Luna seems to be the biggest Resident alongside Bomber and other Tawny Owls while Kestrels are smallest and have overall most difficult life. Though nothing can compare to life of Barn Owl youth, Barn Owls definitely try to be best parents but they simply follow the survival of the fittest rule maybe too much.

Life expectancy of Kestrels is not great. 2 - 3 years is about average, but they have been known to live for more than 20 years, but that is rare. 10 - 12 years is not uncommon. 70% of Kestrels die within the first year. Breeding pairs may only raise one or two families before they die. Biggest cause of deaths is Traffic collisions whilst hunting roadside verges, or predation by Peregrine Falcons and Sparrow Hawks; both of which will take anything that flies, including Owls. The life of a Kestrel is fraught with danger, due to their light build.

What a bittersweet story. This year, an eagles nest ive watched for years lost its matriarch Harriet. She was estimated to be close to 40 yrs old snd weve had a camera on her and her mate M15 for years so weve seen many of her clutches fledge and some eaglets not survive due to poison and other problems. Harriet was first recorded with a clutch in the area in 1992 w her previous mate Ozzy. She had just hatched her most recent clutch. E21 and E22 when she didn't come back. It was heartbreaking losing her this season. But her mate M15 successfully daw both eaglets to fledge despite the loss of his mate AND outside interference from other females. It was absolutely amazing. So happy both these dads managed to step up this season. And thankful to you for helping jeff succeed.

This video brought tears to my eyes, as I was following the story of this orphaned kestrel, from his very early days. I almost had lost my hope on him, as he was super weak. It's unfortunate that dear old Mr. and Mrs. Kes are gone, but I'm overjoyed that Jeff is staying to continue his parents' legacy here at Fotherdale. When it comes to wildlife monitoring and management, we must appreciate each moment for what it is, and celebrate the new life even as we mourn the losses; life goes on, and on. Perhaps one day when Jeff is gone, we'll be cheering on his own chicks in their adventures. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for these two.
