Great video, really nice practical tips. Agree with almost everything , although would say Alchemist Tower is often not the best choice to prioritize round one, especially when you have good cards for an engine. Another finer point is that taking reanimate to block dragon’s lair or catacombs you should take into account if that hurts you, especially if the opponent is going to eventually get it the same number of times

Agreed. I was talking to my friend who recently hit rank #3 in Res Arcana. He said I am much too high on Alchemist Tower and not nearly high enough on Sunken Reef. I was pretty surprised, but when he showed the math it made sense. Re: denying reanimate, it does depend on a lot of factors, being able to use it is one of them. Ideally you can delay your turn long enough for them to pass first while you have it so you essentially deny it for 2 rounds in a row as opposed to 1. It's not correct at all times but certainly something to keep in mind!

@@NoWondersTV Excellent points, Sunken Reef is often undervalued. Only place of power that takes only 3 resources to get a point and doesn't tap. Good point about reanimate. What I was thinking is that what I often see with weaker players is that they pass too early or bypass a good magic item for themselves just to block re-animate. Definitely want to try to block it though if all else is equal, or whenever there is a net benefit.

What do you mean you can get over 80 red thanks to Infernal Engine? Infernal Engine lets you TAP the card and basically secure the essences from other players (you put them on infernal engine) Second ability is you take any number essences from some card. There is no possibility to exploit dragon teeth with engine in repeat, since you tap the engine once (twice if u have revive)
@Guudys

Let's say you have 4 red essences. You do the action of spending 2 red essences to get 3 on Dragon Teeth twice. There is now 6 red essences on DT. You tap Infernal Engine to take all the red essences from DT. Now you have 6 red essences in hand. You do the same action 3 times meaning there is now 9 red essences on DT. That's an example with barely any red but if you go into the next round, now you'll have 10 reds (IE produces one) so you do the DT action 5 times and there's 15 red essences on it. You use IE to take all 15 essences then add red back on DT 7 times so there's now 21 red essences on DT. Now imagine you also have a Reanimate power (be it the Magic Item or Chalice of Fire or the Witch), you can untap IE and take all these 21 essences from DT and repeat the process. It's a very snowbally engine. Actually on BGA, the highest score ever is like 135 in 4 rounds because of these two cards.

@@Guudys Oh I see now, thanks for the explanation. But even tho you can snowball so many red, it takes a bit of a time and since the Res Arcana is about to win the fastest, it might be a problem sometimes.

You are obviously an experienced player. How would you estimate the skill to luck ratio? What percentage of the time would you say the best player wins?
@NoWondersTV

The top players on Board Game Arena have roughly 80-85% win rates, so I would say around that. Their ratings also hit 650-800 which puts it ahead of a game like Wingspan but behind something like Azul. Luck plays a part and you can lose to anyone that gets the Catacombs, but a better player will find a way to win more often than not.

Can you use Illusion after everyone has passed (for #23)? I was under the impression that that would not be allowed.
@NoWondersTV
2 жыл бұрын
For Illusion, you can only tap it if you react to your own actions such as Victory checks (for Gate of Hell or Sorcerer's Bestiary points where it says points per dragons or points per demons) or other of YOUR own cards with React powers. The Dark Cathedral is one of these other React powers. Its power works just like the Golden Statue where you can perform an action after everyone has passed (even yourself). Its ability is basically a React power that you activate when a victory check happens. Illusion and the Illusionnist can only be tapped as YOU react to something YOU did so in this case, YOU react to the victory check on the card so you can tap the monument and also tap Illusion (as you reacted to one of your own React powers) and count it as a Demon. I'm not sure how clear I am in my explanations, it doesn't sound very straightforward said like that. It is also why Illusion for the Bestiary wouldn't work as a dragon if another player would have victory checked (Crystal Keep/Coral Castle) because you are reacting to a victory check but YOU didn't activate that victory check. Illusion only reacts to something you did and Dark Cathedral is a card that reacts so you react with it first, so then you can tap the Illusion as you are reacting. In this case, the Illusion is just like any untapped demon card in your build. If you had the Homonculus untapped, you passed and then tapped Homonculus for the Victory Check of Dark Cathedral, you would get +1. It is the same with Illusion. This is why it is one of the best monuments in the game so if someone is going through the monument deck, you do not want them to pass and get Illusion and a +1. Always take Illusion as you pass on the very last turn. If you have Dark Cathedral, more power to you. If you don't but your opponent has it or is going to get it, then you just deny them 1 extra point.

I forgot to say, it is also coded as I said on BGA too so it definitely works and you can tap Illusion after everyone has passed as you react to the victory check. :)

Illusion being used in the victory check that happens every round is a weird one to wrap my head around. In the rulebook of the game, magic items don't flip back over from their passed side until a victory check has failed and another round is to begin. So on BGA it's not like this?

Not interested in the 2nd expansion?

Hello Mike, this is Gwladys. We have played the 2nd expansion a couple of times on Tabletop Simulator but it isn't available where we are to play IRL at the moment, unless we pay crazy shipping fees for it to get shipped from the US or Europe (I remember, last time I checked, shipping was 300 bucks from France). We are however more knowledgeable about the base game and the 1st expansion as it is one (or used to be) of our most played games. Moreover, the 2nd expansion isn't currently available on BGA. If I had to add a few tips with the 2nd expansion, they would be the following (keep in mind we haven't had the pleasure to play it extensively so my opinions might be wrong or evolve with time and more plays). * For Sam's 1st tip about items, I think Windup Man finally becomes a good card as he will produce 2 VPs every round and these points will stay safe as they count even if placed on the card (as opposed to any other resource). It is still an expensive card (spending nearly everything you have in the first round) so you need also other production cards to get your engine going because at most, you'll get what? 6 pearls from Windup Man on the collect phase of round 4 so you'll need other ways to reach the new goal of 13 points (not 10). I do not believe WM becomes a broken card (as many seem to think) but it finally is a strong card. You'll still need other means to get points from somewhere else. * This also makes Pearl Bed really strong. It produces 1 pearl every round, can produce more pearls (by tapping the PoP and spending 4 Calm) and is worth 2 points per pearls on the PoP. What this means is that it is not 2 VPs but 3 VPs as the pearls count also as 1 VP each even if on the card. * The Phoenix is a really good card to produce a gold every round as well as being a creature (Bestiary or Menagerie PoP). I wouldn't use it for the React power, personally. * Lodestone is an interesting card. I haven't drafted it yet but I've seen it being played quite efficiently. It produces 1 Calm every round and only costs 3 resources (1 Gold, 1 Calm). By tapping it and spending 4 Calm, you get a pearl and to draw a card in exchange. The second ability (the Seer) is also useful but I suppose getting a pearl and 2 resources (the value of a card) is most of the time better. * As said in the video above, Dragons are rarely a way to win. I think Ancient Dragon is way too expensive for the 2 points he is giving. He is basically the cost of a PoP for 2 points and cannot be used with Dragon Teeth or Sacrificial Dagger. Even with a discount, he stays expensive. The biggest discount you can get is by already owning Dragon's Lair and destroying Dragon Egg for a discount of 7 resources (meaning the dragon is now 5 but that will have cost you a gold which is inefficient as gold is worth 2 resources). Without the Dragon Egg, that would be with Dragon's Lair and tapping the Dragon Tamer for a discount of 5 resources. It also means that if you have the Dragon's Lair, the Bestiary isn't in the game and it is the only PoP where you score with the more Dragons you have. Bestiary doesn't offer any discount on building Dragons so Ancient Dragon stays incredibly expensive and Sea Serpent is always the better option for Bestiary giving you a net total of 4 points like the AD but by spending less resources. (edit : I forgot about the new artefact called Scrimshaw Awl that costs 2 gold and 1 elan. It gives a discount of 6 essences if tapped but it is at the cost of a pearl so you're basically spending a victory point to build the AD which makes it not so worth it.) * The Dolphin is very expensive (2 Gold, 2 Life, 2 Calm) but is really strong. It basically produces a victory point every production phase. Added to that, his 2 abilities are really good. It is never bad to get more resources, and it is always handy to have some protection. Keep in mind that this protection is a React action just like the Tree of Life so it can be spent even if the Dolphin is tapped. * Endless Knot is a bit similar to the Vault so it is interesting seeing it is basically free. I've played only once with it in my very first game and didn't realise the pearls counted even if on the card so I actually took it on the last turn instead of producing 2 resources. I believe it would be useful in most builds as it's an income of 2 resources, but it is particularly good for builds like the Crystal Keep as it does 2 things : produces essences, and counts as an artefact (that literally cost you nothing to build). * For the mages, Seafarer seems really strong as 2 Calm for a pearl is never a bad thing. I am thrilled about seeing the Illusionist and I hope I can get to play with her eventually (haven't had the chance yet, only played with Infuser and Dragon Tamer). She seems to offer flexibility with the wild resource production and the Illusion ability. Infuser and Dragon Tamer are a bit whatever in my opinion. If you have any tips about the 2nd expansion, I'd love to hear them! I haven't played it nearly enough to get the whole gist of it but these were my first impressions after a couple of games with the 2 expansions merged in together.
