Yet another great think piece video Steven! I've been on the hunt for a male Hypo Zebra for a few months now. I have a super pastel hypo het Zebra female approaching the 1k mark along with a few others he would pair well with. Super excited for the future of the Zebra project!

Love this video. I agree, investing into racks, incubator, camera equipment, and the travel expenses to network are overlooked. Heck, even starting a rodent colony from the get go or investing in a huge deep freezer to fill your box when ordering frozen.

Hey leviathan snakes! As always, great content! Been following your videos for a while, trying to absorb all of the information I can to succeed before pulling the trigger on getting into this hobby. As someone with a 4-5k budget starting out, which type of morphs would you suggest getting into? I absolutely love clown so I plan on definitely getting into those.

Thank you! Really appreciate you watching and the comment! With $5k budget, I would first ask what are your goals? Hobby for fun or would you want to try to take it to full time business sometime in the future? For business, I personally think Lace Clowns are an awesome project that hasn’t really been tapped into yet. I would buy a couple female clown combos, maybe a lace het clown female combo, and then get the best male lace het clown combo you can afford. That male would then be able to make some amazing lace clowns combos and paired to the lace het clown female, some amazing white lace clowns

Cool video, I think you definitely should have budgeted a 50/55 tub series rack…… you can’t go from a 10 to a 70 series tub. Or at least most of my snakes wouldn’t make that jump and keep eating
@LeviathanSnakes
Жыл бұрын
Most definitely! We have some that will stop eating when they are 1500 grams and they go from a 55 to 70 and we have some babies that will try to take your lunch money no matter the size of the enclosure. One good thing about the 70’s is that you can always put in a hide for smaller snakes and help them feel extra secure.awesome comment and Thank you for watching btw!

Not wanting to buy into DG because of the new info, that doesn't change anything really, is foolish IMO. It's still the best enhancing gene in Ball pythons. I know you guys are super hyped on and continue to hype the sunset project, but let's be honest, there hasn't been a combo that really moves the needle yet, especially as they age. ultramel sunset for example didn't age the best, nor do the sunset clowns. I'm sure someone will unlock the combo that makes the hype warranted, but for now there isn't anything out there IMO

First, thank you so much for watching and for the comment! We really appreciate the different perspective even though we have an opposing opinion. Full disclosure, we are in the SS DG project and not in the Sunset Hypo project so we don’t think DG is bad but if we could do it over, I would go down hypo sunset route. With Sunset, Hypo works way better than DG because hypo sunsets retain oranges while DG turns Sunset gold. The DG news doesn’t change the breeding process much, but it has undoubtably weakened the project because the perception is that it is much more complex. Imagine you are a new breeder, and you are trying to learn all the stuff that goes into ball pythons and you are considering getting an enhancing gene. Right now there are three main options: 1. DG 2. Lace 3. Hypo DG has been king for enhancing genes, but has hit the point where almost everyone has it and prices have fallen fast. Within a year DG Clowns have gone $10k+ to $6k. The added complexity of the project means you need 3 genes for any visual appearance and depending on the exact combination of DG animals, it is possible to never hit a visual (i.e. het to het pairing where both animals are only het for DGa would never produce a visual). The only way to know what your hets are for sure is to pay $60 each to test them which would then mean you need to do that for all the babies in order to sell them appropriately (I know I won’t buy a Het DG now unless it is tested and I know it works with the DG animals we already have, and I know I am not the only one with this viewpoint as I have talked to other breeders about this). 2. Lace has a visual phenotype with 1 gene and rivals DG in the homozygous form. (IMO the White lace Clown looks better than the DG Clown and is also more valuable). Lace is simpler and has a higher upside potential because there is more room for a new breeder to make their mark on the project. 3. Hypo is a simple recessive and while cheaper, far more stable than DG. HBR did a episode where they showed that Hypo Clown prices have actually started increasing and I won’t be surprised in the slightest to see this continue. As a new breeder, I think it is far smarter option to get into lace or a double recessive hypo project right now Vs DG. If new breeders are not buying into DG as much as they have in the past, the people in the project will have a harder time selling their DG animals (especially the hets) and it will further weaken demand for DG and exacerbate the problem of falling prices. As to your thoughts on Sunset, I completely understand that some people don’t like it, but it is obvious at this point that lots of people love it (ourselves included) and there have been several amazing sunset combos (regular sunsets look amazing, sunset clown, sunset Ultramel, sunset Lav, sunset pied, Spotnose sunset clown, cinnamon Enchi Sunset, hypo sunset, yb sunset, leopard yb Sunset, Mojave Enchi yb sunset, banana sunset, etc) made already which has further increased its popularity and why even more people are getting into it. Sunset is the only project where the prices have still stayed above what we bought in for and that is because it has a growing demand rather than a declining one. Overall, thank you again for watching and for the different perspective. Personal opinion, I think a lot of things are working against DG in 2023 and I don’t see a situation where the project gets stronger going into the future.

@@LeviathanSnakes Thanks for the reply, you made many good points that I do agree with. However, specifically pertaining to the DG project, prices were falling well before this new info. When DG clowns were 10k, you were lucky to find one or two for sale on MM at any given time, and when you did they sold fast. It's simple supply and demand, and the supply this year has grown rather largely, and with the current state of the ball python market as a whole, the demand is low for pretty much everything, and that includes sunset as well. Prices for single gene sunsets have definitely dropped, there is no refuting that. Everything is dropping. Perception doesn't equal reality, and perpetuating the notion that it will be harder to make visuals moving forward is simply not true. As you know, before this new info, people have been having massive success treating DG as a simple recessive, and that will still be true in the future. The new info will surely help people dial in their breeding plans even more, if they so choose, but it won't be necessary to have success with the gene. Look how many people are hitting on crazy odds these last few seasons alone. Personally, I hit on 8/8 visual DG from a het to visual pairing last season, and my buddy just hit all visual DG but one from the same scenario. The DG gene pool in existence is so vast, that it's same to assume most animals hold the right genetic makeup to produce ample amount of visuals, even in het to het pairings. I feel like the new info is both a blessing and curse to the gene, because like you asserted, it is bringing a degree of doubt into people's minds regarding the gene and how it works and won't work. The reality is the gene works like a simple recessive 99.9% of the time and that won't change moving forward. Hypo clowns by themselves are still selling for less than they were in their inception. It's combos that are going up in value, just like DG clown combos are still going up in value. The base form will always be the first to drop in price, this goes for any gene/combo whether it's an incomplete dominant or a double recessive. Regarding sunsets and the fandom behind it, beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder. Sunsets in the base form are very unique looking, and they do look decent as hatchlings. But when that snake reaches adulthood it's brown. Like really brown. Even the simple incomplete dominant combos, that look ok as babies, end up brown, some even more brown than the base form. Let's take the sunset clow for example, two genes that brown out considerably as adults, when combined they produce a very brown clown, especially as an adult. There is no denying this. Too each their own, but the goal is to make ball pythons that age well, and simply put, sunsets aren't that and have yet to show much promise with what's been produced thus far. The lace gene is awesome, I agree fully with that. But, comparing a single gene lace animal to a single gene DG animal, well, there is no comparison. The white lace stuff is also amazing, and I do agree that some white lace clowns(like the one Justin showed in his comparison video) do look as good or even better than a base DG clown. Like every single gene in this game, some examples are simply better quality than others, and DG clowns aren't exempt from this. Some look absolutely stunning as adults, some look anything but; quality is key, like with anything. To your point regarding the value of a white lace clown being higher than a DG clown, well the answer as to why is obvious, and it's for the reasons I stated earlier; supply and demand. Right now there aren't that many White Lace clowns in existence, but surely that will be a different story in the near future. Personally, I look forward to working the lace and DG project for years to come; they are still and will still be the best enhancing genes in the hobby. Good luck with your breeding and I do commend you for sticking to yours guns regarding the sunset gene specifically. It undoubtedly will be very interesting to see how the gene evolves in the future as more people try to unlock the key to success in making a combo that ages well, like people have with Desert Ghost.
