Worked loss prevention for 20 years. If your company is pressuring you for stops then it’s not a question of “if” you make a bad stop, it’s a question of “when”.

If there's doubt , just politely ask for a receipt at the door. Also if you see someone put something in their coat or pockets , NEVER EVER take your eyes off of them in case they get cold feet and decide to ditch the item in a corner somewhere where you couldn't see them do it. And if you aren't 100% positive that they still have the item you should never approach them or you are playing Russian Roulette with your job.

In a way, I feel bad for the AP. I can see how he thought it was theft. I mean if you see someone open up a cage that is only supposed to be opened by associates, take a high-value item, and then just walk out without paying... The service desk associate should have grabbed the item or had someone grab it for him and done the exchange at the desk.
@nathanscott846

As a HD associate I agree with you. Stupid but reasonable practices like locking high value items are now policy and someone should have unlocked and carried it up to the service desk. It's unprofessional (and I get it's homedeopt but still) to just say to a customer to go and pull out the tool you need because you're returning one thats faulty or not functional. I've still had to carry up whatever it is if it's a high value item to the service desk to get it taken care of. There is a return process they do for returning a non functional item with one that is and people still need to ask for help to get items unlocked rather than pulling open a cage. Granted if their cages pull open that easy that should be one of their main focuses.

He still went about it all wrong. He didn’t ask for a receipt. He didn’t even ask him if she paid for it he just snatched it out of his hand and then never apologized after he found out that it was paid for. That’s the problem it’s not the problem that he thought it was stolen or that he went to even check to see if it was stolen. The problem is he didn’t do his due diligence and made himself look stupid, and then all that explaining at the end, all you had to do was say, I apologize and have a nice day and he would’ve never went viral

I see how he made the mistake but he was 100% wrong he saw him grab the item but didn't see him pay? After he realized his stupid mistake he should have apologized instead of trying to justify it

He should have minded his own business. LP doesn't own the store, they ain't the police, it's a shame society gives these clowns authority. The only reason they're so emboldened is because the police sometimes arrest people for DEFENDING themselves from store AP/security, but without the police to arrest people for defending themselves, it would be war and the LP would lose every time

I do LP myself it's situations like this is the reason why we don't just stay on cameras and watch we walk the floor and follow from point A to point b and also don't take the word of employees that's how a lot of lp loose their jobs because if it's a bad stop they don't get in trouble you do

To be fair He did everything by the book. He got selection, continued selection, and walked out. Theres 0 way for him to know that an associate let him know to take the item. That's why associates are told to go grab the item for an exchange.

As a former asset protection, nothing is more embarrassing than an NPD, a non productive detention. From the sound of it, he's by himself. Unless you have a fellow asset protection detective ON CAMS telling you they see the suspect take the item without paying... never... NEVER go for the apprehension. The fact this guy keeps trying to explain his side, he feels humiliated as fuck.

Problem with accusing people of wrong doing is you better be damn sure you're right or that's a ton of pie on your face. I wouldn't wanna do LP, if you catch them and they claim harm or if they're B and claim racism, you got headaches and if you're wrong, you really got a ton of headaches. Too much of a pain. Dealing with people is awful.

Yeah but you shouldn’t accuse someone if you don’t have no evidence he didn’t even ask for a receipt 🧾 as a loss revention clerk you have to think before action you can get yourself in trouble her or even killed sometimes man you don’t know if that guy not all there in the head he could be a str8 killer this guy is just young and reckless i’ve seen kids like him come in All cocky not knowing the job it’s a mind game. When I worked as a LP I didn’t bum rush someone I would ask them with a frim voice to leave the stuff and I won’t call the cops so if they didn’t listen I was following them form a distance recording them while I was one the phone with police report what kind o no f car they were in and license plate if they had one and description of how they looked Home Depot in Albuquerque have armed security guards basically cops and that’s there job to confront shoplifters
