"Just a migraine" Ouch. That's a horrible title. It wasn't a stroke, thank goodness, but migraines are far worse than most people think. "Oh you've got a bad headache." No. I don't. I have a MIGRAINE. It's not the same illness. There are lots more symptoms, even temporary blindness.

Earlier in the day I had had an aura, so I figured it was a silent migraine, which I've had before but never with aphasia. Did a stroke test (stuck out tongue, smiled, etc...) just to be sure. After about 10 minutes all was back to normal. It's such a weird feeling when your body won't follow instructions. My migraines start with my vision being a little off, I then think to myself "am I getting a migraine?". To know for sure, I close my eyes to see if I am seeing an aura. My aura is similar to when you look at a very bright light bulb, then close your eyes. It's electric green, yellow and blue flickering zig zags and is like a moon shape on the outside of my field of vision. The aura quickly becomes much worse, I get a blurry tunnel vision with the zig zags and no longer need to close my eyes to see them. I also see blobs floating in front of my eyes and start really struggling to see. This can last for anything between 10 minutes to an hour. After that I start to get a sever head ache, after a while the side of my head starts to hurt as if I been punched really hard, the head ache and pain lasts for 3 days. And for those 3 days, I feel really tired, like a really bad hang over x5.

Typically when I get migraines I have extreme difficulty in reading. It's the strangest thing and really hard to explain. It's like my eyes see the words but they get kind of blurred/shimmery and my brain is extremely slow to understand the words. It takes a full minute to put together the thoughts for a single sentence. It's not just my vision that is obscured but also the understanding. Yesterday I got another migraine and tried to read out loud in front of my boyfriend. I sounded like this lady. It was very hard to put words together. It's like your brain is lagging out, and you are aware that you sound insane. You speak more slowly, slur, and straight up say the wrong words. This passed in 10-15 minutes and then I was fine, but my boyfriend was like WTF. I can 100% relate to what this lady experienced, but at the same time I can understand how those who have never had a migraine themselves would be really confused. They'd probably think there was something seriously wrong with her (or that she had a stroke, like people thought).

Thank you for raising awareness on this serious health issue! I suffer these attacks all the time, in my case due to Basilar Migraine with brainstem aura. They are terrifying and humiliating. My episodes generally start with aphasia similar to what was shown here, as well as loss or distortion of sensory input. Then quickly lead to vertigo, disorientation, confusion, and sometimes loss of consciousness. When they occur in public, I am usually treated like I am drunk or insane because onlookers cannot otherwise fathom what is happening and I am rendered completely unable to explain myself. Rarely has anyone tried to help. Those who do try have no way to know what I need. (a cool dark place to lie down and rest, or preferably a way to get home before severe migraine headache sets in.) Once, at a garage sale in a nice neighborhood, I even had someone take advantage when I lost vision, communication and ability to stand up as an opportunity to steal my purse.

I’m actually in the hospital right now recovering from one too. They’re definitely not fun though, EVERY time I get one I have to go to the ER just to make sure it isn’t actually a stroke. When I get one, I can’t see out of right eye, the right side of my face looks like it melted down my face, my right arm and leg go so numb that if I try putting pressure on my leg without support, I will fall. I can speak what I want to say because it comes out so slurred I’m not even sure it’s what I thought about. I can’t swallow because the right side of my face goes numb as well. I have to go to speech therapy and physical therapy each time to sort of build up my strength to walk normal and pick stuff up with my weak arm and help me swallow normally so I don’t get aspiration pneumonia, even then I’m kind of thinking it’s useless because I’ve had one ever my month so far since August. I am honestly so depressed from this, I don’t want to do anything because I’m so afraid I’ll trigger another one and this one will be worse. Honestly, it feels good to get this out, even just to the internet.

Only my PCP really does and tries to coordinate with everyone I’m seeing so it’s all managed. But my neurologist just kind of brushed me off and prescribed me another medication. My rheumatologist prescribed me a medication that will hopefully help my joint pain (another issue not technically related to the migraines but whatever undifferentiated connective tissue disease I have). It’s really hard because I’m still going to school full-time and I HAVE to work because even with financial aid, I need to work to pay for my courses. Alright, I’m about to bombard you with questions. Did you grow out of it? Do they know what caused it? Do you take a certain medication that you found helped yours? How did you manage yours, especially stress-wise? I find I’m very anxious to be out in public because if I have an episode, it won’t be at home and they don’t know what to think, usually they think stroke, and it’s kind of a nightmare for me because I’m aware of everything, I just can’t say what I want to or move in the way that I want.

I had a diagnosis of a subclinical deficiency, along with anti body markers for thyroid. My GP didn't pick on these things for years so I suffered for years. I am just relaying this to you because I have found it quite remarkable that the side effect of taking the meds was one migraine a year instead of one a month. She is having a Hemiplegic Migraine. It's the condition I have. I'm doing a lot better now, I still get them but it is rare now. It can be genetic which is how me, my brother and my father got it. I am a little annoyed as to how down played it is in this video. Yes it is stroke like symptoms but I wish they went more into what people suffering with this disorder have to live with. It's almost like they are saying "oh don't worry, it is just a little headache." There are triggers for this sort of Migrane attack (I unfortunately dont know mine) but it can be related to stress and/or changes in lighting. If anyone has any questions about this condition I will be happy to answer from my own personal experience.

So is your condition bad when you get an attack? I also have HM but it isn't this worse yet (was diagnosed in July 2020). So when I get this aura I start to feel very dizzy and my eye sight gets blurry. My ears will start making high pitched noises and my muscles are weak, also get tired and trembling a bit, I still have control over them and my speech but its damn exhausting to move. Only one time I wasn't able to move my fingers. But I'm glad that my speech is still working and I'm not paralyzed. What's your experience?

@@silversnow-gamingchannel Hello! I had my first HM when I was 13 and it was one of my worst. I thought i either had an allergic reaction to something since i was in a forest with friends or i was having a stroke but it was in fact a HM attack. I must say that you have different symptoms to what I get however it is a spectrum so not everyone will have the exact same. My experience is that my left hand would go numb (Pins and needles) and it'll slowly spread up and over half my face. At this point I will not be able to move my left side and I will become confused when I speak. I will say one word and something else will come out. My vision will sometimes get blurry or I will hallucinate. After that passes and I get feeling back over the course of an hour a splitting headache will set in. It hurts so bad that you have to be shut in a dark room for hours. The headache lasts up to 12 hours and vomiting occurs. Then you are left with a hang over headache which is mild compared to the one before. Then it'll pass after a few hours. Unfortunately the only thing I can do during this time is try and force myself to sleep. At the age of 20 I still get them but sometimes they are shorter and might not have all of these symptoms. I hope this helps ❤

I have the same condition. My migraines cause me to have trouble talking. It looks like a stroke but it's not. I get where I just try to hide from people during those times because I feel embarrassed. As well as feeling very frustrated. I have to stop talking. The stress of trying to force myself to talk makes it worse.

One time in my life I was attacked by a severe migraine. It was painful that i could not say whats in my mind. My mind was saying "turn off the radio" but I say "turn off the water". I an here myself saying "turn of the water" but even if I tried to say "turn of the radio" I could not say because I don't know the word radio. I just know the machine but the radio it never enters my comprehension. But one thing I remember that before my migraine gets severe I request for water to drink.

This just happened to my husband. He saw an optical aura (flashing lights in his periphery), then the 8/10 pain level migraine occurred. With that, he lost the ability to comprehend speech or speak. Started vomiting and was in a state of delirium by the time we were admitted into the ER. They gave him a migraine cocktail, IV and a CT scan. He was released a couple hours later and proceeded to sleep for 15 hours once we were home. Absolutely terrifying. Migraines are not headaches.

Not a “medical mystery solved”. Migraine disease is still not understood and the symptoms are so much like stroke symptoms in some cases that researchers now believe there may be a direct connection to stroke and migraine. Also some migraines can cause a stroke. I have had major migraines with aura and strokes as well as mini strokes. My first stroke was at age 38 with no risk factors.

I have suffered with similar symptoms twice now before a migraine has hit. Normally I have flashing lights in my eyes followed by dizziness then the headache which lasts hours. But twice I've lost the ability to spell words and struggled to understand simple words when trying to read. And once I couldn't speak properly just like the reporter. I had suffered with migraines for years before these symptoms started occurring and I must say it's incredibly scary when it happens.

Had one of these yesterday. No history of migraines. Was reading the news. Next thing felt like a bee sting on the front of my head. Felt hard to breathe. Then it was like the lights are on but nobody’s home when it came to responding to questions. On top of that everything from my waist up/neck down was tingly and numb. Arms, hands, and even my stomach. Was a very scary experience.

I was just diagnosed with complex migraine phenomenon, I have vision, hearing, speech, confusion, weakness, fevers etc. I had 4 acute strokes before and I can say that you feel exactly how you feel with a stroke. Her comment of on drugs or drunk hits me hard, only because that’s how I look when then episodes happen. I also have multiple sclerosis so my panel of doctors aren’t exactly sure what is causing them. To everyone who has them, I feel your pain and frustration physically, emotionally and mentally. I wouldn’t wish these migraines on my in laws.

When the migraine is off the chart i don't make sense and it is SO frustrating, scary, and confusing, and i do cry, sometimes laugh at the words that come out, and just have to deal with it. When you have them for the first time and you don't know whats going on its very scary. I remember having a Hemiplegic Migraine and an Aura Migraine at the same time for the very first time and I was terrified. I've never felt pain like that in my life. My Migraines were getting worse. And unfortunately, I did have some memory loss. Once I was becoming more aware of what was going on a month later during that time. I remember that the ER doctor told me that I could not remember how to talk, I didn't remember y name, address, dob, why I was in the hospital and I even forgot my own mum. It was literally like being a prisoner in your own body. I was also temporarily paralyzed on my right sided. Unfortunately, people don't understand how severe and scary any type of migraines are. Many people have the miss conception that migraines are just headaches but not realizing that Migraines can send a person into a coma or death.

I started getting acm “complex” migraines like these in 2023. Before I knew I had these migranes, I ended up in the hospital for stoke like symptoms where I was slurring my word, couldn’t hear words, and wasnt able to form proper thoughts. Eventually I just stopped knowing what was happening, and went into flight or flight mode. I don’t remember most of it, but it was terrifying, and I dread getting another one, and not being able to get it under control.

Had these my whole life. Working as an auto mechanic, I had an episode much like the reporter. I was attempting to remove the wheel on a customer's car, and four of the wheel lug studs had snapped off. My father saw what was happening and suddenly pulled me up and away from the car and into the office. As it turned out, I was tightening the lug nuts rather than loosening them. I suffer from Migrain Auras sometimes which I've noticed is caused by lack of sleep, dimmed light to bright light straight away or smoking too much and not eating enough (when I use to smoke). And the slurr speech which I experienced twice in my life was not long after my oldest and my baby were born. So I'm guessing lack of sleep and not enough nutrients maybe. I don't know, but to tell you the truth they're both not nice to experience it's scary.

I suffer from migraines daily for over the last year. I am also a nurse. YES this condition does give you a headache! BUT NOT everyone suffers that intense headache the inter time. They ARE a neurological disorder, the most common one out there. That is why you don't just get headaches with it. I also hear voices, which I hate. But it is always my son's voice calling out to me, saying something. Or I am getting into trouble. Some people also get terrible stomach pains. Lucky me. It's like intense child birth pains. Other times before I even know what is going on, I get numb arms on both sides. Then I get these too.that's my Aura to know to take my medication. Go home & buckle down because it is going to hit hard again. Today seems to be my breaking point though. My meds hardly work, so my migraine goes along getting worse. I can't go to the hospital because it is so lou & bright. It's best to stay at home. I have heavy duty pain killers here & nausea meds. But I have truly had enough. My life is a ruin now with these migraines. I can't drive or enjoy what I used to because as soon as I try to do anything, it sends my BP up, causing the start of the Auras which turns into Complex Migraines, which are generally Hemiplegic and/or Basilar Artery were I spend days, were you are supposed to be in hospital, being unconscious. I give up. I can't do this anymore. A bullet through the base of my brain will fix them.

The poor lady! I have migraines and they’re the worst. Auras make it hard to see and walk and nothing makes sense. It’s really scary. Sometimes they last for days, and on top of the pain there’s nausea. I usually only know I’m getting one when I suddenly can’t see because of a black and white zigzagging crescent (it moves and it’s incredibly disorienting) in my vision that also makes a blurry spot. And then it makes it hard to walk somewhere to sit down.

I’ve had migraine with aura since I was 14 years old, it’s no joke. I’ll be 38 in a few months and the older I get the more these type of migraines scare me. It can be quite disabling for those who don’t understand or have never had to go through it. While it can have the same symptoms as a stroke people like myself need to be aware that if you have migraine aura you are already at an increased risk for stoke

I've also experienced migraine attacks a few times just like this when I was around 16. The very first one started off with a visual aura, I couldn't see in one spot. This never happened before, so I just laid down to try to sleep it off. When i woke up my head was hurting like it never did before. At that point I lost the ability to form normal words/sentences. My dad was home but he couldn't understand what was wrong. I could speak again after like 30 seconds. But then the whole right side of my body went numb, even half of my lips and tounge. I was really scared but for some reason we didn't call the ambulance trough this whole thing. After the numbness was gone, i began puking a few times, all while my head was still really hurting. It calmed down after like 3-4 hours. Had another one a year later, all the same except i didn't lose the ability to speak. When the visual aura appeated while i was having breakfast with my parents, i knew it's gonna happen. This one also lasted 3-4 hours. Since then, they never came back (I'm 25 now), and hope they never will. Very scary stuff. I am just so relieved to read that I am not alone with this. Nobody really knows anything about migraine attacks where I'm from, so I could never find people who share my experience. Hope all of you are doing good! Be safe :)
