I loved the way they lived. I wish things could be like that now. They used everything, and never wasted. They were greatful for everything they had. Nothing like people today. Well in comparison at least. It's very sad that we've come so far with technollogy yet the way we act and treat the enviromnent has gone downhill.

The samurai were more or less disbanded around the late 1800's, yet the code of the warrior, Bushido, was evident in their military training. During WWII, they carried this to great extremes, especially the kamikaze "Great Wind" pilots. And enlisted men even carried swords with them during battles.

The principels of the samurai are timeless. We can all try to live like them, with discipline, honour and courage. Bushido is also about being a good help and caring for the people in society. Protect women and children, be poltie to the elderly and so on...

The piece was wrote by Brit Clint Mansell and performed by the Kronos Quartet for the movie 'Requiem for a Dream'. Every other movie seems to be using it for trailers and what not, but that's the root of the original.

If I could live that life I would do it in a second, people complain about silly things like not having a cell phone or their computer is too slow, I wonder how they would survive without any of the things we have today. To be honest I'd be much happier. At least you know then, the way you live is honorable and right...

it is from Requiem for a dream. However, it gets used a lot for movie trailers (the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers being a very noticable one). The song does not appear anywhere in the actual Last Samurai film - it doesn't need it to be honest; the score Hans Zimmer wrote for it is beautiful enough.

Outnumbered (10 to 1: 300,000 government troops and around 30,000 Chousin and Satsuma rebels) and obviously outgunned as many of the samurai musketeers were stripped of their to guns when American rifles came in and the old 1500s Portuguese ones were discarded. That and Saigo took a wrong turn when he attempted to take control of a city (forgot which one) that had more troops in it than he thought. But if the samurai HAD won, the entire world would be shockingly different.

No, Katsumoto is the "last samurai", Cruise's character is just a catalyst to the ending. Btw, the "Katsumoto" character existed for real. If you search on google, you'll find information on how the "last samurai" really happened.

It is symbolic for how much the Japanese would lose if they turned to the West (aka America) and let their history become a thing of the past. To move into this new era the Americans were proposing, they would have to abandon their rich history. This was a sacrifice that the Emperor was ultimately unwilling to make.

I agree but remember for many years even in the american revolution they was honor . Prisoners were never treated badly unless they were hostile . The british did have a code of conduct and belief in honor so did early americans its now we have lost are ways as honorable ppl . Rome fell because one of the things they lost was honor we need to remember that as modern day warriors

thinking bout it though... there is no one to serve. and the Samurai then are incomparable... they were so perfectly conditioned for battle and morale that the meaning to be a true samurai was never used so loosely.

Well seeing as we are on par with the movie. Let us start with the end of the samurai lol. For starters Alrgen is actually based on a French veteren not an American one lol. Katsumono is based on Saigo Takamori who was an official samurai who supported the Meiji-anti Tokugawa restoration (20 years before he ironically rebeled against the Meiji) I also find Saigo's history of constant arrests while he was still in service to be the comical side of the story. :p

I realize this, but America was the main focus as the catalyst of change in the film. I do know that the Westernization of Japan was not endorsed solely by the US, as in the film they list various other countries aiding the westernization process in different ways when Cruise's character is speaking with the professor right after he arrives in Japan. In case I wasn't clear about that, I was speaking purely about the content of the film, which focuses a lot on the actions of the US, that's all.

As for insulting our nation's treatment of "prisoners", you forget that even the Geneva Conventions provides for summary execuation for stateless, non-uniformed "combatants" engaged in hostilities. Those same conventions place the guilt for the deaths of any "human shields" on those same "combatants". If any enemy prisoner wants to be treated with respect, he must first be an uniformed soldier serving in his nation's military, not some murderer in a woman's burka hiding behind innocent people.

Mankind has gone to such great lengths to try and control the things around it, but it seems we are unable to understand or control our inner domain. We are the embodiment of greed. As far as I'm concerned, we have no right to boast an improved quality of life. There's nothing impressive about being taking more than you need while others starve. I can't even type this without feeling guilty for owning such an unnecessary thing as a computer when there are people who can't even have water.

At its height of power, Rome treated its prisoners will complete disdain. Crucifiction was adopted BECAUSE it was such an awful, humiliating way to die. Rome fell because Roman citizens no longer viewed military service as an honor but something to be avoided. Foreign merceneries were recruited not just to guard far-flung provinces, but Rome itself. Emperor Theodosius was a complete moron to trust Alaric and his Visigoths with the defense of Rome. In 408, Alaric sacked Rome.
