and reckons the Pajero does a better job and uses less fuel. Obviously not as big though.
@phantomwalker8251

pajero are better choice,but hilux,??,there just as bad as the 200.people are brainwashed into toyota,s..ill keep my f series,strong,never break,roomy,multiple petrol/diesel choices for any new/old model.parts from 1965 are still interchangeable,unlike toyota that change every 6 months.

Is it possible to remove the turbos with the engine in?
@great_offroad_adventures
4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is, it’s a prick of a task though, needs to be done through the wheel arches and on one side, you need to remove the studs rather than just the nuts. Because the motor was out, was easier for us just to swap them outside the vehicle.

I would have rebuilt it for sub 15k. It would have been cheaper to run some new rings. Wouldn't have to over size either.
@great_offroad_adventures
4 жыл бұрын
Cheapest I could get a rebuild for was $12.5K, with only a fuel pump, so add on or reuse 280K old injectors, glow plugs etc etc.......or $16K delivered a brand new engine from Toyota.
