For the search of ship wreck the submarine "Euronaut" is equipped with two sonars. The one is a 2D-Imaging forward -looking multibeam sonar. The other one is a side-scan and down-vision sonar combined with a sea chart plot and GPS receiver. The handling of both gadget has been trained on these trips in april 2018. It was also the first time the submarine conducted mid-water maneuvers in a constant distance over ground, where side-scan sonar works best. But this kind of manually steered operation also needs some exercise.
"Euronaut" is a private project of a research and diver support submarine built by Carsten Standfuss - a German naval architect. It has been designed between 1988 and 2000. Then it took another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work. Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt.
The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft).
Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.
The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.
