Great work. Curious how you did the snow flakes, did you just animate studs held up by lego pieces then mask them out?

Each stud is stuck to a pane of glass in front of the set and moved along each frame.

This was amazing! All those effects! The sigfig cameos! Also, that shot of the white astronaut landing was probably the single best piece of animation I've seen in any of your films. And that's a really, really high standard. Did you use go-motion? Or was that motion blur digital? Anyhow... The microscale shots of Earth, the moon, and the spaceship were great. Are the white bricks in 0:41 sitting atop a glass pane that's between the ship and the camera? That's genius! At 0:43, the crashing effect was great! Before the ship hits the ground, one of it wingtips is offscreen. That's a great way to hide a rig or a hand without having to do masking! How'd you do the sky? Holes punched in black poster board with a light behind it? Or just white dots painted on? And... That snow effect, man... 10/10

Thank you for such kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed! Motion blur was accomplished by physically moving the subject a little as the picture was being captured-- the shutter speed was slow enough that it blurred the image. And you guessed right with the starry sky, it's a large sheet with holes in it for a light to shine through.

I love everything about this. The snow moving as the man walks, the moon being a golf ball, the lighting in space, the speed effects as the ship crashes, and all our sig figs at the end. Also the description. And then there's the snow effect, which adds so much to the tone. The only shot that felt a bit off was the microscale space ship, which I think maybe just wobbles a bit too much for my taste. All in all, one of the best videos to come out of this project. One last thing though - Is there metaphorical significance to Rio being short?
@Pongowl
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Undershadow, I appreciate your thoughts! First thing though, the moon is actually a LEGO part, from the first Y-wing set (item # 30208 on Bricklink). As for your question though, I really just wanted an excuse to try animating the new short legs! :P It was also important for the plot that Aunt Lainr and Uncle Tost be taller than rio, but rio is still tall in his own right. Great flick man! I'm still coming back a month later. Question though: why is the moon a tube?
@Pongowl
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! If you know anything about the real moon, only one side actually faces the earth at all times. This is because the moon is a cylinder with concave parabolic ends. In past times the moon could be seen in it's full cylindrical glory, but it is currently tide locked and only one end of the cylinder can be seen from earth. Being a steadfast man of science, I dedicated many minutes of my time toward replicating this unique shape in LEGO for the film.

I sincerely hope you're joking, but I've been laughing at too many flat earth videos recently. I mean how did you do it? That tape stuff?
@Pongowl
5 жыл бұрын
The earth is obviously not flat, that's just ridiculous. I mean have you been to the Rockies?? you mean those rubber knockoff tapes? no no no, it's all official LEGO, I just used the existing large grey baseplate and warped it to have a curve.
@squidtasticvideos

Of course it's not flat you just scared me there for a sec and I didn't want to be rude if you really thought that. WAIT YOU WARPED LEGO???? Why????
