Great discussion! I actually liked this book more than Red Seas. I felt the pacing was much better, and loved meeting Sabetha and getting more time with Calo, Galdo, and Father Chains.

That ending with the Falconer has me so excited for more - great discussion video! Hopefully one day we'll finally see Emberlain, I read the extract Lynch put out online and it was so good to be back.

I love the flashback. The main story I thought needed way more shenanigans

It’s been almost two years since I finished Republic of Thieves and this discussion sort of reminded me how much I adore Lynch as a writer. He does his research and his writing is just so captivating to me. It is stylistic but still accessible. At this time, it’s my favorite fantasy series (other than Berserk). Keep in mind the only other fantasy reading I’ve done is disc world, LOTR, and a bit of first law. There’s just such a great tension to these book. Also, he masterfully combines brutality, grit, and humor while maintaining a consistent tone. It has a pirates of the Caribbean vibe, which I love. Dang. I might have to reread it.

Also, I definitely get the criticism about Locke and Sabetha, but I don’t think you’re necessarily supposed to like their relationship or agree with them. These are damaged characters that do and say stupid stuff, and that’s what makes them entertaining and believe to me. Still, I definitely understand people being annoyed with them.

I've never been sadder finishing this book a week or two ago because I just miss being in this world with these characters so if anyone knows any books with these EXACT vibes I'm very open to suggestions

*Spoiler for book 1*? I loved having Calo and Galdo back! But it also it made it seem like the author regreted killing them in book one. Glad you enjoyed it!

i despise the flashbacks in this book. Locke is such a pathetic whiner in it that i keep wanting to throw the book (or my ereader) across the room when he goes in on Sabetha. (might have something to do with how my first exposure was a listen and the reader made him sound extra whiny)

Not a bad book, but my least favorite. Could have done without all the CW high-school drama in the flashbacks.

Lol I'm one of the people that hated Sabetha. Honestly they're terrible for each other and their relationship is toxic. The reason I hate her is because I love Locke and if I spent the story with Sabetha and we came acroy Locke I'd probably hate him lol

I may be alone in this opinion, but I really didn’t like book 3. I didn’t care about the current storyline and only the flashbacks were interesting to me. Maybe I need to reread, but I wish I liked it more

I agree. Got into the series cause of Merphy and loved the first two (Red Seas was the perfect pirate romp imo) but Republic of Thieves just wasn't all that. I almost wish the flashbacks were in their own novella so I could just re-read that 😅 I went in hyped after Red Seas knowing we were diving into a political scheme what a perfect setup for our duo, this is where they should shine. Locke and Jean scenes at the start of the book were phenomenal, no complaints. It's where the political hijinks start when the story goes down hill. It just all felt flat to me and Sabetha was much better as an *idea* rather than actually being in the book's mainline. Not to mention the entire ending of the book in just every aspect was rough. After a book that spent its entire runtime doing nothing it had good build up and then just went wild in the epilogue, not in a good way. Still love the series and hoping that the next book can manage to take Republic of Thieves' setup (because that's all it was, setup for the next book) and keep going strong.
