It seems we are both missing our mums for the first time this Christmas. I hope your memories of her stay strong and comforting. I remember the first game I purchased for my Sinclair ZX Spectrum in 1982 and how I loved playing it. It was written mostly in BASIC with a little machine code routine to reset the map display. It was called Battle of Britain by Microgame Simulations and I loved it. Although I switched off the audible Morse Code after a few games to speed things up. Have a great Christmas and a blessed new year. A Time Machine powered by Thyme. Now there's an idea.

Dude! I played this on the C64 as a kid! When I was like 3 years old my father wanted to sell the C64 because he wasn't using it anymore at home and at work he had another computer. I was watching Bugs Bunny and I heard my parents talking about that in the kitchen so I went out and told dad not to sell it I will gladly use it. So many games and Koala Paint, Art Studio... by the time I got to kindergarten I knew all the letters and numbers and on the first day the teacher asked who can count from ten backwards to zero and I was the only one... dude this hit me with a wave of nostalgia and judging by the video it also had a similar effect on you. ^_^ Pet your doggo in my name. :D My wife has a similar expression when I go to her in the kitchen and bother her with something to check out that I am working on. xD Wish you all the best! :)

So sorry for your loss. I know what you mean, I lost my mother in 2019. As a single parent she was always so proud when she was able to provide something for me, like a computer or a newer monitor or a gaming system, things that made me happy. Especially since IT was my future. With her passing she built me one last computer. Building it flooded me with memories. It's because of her and her financial sacrifices that I'm where I'm at today.

Isn't it amazing the little details you remember from your first computer game? That first game that was truly, genuinely yours. For that fleeting moment after you first load the game, and then for what seems like forever afterwards, the rest of the world doesn't matter - you take in every moment including, as you mentioned, what was going on around you at the time... where you were sitting (or standing, or kneeling!) and even what else you were doing while the game loaded (tape games particularly). I am very happy that you got this game back in your collection. Thank you for taking us on that journey of rediscovering the game and all the memories that are brought back to this present day. This video was very special and touching. Yes, you are right. I think the people who watch this channel do get that nostalgia and how powerful it is. Dang, man-- really, I get it. Thank you so much for including us. The older I get, the more I slip into those nostalgic rabbit holes. Two memories that come up regarding video games is when my parents bought my brother and I our first video game console, the Atari 2600 heavy-sixer. The other memory was the very first game cartridge I bought for myself for the NES, Mega Man 3 at the Toys R Us. Kids today won't have any recollection of how things were back then. They had all the box art displayed in the store in massive aisles of video games, with a slip of paper that had the product number on it. You had to take the paper slip to the cashier, pay for it and then you could go to the area of the Toy R Us that the games were kept locked up to retrieve your game. It is that MM3 box art. I see it like it was yesterday, looking at that new, unopen Mega Man 3 game in my hands. Yes... time travel is real. This video is proof. Happy Holidays to you, Perifractic, Ladyfractic and all the Fractic Family.

Talking about nostalgia, I got my first floppy disk in 1981 - it was an Elephant Memory disk (Elephant Never Forgets) with the iconic elephant on the sleeve. For reasons I can’t explain, seeing the Elephant Memory logo transports me back to the pure excitement of capturing bits on a magnetic frisbee when it was all new and uncharted. Somehow writing my first program, learning assembler, copying disks at copyswap parties, getting my first 1200 baud modem, moving from monochrome to color, dumping listings to a dot matrix printer, devouring Compute! Magazine, and so much more is all wrapped into that stupid elephant logo. That particular disk is long gone, but I still have the sleeve. Once in a while I get it out and just stare at it.

What a wonderful episode. Firstly, sorry to hear about your mum. Really tapped into your emotions as you loaded the game. I completely get those little things that spark off a memory - actually it's more than a memory, its hard to put into words. I get it! When I fire up my 2600 there's sometimes some as simple as a sound that takes me back to 1980, I play Spectrum games and a glitch transports me back into my 'Computer Room' as a 10 year old in 1981. I sit these days in my office at home with my Vectrex from all those years ago next to me and just the start up noise wipes away 40 years and I'm back! It's a strange yet wonderful feeling which seems so much more deeply experienced than other memories. It's great (as you say at the end) that in this little niche community there are others who just get that feeling as it's difficult to explain to non believers! Keep up the great work

I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago where they thought Tony Ngo didn't make anything else other than Park Patrol, so it's good to see his name pop up here in the Bandits intro. I loved (and still love) Park Patrol, its proper arcadey goodness. Maybe someone's already mentioned it here, at the time of writing there's 646 comments here, so quite likely! Another great video!

My particular brand of video nostalgia isn't pursing games that I played in my past, rather it's pursuing games I never got the chance to play in my past. (note, I'm much younger) My particular fond memories of computing involve the late 90s and early 2000s. Windows 95, 98, and XP. That was MY era. And there were a lot of games I never got to play back then, which I would have loved to play. And when I insert those games into my era appropriate computer, I find myself forming all new feelings of joy. And then it hits me..... those feelings of joy are the very same feelings that I was looking for when I replay my childhood games. The feelings that I can't seem to perfectly replicate. I realize that as a child, part of the feelings I had were of excitement for something new. Well this is how I feel. I'm sure everyone's different, so that's my two cents.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Mum. Watching your channel it seems like you had a really happy childhood & being invited to share in those treasured memories & nostalgia is something unusual & touching. You seem to have such strong positive emotional ties to your childhood & I am particularly touched by the relationship you describe with your father. I have no memories of having a relationship with my father like you had with yours because unfortunately my dad was an alcoholic & though he was there, he wasn't if that makes sense. My mum on the other hand was a treasure. Hearing you talk about you & your dad on the computer together makes me nostalgic for something I never had. Treasure your memories, you seem to have had a good family & to me it is why you are here bringing those good times for us to share. Oh & by the way my 1st computer was the Atari 400 when I was 17 (bit older than you). Thanks for sharing this! It's tough losing parents. I played Bandits on a relative's VIC-20 about 40 years ago. And after that I found there was a version for the C64 as well. And a friend played it on the Atari 400 or 800. I quite like this game. It was among the first games I played as a kid and those early gaming moments had a huge impact on me as a kid. I liked it a lot more than the Atarisoft Galaxians on my C64. I think these almost too vivid memories are a result of how our minds work. During our first years many things are experienced for the first time and all the things we experience later are less intense and or get blended in the sheer amount of time we've lived already. For a kid an afternoon playing a game might seem like forever, for older folk an afternoon whizzes by in the blink of an eye.

As Christmas approaches I find myself getting nostalgic and want to break out the C64 and start my refurb project on it. I have to resist because the grandson will be in town and I have to finish the dozen or so microcontroller projects I have planned for us while he is here. I'm a bit older that you so I didn't have computers until I was about 21 so there isn't a lot of childhood nostalgia with computers. I want my grandson to have many great memories of him and his Papa building crazy computerized projects when he was a kid. @@RetroRecipes How old were you when you got played that game? I just don't remember your age even though you have stated it many times, though I think you were born in 1975, which would make you 7 yrs old in 1982? I remember my first encounter with a computer like it is a movie that I have replayed every day. It was Commodore 64 and I was 5 or 6. In a years time half a dozen relatives, or friends of the family had Commodore 64 and almost every one played that specific game. I don't remember the name and that's frustrating as I would have loved to play that game on emulator. But there are other games that give me much more nostalgia. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, just writing the name gives me goosebumps, playing that game with my friend (we were both six year old) was amazing. The music in that game raises my anxiety and my gives fight or flee activity. I live in Finland, we had the most amount of Commodore 64s per capita in the world. We had radio stations broadcasting C64 games from 83 to 85. I also remember the father of my best friend to use C64 with a 300 baud modem to handle his banking/financing in 1987. To summarize, this is the best video about nostalgia I have ever seen ( at least from the perspective of who appreciates the 80s computing ) and just watching you have those feelings brought all the memories from the past like I was reliving them again. Nostalgia is bittersweet, but I think it's appreciating the past, time lived, our parents etc. and overall it can be really guiding force if understood correctly. I meant to only ask your age, but couldn't help myself apparently. I hope both Mauricio Tonnera and Perifractic understands =)

I can clearly remember my first game on my 16K Spectrum nearly 40 years ago - it was Planetoids by Psion that my dad had ordered along with the Speccy itself. The trouble was when we unboxed said computer the centre pin at the Speccy end of the UHF lead was broken off completely. So sitting there on the living room carpet in front of the TV my dad held the lead in place while making sure there was a picture on the tele as Planetoids loaded up for the first time. Bless him, he held that lead in place for a good half an hour or more, only occasionally and carefully changing hands once in a while as not to lose the picture as the yellow lumps flew around the TV screen. It's memories such as these that mean so much to us, and we will always treasure - every once in a while I'll load up Planetoids on one of my Speccy emulators and fondly reminisce that day sitting in front of the tele, my dad by my side holding that lead in to ensure I wasn't disappointed 😊

I'm getting used to it. But it's like what you said about nostalgia...it's like the music of life and joy that filled the space, you experience so much with the ones you love and then suddenly it stopped and it's eerily silent. So every once in a while you want to go back, even just for a moment to relive them and bring back that joy... that's usually what gets me to cry... yeah... I understand what you're saying... it's not TMI... it's telling it like it is!!! My heart-felt sympathy to you and your family... Happy Holidays, enjoy them as much as possible, this will become the future's Nostalgia! Live it fully and savor the moment that is "now" and I recognize that you're integrating memories of the past into the present... really, it's all about life... about to get a bit spiritual here, but there's a deeper knowing when you do that, it's about something you can't put your finger on... but you know is significant and important. Sorry for the long comment, I know they don't get read, but your video touched my soul and it resonated with me... 🙏 thanks.

@@RetroRecipes Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate the community of like-minded people that share nostalgia in the old computers. We carry on the legacy of these machines as living history to tell others... I'll continue to be around commenting on your videos and contributing my stories...staying in touch. And I agree that loved ones do live on in our hearts, I think of them often... It can sound silly, but the simplest things can make me get all mushy, like today when I got a kitchen towel out of the drawer; I remembered the day we were together shopping at Costco and she said we needed new towels and she picked them out... it's funny because at the time it seemed so inconsequential and now suddenly it has a significance... funny and sad at the same time... Has that ever happened to you?

@@raymitchell9736 Yes it’s happened a lot recently as Christmas draws nearer. Just silly little things like you mentioned. I’m quite good about being pragmatic about death and that it is a part of life that every single soul will experience and is therefore something we all have in common. But sometimes it hits me a little less pragmatically. I was just a moment ago thinking about how mum told me she wasn’t scared of death but didn’t want to go because she would miss us all. So yes they’re always little memories and sometimes big memories. However the more we discover about life the more I’m sure that there is much more to this existence and they are living more awakened now than they ever were on Earth. I really believe that. I hope this helps and thanks for agreeing to stick around. Much love ☃️

My dad bought me an Atari 2600 in January 1981 for good grades. I was in 3rd grade at the time. Truth be told, he wanted it as much as I did. I have great memories of playing Space Invaders, Combat, Asteroids and Real Sports Baseball with him. He had a special Wico joystick that we were not allowed to use. I have a copy of his joystick and all the games along with a few hundred 2600 and 7800 carts. My favorite arcade game as a kid was Galaga, we would walk a mile from home for my mother to get her hair done and I would get $1 in quarters. I played Galaga every week. I now have an untouched original one in my garage. I even found and bought a Tyco race track my parents got me when I was about 7 or 8. Each item I collect brings back memories I had forgotten. My dad passed in 1997 and my mom in 2013, I cherish every good memory that this hobby helps me to hold onto.

I have TWO first computer games that I bought when I got my Commodore 64. The first was "Crush Crumble, and Chomp", and the other one was "Temple of Apshai". "Crush Crumble and Chomp" is one of my all time favorite games, and I've never seen another like it. I recall that my first ever game that I bought when I got my IBM PC clone, was "Dragonstrike". My absolute favorite game for the C64, though, had to be "The Adventure Construction Set". No matter how many games I got for that computer, I would ALWAYS go back to it, right up until I retired my C64. I pushed that game to points that I can imagine that the developer never dreamed it could go. I created tons of RPG's and just... all kinds of competitive games... with the thing. I remember making all kinds of mini-games with it too.

Probably the strongest Nostalgic reaction I have had, was only a few weeks back while browsing "flea"bay for Amiga and C64 stuff. Somehow I came across some Nintendo Game and Watch LCD hand held games. It was probably decades ago when I had last given these any thought whatsoever, yet I was instantly transported back to that very moment when my Father handed me that little box containing my very own G+W Soccer...sorry..."football"... game. I was so excited to have this electrical marvel of my own. Sorry for your loss. Keep up this amazing work that you do.

So great that you were able to keep the joy in it all so much. Heartwarming! Inspiring! I love your "8-bit Bob Ross" videos :). Happy little games! And....! I never had an Apple II, but I downloaded directly an emulator and this beautiful game. Thank you very much! I hope you keep making your awesome videos for a few more years. Firstly, sorry for your loss. I did suspect when you filmed visiting your old home. I just lost my Dad this past week due to "the event". Thanks so much for sharing your first replay of your first game. What an amazing experience to share with us. I hope to do the same when I eventually get my Philips G7000 working and play Munchkins for the first time in a long time. I love your descriptions of Nostalgia. One of the main reasons I watch. You really get it. The feelings more than the technology become the focus. Some games, even though I owned them, do nothing for me when I replay them. But others transport me back to the when and the where, and also the who (as in who I played them with). All the best for you and your family at Christmas. May 2022 be as good as 1982, and I hope it is a year of building great memories, not just recalling them.

First of all, I hope this isn't too weird, I would give you a huge hug if I could. I know more or less how you feel, with similar recent experiences and nostalgia. Thank you very much for sharing. The game while I never played, looks solid good. If you take into consideration the date it was released, it looks fantastic too. A few years ago I managed to find my favorite game of all time, after searching for it since 1987 and while it wasn't my first owned game (how could it as I just found it boxed), it was an amazing feeling to at least hold it in my hands. I never stopped playing it thanks to emulation and how much I like it. I never owned or played anything from Sirius Software, but I did import a game from a UK company called Serious Software, back in 1990-1. I remember paying about 17000 drachmas for the game and another 12000 for bank fees. Costing me about I believe over 100 US dollar in 2021. For an early teen that was a huge amount of money. Obviously not the same company, I just thought to share this tiny story with you. Be well.

My first video game was a little Konami game for the SEGA Genesis (I know in the UK it was called MegaDrive, which actually makes more sense, especially as the previous system was the Master System) called Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure. Every time I power on the console, hear the Konami logo music and then the chiptune version of the opening theme of the show clip in on the title screen just takes me back. Every. Single. Time. So many fantastic memories.

@@RetroRecipes No and thank you, I hadn’t seen it and yes I’ve tried that with my dad, unfortunately his sense of smell disappeared some time ago, but occasionally, just occasionally something will make it work again, like the smell of rubber bands from when he was a postman. There’s also the recent study into music and rhythmically tapping to reroute the parts of the brain that controls movement, which helps with his tremors. Perhaps some combination can give him some quality of life back. As for my first game, it was 3d monster maze on the ZX81.

There was a game I had on the Amiga 500. Called 'War game creator' or something similar. It presented a grid battle map. Just lines but you could change elevations on the grid. You could create unit cards for the forces of each side. It had a pre-setup battle of Gettysburg. I spend hours with it as I was creating fantasy armies. But I've never been able to find this game. It was around the time of Elite II.

Memories are the only thing you truly own. Hopefully you will have enough good ones to get you thru the low points. We were blessed to grow up in the age and generation that we did. Nothing like school's winter Christmas vacation decorating everything, dialing into BBS's checking out what we could, hunting down new games and programs, but still needing an outdoor fix to build snow forts and go sledding !!

It is really rough losing your parents. Especially hard is the holidays. One of my nostalgic moments was remembering playing Avalon Hill's Telengard on my C64. I bought the game (not my first one, but a tape I bought) and absolutely loved the tape loader music. I remember really not loving listening to the music and then having the load fail. I have been searching off and on for the tap file for that game (uunsucessfully) for a while just to listen to the loader music and the nostalgia hit from that. Music/sounds and smells are the strongest nostalgia triggers for me. Wonderful episode. Thanks for all that you do and keep the memories alive.

Chris, when I made my Retro Recipes Tribute video a few months ago, you commented that after the events of that week you needed that little lift to your spirits. Something seemed off and I wasn’t going to pry, but I presumed something bad was going on (I thought maybe one of the pups was doing poorly or something). I’m presuming your at that time this is when your mom passed, and I am truly sorry. Both of my parents are gone now and I empathize with my heart and soul. Mom &! Dad are never gone, my friend. I keep the spirit of my parents alive and even 3-year-old Harley Fractic (whom has never met her grandparents) know who they are through photos, video, our stories, and even a special 1992 Hallmark Christmas Ornament that digitally recorded a skit we three, my parents and I, did. Keep mom close, CJ. She’s there with you in your heart and your soul. This video was fantastic as usual, but it had a very special touch of rare magic this time and she helped make video, edit and upload. I never met your mom, but I could see she was there. A big hug from your friend, Doctor Skodt. Hello to the Lady and the pups. It was in 1981 when she bought us our first Atari 2600 and for 1 year we had only 2 cartridges - Combat and Space Invaders. Eventually we got more when the U.S. market crashed for cheap. Some stories are behind getting cartridges like Pac-man. Hehehe. In the 90s, Mom bought her own Atari Lynx after me and my friends also bought Lynxes. She got really good and beat Rygar and played Crystal Mines 2 a lot. She loved pinball simulations and is the reason we have Pinball Fantasies and Ruiner Pinball for my 64-bit Atari Jaguar. And in her last 5 years she got her own Windows XP desktop and played games with it. Bejewelled occupied many hours of her time.

Thanks for bringing back memories. I remember the game on the C64. This little thing eating up the apple in the intro screen gave me a flash back :-) My used C64 that my parents spent a lot of money for (growing up in eastern part of Germany with no easy access to computers) had a faulty chip resulting in one input from the joystick port II not working (joystick up was not recognized). No chance for a repair at this time behind the iron curtain, so I was not able to use the shield in the game until I learned enough about machine language, assembler and how to change bytes in the code before the games runs to change the port in the games to joystick port I. Looking for 01DC in the code that addresses and change it to 00dc in the hope that it fixes my issue. As port I (oar A) had additional functions it did not work for all games, but at least for a few. I think that was one of the reasons that kicked me into a long IT career.
