I’m at the final stages of a similar process and about to use a water based polyurethane varnish to seal it. I’m just a little worried how it will hold up under heat as one of the ledges I’ll be sealing will be a basking spot.

My ledges aren’t under the basking spot for that very reason... Do let us know how it holds up over time!

@@JTBReptiles my research into polyurethane says it should be ok up to temperatures of 93c I’ve done a ‘test rock’ to try it on first and see how it holds under a basking light

You’re an artist! Very nice job, ledges are very popular with my snakes.

Thanks very much, Lori! I think I could have done a better job carving them, but for a first attempt, I am quite happy with the result! You could try making something similar for your snakes, it'd be interesting to see how they took to them.

Hey J, Nice assortment of fake rocks. I am about to make my first attempt at fake rocks for my newest vivariums. I like the idea off adding the baton into the "rocks". I am going to use wooden dowels in place of screws for mine as I cannot get behind my vivariums. This should allow me to pull them off the back if and when I need to but still keep them in place in the meantime.

Nice job! Thanks for Sharing the materials used also. I’ve struggled to decide on safe sealants to use in the UK so this has helped massively 😄

How did you establish the cromapol and varnish were animal safe?
@JTBReptiles
3 жыл бұрын
The only problem you might have with them is the VOC release, but with enough ventilation and a bit of patience, those will just go away. The dragon isn’t consuming the Cromapol or varnish, so beyond the above, there’s nothing that could harm him 🙂

Great stuff. There's something very soothing and satisfying about watching people build and diy stuff.

The best part about making your own background , you cna make it look how ever you want it to look and it will always be a one off. I love making fake rocks for the background or cave .. like anything. DiY builds are harder than you think lol. Watching now mate

MUCH harder than you think! This took absolutely ages but turned out OK. If I do this again I’ll do some things slightly differently, but for a first try I can’t grumble at the result!
