You totally can keep it in moss and plant it into the new planter! I have plenty of plants like alocasia and anthurium growing just in moss, including my purple plush and string of pearls. For the string of’s I just use a thin layer of moss to root the cuttings in a very shallow container so that the roots basically grow like a sheet (I use takeout trays) and once they root, I put down a perlite layer at the bottom and then plop the mossy root sheet on top. That way it roots into the perlite and then if you want to put it in soil, it’s easier to pot the perlite into the soil and the moss stays at the top like a top dressing. You can remove it if you want but I don’t because it’s such a thin layer.

I recently made three cord hangers for plant pots, my first attempt at doing something like that. At first I was using the single loop of cord method like you did and was struggling a bit. I found that by putting some weight in the empty pot (I used gravel ) it became much easier to complete the hanger. Then remove the gravel before adding the plant to the pot. Ultimately I made my hangers using 4 lengths of cord, a metal ring and a few simple knots. I think this technique makes it easier to adjust for size, the balance is better and they take just a few minutes to complete. I hope this comment isn’t too long.

Hey Melissa, I was quite impressed with the DIY hanger...you're definitely a much more patient person than I am! And it actually looks great! As you are planning new videos, I would love love love if you could do a video later this season about returning your houseplants indoors after being outside all summer. My particular concern is my strings of… they seem to really suffer when I try to bring them back in. Summer patio exposure is West. Lots of sun.

Sure! I don't put a lot of plants outside but I'll definitely make a video when I do. I know light will be an issue with me because none of them are going to go back into my plant room where the good light is so I'll probably invest in a couple more grow lights. I'll have to figure out where they are all going to go too lol. It stays pretty warm here until November even so I'm going to try and keep them out there as long as possible!

So happy you made this video, I still have my string of turtles in it’s original nursery pot. I’m so scared to move it into a bigger pot. After watching your video, I’m going to put a few cuttings in spag, just in case the mother plant doesn’t survive the transfer. Turtles and the string of hearts are the only string of anything that survived in my care lol. The DIY hanger - Genius! Cheering you on with that turtle fight and string lol Thank you for another wonderful video! 🫶🌷🪴

I had to prop my very full pot of turtles as well… moss looked like a nightmare so I mixed stratum, cococoir, and perlite together and out then in a shallow bowl like you had and it propped like a dream! Plus I didn’t have to untangle tiny little roots to repot. I think the most dreaded part is putting a macrame hanger on for me too. I haven’t done it yet, it’s all laying in my south window sill 🤣

Peperomias of all types usually do great in sphagnum moss, so I don’t think you messed up by doing that originally. Like you said, it was near the dripping Hoya and attracted ants. I hate that aspect of Hoyas, personally. Like my Hindu Rope, it was blooming when I purchased it, and I read that you’re not supposed to cut the peduncles off… well, now we’re on bloom cycle three! 😂 So ants are a concern cause my Hoyas are all outdoor plants here in San Diego… I noticed certain hummingbird feeders come with a special attachment now, like a bottlecap-type thing that you fill with water, and it acts like a moat to prevent ants. It clips around the chord that the feeder hangs on. You can make or DIY a similar thing for plants, if you’re worried about ants crawling into hanging plants. Just use a bottle cap or preferably something larger that can hold some water in it… drill or burn a hole in it, with a soldering iron, then hot glue or silicone it to the hanging pot’s cord or whatever, if that makes any sense… it did in my mind. Lmao. And I’ve done it before.

There needs to be some moisture or the roots that have developed will dry up so over the next few weeks as the soil is drying, I won't do a full water again, I'll just add some to the top couple inches to encourage new roots to form and then just make sure it gets really good light!

I love my string of turtles but hate repotting everything string of. They do grow fast. I’m currently battling ants in a window with Hoyas (no blooms) and my turtles. I was actually thinking about your ant story today and then saw this update. You could drill holes in the turtle planter and make it a hanging planter.

@plantsbymelissa

I think it's been a few months now. I had the main pot under a grow light and the tray I just threw it under my moss pole shelf haha, it didn't get the best light so probably why I had a lot of rot going on in there.
