Very interesting video. I grow all my large flowered cattleya’s in Leca ,but not in semi hydro. Needs watering every other day but plants seem to love it.

I have been hesitant to do the spag&bag method as well. Seems to me to set up a scenario for mold etc. As you say, it works for some folks. More power to them.

Very interesting video, love how you are trying to save these orchids, you are extremely knowledgeable, as a relevant newbie, I would have thought most of them were dead! I do love orchids and have 3 at the moment, 2 which I have in water culture to help the roots :)

Hi! At the moment we have about a 50% survival rate I guess but I think that's probably not a huge surprise given the state of some! E have lots of root growth on the ones that are pulling through! Hopefully thisbseries will be interesting in showing the original state vs which ones made it and see if there are any signs we can look for from the start! Will do an update soon, thanks for the lovely comment and for watching 😀

I have not tried Leca but your technique of using it for getting roots to get growing looks interesting. I have a few stubborn little Phals that refuse to grow roots.

Price doesn’t always constitute a better plant. I deal with several reasonably priced sellers with absolutely beautifully healthy plants. They came packaged carefully and gently. The orchids clearly came from growers who enjoyed and cared for the plants. Then again I’ve purchased high priced orchids from so called “reputable sellers” that were “dead on arrival”. They were obviously poorly cared for, packaged poorly and just couldn’t be saved. So I’m from the belief that you don’t always get what you pay for ☺️

The eBay seller here is a bit of a scammer, the plants so far that bloomed were all wrong IDs, waiting on the dowiana which was the most expensive. I dont think I really mentioned price in the way you are saying, but by all means I agree, this was just a fun project with a bundle of rootless backbulbs from a bad seller 🤷♀️

Is there an update to this video? I have a rootless Cattleya that still looks great, (I waited too long to repot and live in a very humid area...it's 80% humidity in my home right now as it's just rained) but I have had to cut off two backbulbs. It still has 3 full structures and 1 still growing but it is large) I've potted it in bark and leca with a tiny bit of sphag on top near the eyes....I'm praying roots will come back. I don't water, only mist the sphag when it's 'crispy'. I'm in a sub-tropical climate so I don't want to cause rot. I just want hope roots will regrow! Lol.

Your tall plastic cup & LECA method holds the same principle as my sphagnum at the bottom of a tall vase method, so I approve :p Also I definitely think that that pale growth on the jungle eyes is a new growth forming, not a root. It's shaped pretty much exactly like a new cat. growth? But yes, the colour is really odd.

Yeah I agree, thats why I put the text on screen after taking a closer look at it! It's grown more and coloured up now, 100% new growth, think because it was forming buried under the bark mix it hadn't received any light 😅 haha yeah there are many variations of this method out there 😀 the main point is to stop the orchid transpiring as much while it has no roots, but without rotting the plant... the encyclia vittellina has grown more roots so I potted it up in a more normal SH already 😀

It had crossed my mind, but then that's always a risk, especially with eBay sellers... Won't know for sure until it's recovered and blooms. If it isn't a dowiana then I have one VERY expensive unifoliate cattleya 😅🤞 Which would be.... annoying, to say the least 😂

Good luck on your Cattleya Dowiana! This is the definitely best time of year to acquire and adapt one (and most cattleyas) to a new grow area (as you probably know). My recommendation from experience and advice through orchid retailers/hobbyists is to go extremely easy on the watering until the new roots break through for this particular species after repotting or rootless. I was not told about this in time for my fist mature size Dowiana and I kept it lightly most in sphagnum in a clay pot. On my second successful attempt, I followed my local orchid grower's decades of expertise on the orchid and I kept it almost completely dry until new undamaged/broken roots were developed enough to absorb water. It was very worrisome to me keeping it that dry but the roots broke through and grew unbelievably fast, right after the sheaths of the latest pseudobulb dried. I also keep it on the warmer and the higher light side of my Catts. The roots of the Dowiana's usually don't survive long after repotting in comparison to other cattleyas. Often misunderstood, this species is actually considered by many a very vigorous cattleya species and by myself - despite killing my first one and their reputation for being finicky and 'Dowiana Rot'. I would highly recommend not to water until dry, and not thouroughly until until new adapted roots have formed because it is very sensitive to moisture when transitioning. I do however grow most of my cattleyas, rescues included in semi hydro. Sorry for the long story but I would hate to see the same mistake I made happen again and best of luck with your Dowiana and the rest of your rescues.

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and the excellent advice! As you say, the few good roots that it did have died off quite quickly- but it didn't seem to shrivel much and it then started producing lots of new roots from the latest growth! I suppose the dry top layer I get with SH may have actually helped me out with the rot side of things from what you're saying! 😀 The roots are about 2cm long and just starting to touch the top of the LECA (I planted the new growth quite high for some reason 😅) so I've been misting the top layer down once a day to make sure they don't dessicate (some species Cattleyas seem to be more fussy with this than the complex hybrids?), but so far they look good! Just need to get them down into the LECA and then I think it will do fine- it's been very willing to throw out new roots! I guess I caught it jist at the right stage of that new growth luckily 😀 Thanks again for sharing your experience 😀

Hi Annabelle, for the top layer, could small stone pebbles replace the small leca if these are not available or even crushed brick pebbles ?
@TheOrchidRoom
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you could definitely use small pebbles! It may even be better since they arent porous, but by planting a bit lower into the cup you can also avoid the dryness a bit. Never thought of crushed brick, I guess that's basically what seramis is, or crushed porous clay pots. Might be worth experimenting with 🙂

Hi Annabel another question where do you get clear plastic pots like on your video are they plastic tumblers and diy holes for semi hydro ta
@TheOrchidRoom
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah these ones are literally the disposable plastic drinking cups you can buy in packs of 10, which I then drilled extra holes in 😀 for bigger ones I use food storage containers that you get in supermarkets and make the extra holes the same way 😀

@@ALA12KAM34 No problem at all I hope it helps! Fingers crossed for your Cattleyas, let me know how it goes 😀 whatever mehod you try you just want to try raising the humidity around the orchid a bit so it doesn't lose so much water, as without roots it can't absorb any water. Then hopefully it will concentrate more of its reserves into pushing out a new growth and new roots 😀 Another thing I'd say is to keep them a bit more shaded than usual as in bright light they will burn through alot more nutrients 😄 Mine are under an LED light on my dimmer shelf. Good luck! 😀

Hi what anti fungal solution and nutrient solution you use for rescue orchids thank you x
@TheOrchidRoom
5 жыл бұрын
Hi 😀 the antifungal is the one shown in my recovering oncidiums video (treated my miltonia sunset for fusarium with it), Bayer systemic antifungal containing tebuconazole. Only used at initial soak with my standard nutrient solution. After that I don't use any fertilisers until the roots are fully recovered, then I start fertilising as normal 😄

Loved this video! Sometimes I put a top dressing of pumice on top of my leca tribe which helps but I have been wondering about using Seramis on top instead. I don’t have any yet so I wonder if you have tried that or not before I shell out for some. I bought very small leca on amazon which also worked well but I’m running out and the seller didn’t restock so curious about other options. :)
@TheOrchidRoom

So for some of the oncidiums I have in LECA I do actually do this! Either seramis mixed in small amounts through the LECA which wicks water that little bit better (my paph is in a 50:50 mix because I read they like alot more moisture and is doing well). Or as a top layer for the LECA (for my Bulbophyllums). It does seem to work! Seramis is quite pricey in the UK though so if I can get away with not using it I try to save it for the special needs orchids 😆 I just go through my bags of LECA and pick out all the tiny beads for the top and the rest go at the lower half 😅
@MelissaWalker82
5 жыл бұрын
The Orchid Room I really appreciate you sharing this experience! It will be expensive to order the Seramis and even though I have to get the pumice from Germany, it’s still cheaper. Still, my curiosity will probably win out and I’ll grab some of both. Lol. Also I hope that scale is totally eradicated for you.
@TheOrchidRoom

@@MelissaWalker82 I do like Seramis, my Masdevallias also seem to like it also 😀 Going to try it out on the Restrepias next! But it is expensive compared to LECA...I hope the scale has gone too! Hear it's difficult get rid of but the only plus is this plant doesn't have many places for them to hide at the moment..... Ill spray it down again with rubbing alcohol in a few days time! 🤞

If I could make a suggestion for an inorganic top layer to maintain moisture... Has any of you tried strips of microfiber? Functions not unlike sphagnum moss, and helps keep the top layer more most. It looks messy, though.
@TheOrchidRoom
5 жыл бұрын
@@OrchidNerd Moss as a top layer doesn't really work so well unfortunately for me in my environment because the top layer of LECA stays quite dry. So all that happens is the moss also stays quite dry. The reason the Seramis works is beacuse I also mix a little into the mix to increase wicking efficiency (it's small so it naturally settles into the top few layers of LECA beads anyway....). Moss also tends to break up after a few months and little bits distribute through the media... which defeats the point of inorganic :-D

You mentioned having soaked in three things to give the plants as good a chance as possible. We’re the items combined or three separate soaks?
@TheOrchidRoom
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pix 😄 All combined, I usually soak any new orchid in a nutrient solution with added seaweed before doing anything to it to give the plant a head start... Most of these had no roots so the nutrients wouldn't be absorbed but it was just in case any had any roots at all left.... For these guys I added a dose of the systemic antifungal to this solution for the overnight soak, thought process being there were a few with some potential rot issues and they needed all the help they can get! After this soak I sprayed them all down with insecticide before I started work 😅 So they had been thoroughly prepared for the rescue intervention 😂
