Hey guys, here's a video of Fremont's new Heil Command-SST!
Not gonna get into all of the details of when this truck got here and whatnot, but judging from the fact that it still looks brand new, yet it no longer has CA temp-plates, says something about how often it's used. Either that or they just washed this truck (highly doubt it since the RS Bay Area divisions are notorious for not cleaning their equipment).
I believe there are five total SSTs in the Fremont yard. From what I've heard, most of them haven't been assigned a regular route. What's the reasoning you may ask? Most if not all of the drivers that have operated this truck aren't too fond of it. It can all be summed up in three words; too much technology.
Now as a filmer, I can't go and say "oh it operates like total crap or is a hassle to maintain" since I'm not a driver nor a mechanic, but from what I've heard drivers say is that the truck is too complicated with all of the new automatic controls, combined with the heightened use of manual controls. There's a constant balance in between controls to extend the arm out fluently due to the arm's geometry. You can see the driver having to constantly raise or lower the arm & grabbers while extending the arm, which is if I recall another reason he said why he didn't like the truck since he did not have to do that on the other trucks he previously drove.
It also doesn't help that in a lot of places in Fremont, the asphalt dips significantly into the gutter, which I believe is why you occasionally see the driver misjudging the gripping position (granted, there is the option to manually manipulate the grabbers up and down, but that's yet again another manual control not present on the driver's previous trucks that he has to learn to use). You cannot close the grabbers or raise the arm while the arm is fully stowed either (probably to avoid body rubbing), so you're required to be a certain distance from the bin in order to actually grab and raise it.
To further compound what kind of an unnecessary purchase this truck was for the Fremont yard, there were at least three older trucks sitting in the yard waiting to be scrapped due to nonfeasible repairs. They did not choose to keep 2502 as a replacement truck for at least one of the scrap line units. It was sent out of the Fremont yard shortly after this was filmed. To my knowledge, it was never assigned to a permanent route or driver. It got moved to the Pacheco yard for a little over a year, and was reregistered and renumbered under 2418. After that it now currently resides in the Rancho Cordova yard under the same unit number.
I don't have much more to say without venturing into the territory of talking about things that I have no knowledge of or haven't observed, so I'll let you guys cast your own opinions in the comments.
Enjoy the video!
Special thanks to Ken and Keanu for being awesome drivers!
