Thanks so much for the the tutorial . Replaced 2016 NH 488 drive belt today with success because of your excellent video. A few things were different but you gave me enough encouragement from your video to get it done. I could have not done it without your extremely detailed video. Thanks again!!!!

On my 488 I’ve had to replace the bushing on the sickle bar and wobble box connection. Also the belt had to be replaced which was done by a very good neighbor. Enjoyed your information. Thank you.

Pretty common to have to replace that bushing occasionally. I keep an extra one on hand.

Thanks for the video. I have a NH 477. When I had to change the two drive chains I thought about doing the belt then realized how much work it would be. You proved it is a pain in the butt. Good winter project.

What a pain. The belt on my 472 is frayed on the edges pretty bad. I'm really grateful for this video since it will be a winter project for me.

Great haybines 488 NH Mine never replaced wabble box. Same belt since 1981. Shedded it entire life since 81. Will be parting with it in the near near future.

I replaced mine without taking off the wobble box. Undo the PTO at the BOTTOM and slide the belt along the full length. You do have to take the knife off of the wobble box, but don't have to remove the entire assembly. Undo the shield/plate where the safety sign attaches as he did with it disassembled. You can force the belt through the tight space there to get it around the wobble box without disassembling it as shown in this video. Be careful here. It is a tight fit and I actually had to do it twice because I damaged the belt the first time. Hopefully you can figure out what I did from these brief instructions. I learned this from an older mechanic and it worked for me.

I cussed a few times for you watching this. Did the belt once on our 479. It’s missing pieces again. Once it snaps it’s getting repaired and traded lol. Just replaced the wobble box bearings now I’m working on rebuilding everything on the reel drive side of the mower at the moment. Also if you don’t want to fight the gearbox weight and have a spot to hook a ratchet strap above you a cinch loop around it makes it easier, an engine hoist works also but is an easy headache maker

I liked and needed this video very much.. second year that my fella is gone and haying on my own. Just changing my wobble box on my own ... not a lot of fun. Got driven off my project by a storm . I hope I can do this. How long did changing the belt take just for curiosity.

It took me a few hours. It’s not too bad of a job, do exactly as the video shows and you can do it.

I've done this belt change on a 488. The brief reply below saying the chains do not need to be removed to slide the gearbox out a little is the most interesting optional step. I am sure I removed them, but I was hoping this video would confirm whether the sprockets slide freely on the shaft. I have not found a parts assembly diagram to confirm this as I prepare to do this job for a neighbor's 488. ..This belt does last long after the first cracks appear as do most medium duty belts, if kept tight.

I do not see how this can be done without removing the chains. The sprockets May slide on the shaft but they would have a key and a collar, and would likely be frozen on.

I use a "segmented belt" and can change it out in two minutes. Segmented belts have Polyeurathane sections and clip together much like a chain link. You can actually replace worn segments if needed- I keep them in the tractor tool box and have changed them in the field. The one I have on now has lasted for over 25 years! I have removed two links over time due to stretching, and keep them as spares. kzitem.infolCvwwrDTJLc
