@101Volts

+betsiecow As far as leaving the car on (not talking about the rest here,) Back in the 1950s people commonly would let cars idle; maybe for multiple reasons which I don't know. One reason could be that they were using straight weight oils and they thought it would increase the longevity of the engine to leave it on. Note for readers: cars used to not have an automatic transmission safety interlock where the user must hold the brake down to shift from park. I've driven cars made as late as 2000 (model year) which don't have this feature.
@Tuneman1984
8 жыл бұрын
+Austin Lucas Agreed. And it was likely because of the number of accidents with children putting the car into gear that drove automakers to begin installing brake-shift interlocks. The youngest brother of my childhood best friend did it once when he was about 2 or 3 and thankfully no-one was hurt. He climbed into the family's Chevy Astro when no-one was looking and slipped it into neutral, van rolled backwards out of the driveway at low speed and bumped off the opposing curb. It was a quiet street so there was no traffic. I only heard about it after the fact as I was away on holidays the week it happened.
